What are they thinking?!!! They can lobby the government all they like, the law is the law.

Are the unions going to end up destroying themselves over this foolishness? The lawyers must be rubbing their hands in glee!!

@frenchnoodle i agree with what you say but that does not entitle people to throw around accusations

TheOtherRaven · 12/05/2025 09:05

How are they planning to enable this for men while retaining the legal protections for women and girls?

Are they planning to just ignore those legal protections?

Are they seeking to overturn women and girls' legal protections in law to increase the freedoms and enforce superior rights of men?

And interesting they are just now plain all about the men, not even an attempt left about this being trans people as a mixed sex group.

The government need to slap this down hard and soon, or they have basically demonstrated that the law has no enforcement and is optional, (the question then has to be asked about which laws are enforced and why because it's no longer a blanket thing so legitimacy has gone), and that they are too weak to be any kind of governance.

I'm glad I'm not a child. Teachers are allowed into the children's changing rooms. Horrifying that a man could decide he wants to supervise a room of undressed children and the union would support that.

If that's the case, I'm appalled. At school we had Strictly Segregated Spaces (as we called them) into which p"n"ses were not allowed.
(Being teenage girls we specified what we'd do if one was seen entering our SSS!)

Unions are not the friends of women. I hate to say it (as a lifelong Labour voter) but I think men on the left are the biggest misogynists.

Sadly, yes. I was just saying to someone in the gym this morning that I'd rather talk to an upfront right wing conservative, than a left wing bro who hides his contempt for women behind his "progressive" views.

Does the NEU realise they are breaking the law?????

Helen Joyce spoke with her characteristic clarity on this:

And of course the head of the NEU is a male.
So now will they waste our fees fighting this law?

They cannot fight it. It is not in their remit.

It is not up to the NEU anyway. School or Academy management and boards are the ones who implement legal rulings.

This. As a school governor, the advice of the NEU has little bearing on school policies. I worry that some teachers could end up in serious trouble if they unquestioningly follow the advice of a union that's telling them to ignore the SC and the EHRC. Unions have a duty to advise members on what the law is, not what they'd like it to be.

Treaclewell · 12/05/2025 14:35

The membership is far from half female. It is mostly female, though Conference seems much more male - or did in my day. It is interesting that the other union, the NASUWT started as a split from the NUT because the NUT supported women, equal pay for example. It only joined with the UWT because the law would not allow them to, as they did, exclude women. But it now seems to be sensible about this issue

mumisfull · 12/05/2025 15:15

Can any teachers recommend a union that does protect women’s rights? I’m in NEU currently but this has given me a push to move. Someone mentioned Edapt above which might suit me. Are any other unions worth considering?

DragonRunor · 12/05/2025 15:50

At this stage, I’m not sure what support women are ever going to get from the (traditional) unions they pay for. Time to vote with our cash and join unions that actually seem to have all their members’ best interests as their primary focus.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/05/2025 15:51

This kind of nonsense is why I quit the NEU.

I'm not aware of NASUWT being captured. That's who I'm with now.

WorriedMutha · 12/05/2025 15:55

Those teachers among you who are in the NEU, are you aware of any pushback today against this edict?
When the BMA pulled a similar stunt against Cass last year, they soon got a schooling from their membership and had to start obfuscating.
Any hope for the NEU?
