Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So I should seriously consider the opinions of someone who pretends to be somebody else for a living?

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 10/05/2025 22:42

Rummly · 10/05/2025 22:14

This is the thing I find most bewildering.

Pop stars, actors, TV presenters, who cares what they think? They could be great or terrible at what they do, they could be lovely or mean spirited, they could be right or left politically or obsessed with one particular cause…none of this, nothing, makes them worth listening to.

They’re just fucking performers!

Where did Tennant get his special insight? On the planet GRC 96 in the Trans constellation, while helping self-ID Cyberwomen fight the dreaded Terfs, allies of the Daleks?

The ones I particularly resent are fabulously wealthy Hollywood types lecturing the world. Do you live in Beverly Hills and have a private jet? Quick, tell me about not using planes, or about poverty. 🙄

I particularly liked George Clooney smugly declaring to us lesser mortals that him and his wife never argue. Of course you don’t fucking argue, you have nothing to argue about you moron! All the things ordinary couples argue about simply don’t apply to people like him, he has ‘people’ who manage all the day to day shit that cause most arguments, no washing, cleaning, cooking, putting the bins out, renewing the car insurance etc etc etc. Their inability to understand how ordinary people live absolutely astounds me.

Is it similar to how people (me included) delight in others speaking up for women, or at least highlighting the absurdities of the current situation? Eg when Ricky gervais joked about the “new women” or when John Cleese said something about whether it was allowed for him to be a Cambodian police woman.

They’re only performers but it’s still a relief when it seems like other people get it. I imagine people who think TWAW etc probably feel a similar relief that others share their perspective and for that reason, people speak about it.

I still don’t agree with what he’s saying mind, I just think it’s understandable why he does even if it reveals his utter disregard for women

kittenkipping · 10/05/2025 22:52

I think he is an outstanding actor having followed his career and seen him in Macbeth live. But I can appreciate that he has talent in acting whilst being an absolute pleb elsewhere. That he’s a sanctimonious and uniformed misogynist does not make him a bad actor.

i think part of the beauty of being on the “terf” side , is that we are allowed to agree to disagree. Tenants “side” is so very absolute. There’s no room for grey. Which weakens their already thin arguments- as evidenced by their utter insistence that jk Rowling is a bad author- they have to employ a wilful ignorance of her multiple successes/ best sellers/ gold plated adaptations of her works and pretend that she’s actually talentless and no one likes her- for them to disagree with her opinions on women’s rights.

JazzyJelly · 10/05/2025 22:58

@EweSurnamei think Gervais' partner is likely a very switched on woman. He referenced several things in his stand up that men would likely not pick up on. Even those who love 'the beauty of reality' Dawkins side of things.

mrstrickland · 10/05/2025 18:43

Why is Mumsnet so weird? David Tennant is an utterly brilliant actor and a thoroughly nice human being. Just because his views don't align with your own does not make him a bad person.

He is not a thoroughly nice human being. He is a misogynist.

SionnachRuadh · 10/05/2025 23:07

I suppose actors have as much right to speak up on an issue as everyone else, and we have the right to not take them seriously.

I mostly blame Twitter for this. Not too long ago most actors had their public appearances carefully curated, and they'd mostly just do interviews to promote their latest fillum. A minority were politically active - say Warren Beatty or Susan Sarandon on the left, or Charlton Heston or Clint Eastwood on the right, or Richard Gere with his Tibet activism - but they were usually serious and well informed about their subjects.

I also blame Bill Clinton, because on general principle he's responsible for lots of what's wrong with the world, but his lash up with Harvey Weinstein to make Hollywood an arm of the Democratic Party has had the effect of turning people like George Clooney into fairly serious power brokers.

So now we have actors who are on social media all fucking day and telling us their opinions on every subject that catches their eye, and confirming that most of them are idiots who only have jobs because they're good looking and have a talent for pretending.

Actors who acquire trans children like they acquire purse puppies are just another part of that idiocy.

