What are they thinking?!!! They can lobby the government all they like, the law is the law.

Are the unions going to end up destroying themselves over this foolishness? The lawyers must be rubbing their hands in glee!!

Well I'm glad I'm not a teacher!

SternJoyousBee · 11/05/2025 23:37

Unions are not the friends of women. I hate to say it (as a lifelong Labour voter) but I think men on the left are the biggest misogynists.

Bannedontherun · 11/05/2025 23:38

Not on point but if I were a staffer for some senior MP i would be getting a bit bored with all these letters.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 11/05/2025 23:39

There's just such a massive disconnect between the people that go for these positions and the general public!!

I'd really love to see polling on what the members actually think.

Debbie Hayton is part of the NEU isn’t he. Reckon he’s behind this.

Bannedontherun · 11/05/2025 23:43

@mordaunt no he is not, he has come around to realising he was wrong,.

DuesToTheDirt · 11/05/2025 23:44

Oh, another union that thinks women don't matter. What a surprise.

I thought the Supreme Court judgement would be the end of all this nonsense, but I foresee yet more court cases coming....

Blackdow · 11/05/2025 23:45

Saying “the law is the law” is a little naive. That’s what lobbying is for; laws are changed and rewritten. I’d be more worried about it than “haha, the law is the law.”

Indeed.

Changing the law will take many years though, so for now the law is the law. That's not naive that's reality.

Actually, I shouldn't be surprised. I was a union rep once, despite not having much talent for it. I did it because no-one else would, so I suppose if other unions are like that one, then if you have an agenda to push then you can put yourself forward for union positions and it's easy to get elected.

DuesToTheDirt · 11/05/2025 23:51

And now that I read the article, I see that the calibre of the NEU reps must be very low indeed.

"The NEU motion ‘condemned’ the guidance and called for it to be withdrawn, saying it is ‘incoherent and unclear’."

If anyone can't understand the EHRC guidance they are half a brick short of a full load.

And still a man will be a man - you can legislate whatever you want - but laws can’t change reality or biology!

and even if there is lots of lobbying the law right now says that men can not use women’s spaces - hypothesising about what could happen in the future is irrelevant - it is illegal now

teawamutu · 12/05/2025 08:20

I asked my union rep last week (not the NEU but about equally demented) whether there is any point my remaining a member if my union was not only putting forward motions to actively undermine the rights of half its members, but doing so in such a hostile environment that no-one actually dared speak up and offer an alternate view.

Haven't heard back.

Shortshriftandlethal · 12/05/2025 08:23

NPET · 11/05/2025 23:36

Well I'm glad I'm not a teacher!

The NEU have been taken over by radical activists, just like the BMU. Always agitating. The pupils are irrelevent to them.

NPET · 11/05/2025 23:36

Well I'm glad I'm not a teacher!

I'm glad I'm not a child. Teachers are allowed into the children's changing rooms. Horrifying that a man could decide he wants to supervise a room of undressed children and the union would support that.

The supreme court ruling made clear the law as it has been since the equalities act was written. There is no appetite for even the Labour party to over-turn the equalities act as it relates to 'Sex'. The Greens are mental enough to suggest it - but they have no credibility.

Supreme Court rulings can only be challenged in exceptional circumstances, and even then it is the Supreme Court itself that must revise its own position. This ruling, however, was unequivocal and unanimous and has already been accepted by the government.

The NEU are having a tantrum. They have been taken over, like many unions, by radical activists who care not one bit about their pupils. Most teachers do not want to strike or get involved in political agitation.

All schools must provide single sex toilets and changing rooms for children over the age of 8. And all workplaces must do the same for employees.

Myalternate · 12/05/2025 08:30

What is the point of being in a Union that doesn’t represent you, support you or advocate for you?

Myalternate · 12/05/2025 08:30

There is a new organisation that does represent teachers in the ways that most look to a union for, and doesn't get involved in political disputes and agitation.
it is called Edapt

Vivienne1000 · 12/05/2025 08:34

And of course the head of the NEU is a male.
So now will they waste our fees fighting this law?

They have clearly not read the ruling . Trans activism relies on confusion and incoherence just to survive. It withers very quickly when exposed to bright sunlight.

yep next to men in bands/artyfarty types (who claim to be left wing but usually are very much good old Tory/ business types). I'm the same as you, life long Labour voter (took some doing in 2019 though- hated every Party then, almost same 2024) and male union types can be utter shits. Happy to have you making the tea and think they are God's gift. All those cosy voting for their pals to go away to Conference etc
Only reason I am still in a union is because I need to do to nature of my work. I so wish we had a Women's Union. A real Women's trade union.

Shortshriftandlethal · 12/05/2025 08:57

It is not up to the NEU anyway. School or Academy management and boards are the ones who implement legal rulings.

lanadelgrey · 12/05/2025 08:59

Will their membership strike for this? No.

@mordaunt no he is not, he has come around to realising he was wrong,.

The thing about Debbie is he was smart enough early on to see the wind was changing and has been ahead of the change.

He still wrote terrible school guidelines that meant there was no single sex changing for students.