SinnerBoy · 10/05/2025 23:16

Like others here, I'm slack jawed in shock at his enormous hypocrisy in that article! Whining that he's silenced on the matter, whilst wanging on endlessly in national newspapers and televised interviews, whilst actively trying to silence the likes of Kemi Badenoch.

Jeez!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 10/05/2025 23:33

He was rubbish as Hamlet.

RedToothBrush · 10/05/2025 23:42

He is an annoying, misogynistic little man.

Whose new ITV show is one of the biggest flops the channel has had in years ...

Is it? Oh, good 😊

maltravers · 10/05/2025 23:59

I saw him in Macbeth, it was quite good, but nothing to write home about. He was still very much a version of DT in that. I think many actors are not particularly well read and have not had to exercise their critical reasoning skills much in their job. Their every comment is hung on and applauded and their fans love them pretty much whatever they say, so it’s probably unsurprising that they think a bit too much of themselves.

The comment about him being terrorised not to hold opinions was just embarrassing imo. He’s been lauded for them until wishing KB didn’t exist. Silly prat.

JazzyJelly · 11/05/2025 02:43

I saw him in MacBeth too. And Ian McKellen as Hamlet, and what's his name who was Voldemort. I'm SO bored of aCtOrS wanking themselves off for the camera while we're expected to pay for it.

Best Shakespeare adaptation I've seen in years was a Merry Wives of Windsor with nobody I knew. Hilarious. 'Oh look! A wheelie bin!' 😂

SqueakyDinosaur · 10/05/2025 19:11

Noooooo! Tom Baker was the best Doctor Who! Tennant is second.

Tom Baker best, but Matt Smith second, he nailed the old/young dichotomy of the character imo. But he has also turned into a knob, sadly

Kinsters · 11/05/2025 04:04

I saw David Tennant in Hamlet and Richard II and enjoyed both performances a lot. Also loved him in Dr Who.

Interesting that he says "most people don't give a shit", "not reflective of what most people feel" and "disproportionate". That seems to be a common pushback to the SC ruling and the various sporting body rulings. That it's not what people want. I wonder the EHCR consultation results will be summarised and published.

beguilingeyes · 11/05/2025 04:20

I always loathed his shouty 'look at me' Doctor so I'm feeling a bit vindicated now.
Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi FTW, although slightly hampered by horribly smug Clara. I wish we could've had more Bill.

BatchCookBabe · 10/05/2025 17:44

I can't believe how much I used to like him, compared to how much I dislike him now! What an arse. He's still the best Doctor Who though!

No, that was Tom Baker who also did the linking comments on Little Britain so politically correct he ain't.

TheignT · 11/05/2025 06:55

Can't like Gervais after the "mong" jokes.

TakingMyChancesWithTheRabbits · 11/05/2025 07:17

TheignT · 10/05/2025 21:32

I liked him in Takin' Over The Asylum, Ken Stott was also good in it but then I think he's good in everything. Katy Murphy was also brilliant in it.

I think I might want to see it again.

Edited

All the episodes are up on youtube, although due to copyright issues the ones ripped from DVD have covers of the Beatles tracks. If you'd rather hear the original music and don't mind watching in ten minute chunks, search for a user called midcirclenine, who's uploaded a playlist of the entire series recorded off the telly.

ETA although annoyingly one of the bits of episode 2 is missing.

I got into Dr Who because of him. He was great. Now he looks like Quentin Blake's illustrations of Mr Wormwood in Matilda and is just as disappointing.

Why do people pay attention to what actors say about politics and other social issues? They have no more insight into these complex matters than anybody else.

This baffles me too. '1,000 slebs sign letter demanding that...' So bloody what? They're not experts in the field, a lot of them are only doing it for the cool points, why should anyone care?

EweSurname · 11/05/2025 07:51

It’s solidarity isn’t it? If a 1000 celebrities signed a letter that they respected the Supreme Court ruling and they felt women had been let down by the misapplication of the law over the last 15 years and should have their legal rights upheld, I’d be delighted

MrsOvertonsWindow · 11/05/2025 07:52

It's quite entertaining watching this lot discover they're on the wrong side of history in promoting child sterilisation and the removal of women's rights. They're not going away quietly 😂
