Ooh, now that's a recipe I need! Would you mind sharing?

It's this one, the sour cream does give it a nice tang and extra moisture: https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/recipe/plum-vanilla-soured-cream-cake

For those wanting a lawn boy, I think you have to order them from amazon dot com as opposed to amazon dot co dot uk, since they're not a thing over here.

P&P and customs charges will be a killer, though.

(And yes, 'boy' is an old term in English for a servant of any age, like garçon in French, but is very colonialist in British English, as in 'houseboy'. Much more used in US English - cowboy (obviously), bellboy, pool boy, lawn boy - not sure what that says about the USians).

Boy has racist connotations in America as confirmed by a Supreme Court ruling in 2006:

Context Counts: The Word "Boy" May Be a Racial Epithet At Work | Littler

In a brief unanimous opinion, the United States Supreme Court ruled on February 21, 2006 in Ash v. Tyson Foods, Inc. that the word "boy" without any words modifying it, can be a racial epithet depending on the context, inflection, tone of voice, local...

Oh, and as for the reference above to a Reddit user called MimTheWitch, I can only assume it’s the same person as thought TERFs were hypocritical for using a barrister who’d gone from being a QC to a KC. Bless them, I think they thought the divine Mr Cooper had changed sex and no one had noticed…

(And absolutely nothing to do with it being a reference to the sex of the reigning monarch which changed in September 2022)

It's interesting because I'm trying to understand the history and it sort of fits with the depression over on reddit - tell me if I have anything wrong/vital missed etc:

The original trans campaigners Burns and Whittle (& others?) were just the sort of organised, middle class types minus the lawn boys and far right connections obvs who did the grassroots campaigning which led to adding the T to the LGB. They were organised and gained a lot of traction in westminster, and then funding and Stonewall's pivot... Those original campaigners pretty much got what they wanted with the GRA.... Burns claimed in an article that they stopped campaigning around 2012 - a coincidence that UK same sex marriage started in 2013? After which Stonewall seems to have worked out to monetise inclusion on a huge scale to prevent its own extinction. Then with the promotion of self ID maximised its potential market ... and into that environment young people emerged and thought this movement/direction of travel was inevitable/normal/right-side-of-history etc rather than a massive pyramid scheme ... So over on reddit I suppose it is a bit dark, because they thought it was an unstoppable new wave. Must be confusing as the tide has turned sorry about the watery metaphors

Here's a selection in response to "I'm busy baking 50 sausage rolls for my Terf cell members who are dropping by later." :

WHAT!!! Only one sausage roll per person. Cheapskate. And with all that far right money too!

Don't forget to write the coded message in the underside of the pastry Jeannie.

Yo, Shelly. Don't forget the tequila for my cell. It was mezcal last meeting and no one was impressed. Do better.

"Ex-GC" 😆 That's not the way it works. There's no unpeaking.

Can I have your sausage roll recipe? I’m arranging a get-together with my sister terf cell members for Friday and was looking for catering ideas. I’ll WhatsApp you.

Shall I bring a pillow, I believe pillow fights are one of those things we women like to do when we get together?

I'll be there - identifying as one of your cell members, even though we've never met - answering the call to freshly Terf-baked sausage rolls.

I’m doing cupcakes for mine.

Oh, can I come? I have been looking for a cell but they are so well hidden, do you have tea? I can bring some balaclavas if you're short, maybe even some camouflage netting (my son has some left from army cadets, he won't mind) I will look in my garage for it and bring it anyway

I'm assembling 10 more patio chairs I got at Lidl last week, because I just don't have enough seating to accommodate my terf cell.

Brilliant. 😂

Poor Mim... I can only hope that my posting that they have made (at the time of posting) 32 Mumsnetters laugh enough to post a 😆 reaction to their quote on p1 of this thread, will make up for their misunderstanding over the use of QC/KC.

Mim, you have brought a lot of laughter to the forum. Well done!

Definitely.....it stems from slavery in the confederate states. Likewise in South Africa during apartheid......many white people would have a black 'garden boy'...even if he was an adult with a family.

VaddaABeetch · 06/05/2025 15:27

EdithStourton · 06/05/2025 14:15

That would explain it.

I could host this ere garden party, I have a lawn. The only thing is, I'd need at least three lawn boys for a week to give the place a good tidy up...

And another lawn boy to keep your husband busy, don't forget!

I told my husband about the lawn boys comment, and he was very excited at the though of having someone to help him in the garden until I explained "helping in the garden" was a euphemism.

Thanks for clarifying, I had only read that single post.

Sorry Mim (if you are reading), I had not realised that it was a joke.

I think its pretty offensive
I was with a group of American Sailors and everything suddenly turned very sour when one white Southern chap called a black colleague "boy".
We Brits were a bit baffled until someone explained how offensive it is

Brilliant recognition of Magdalen Burns and the women from MN who set up For Women Scotland.

I found this Mr Menno tribute in the comments.

It's fascinating how many of them start 'there's been very little research into TERFs but' and then make up something preposterous - including the notion that GC people get paid to be GC? Wouldn't it be loverly.

They don't have a clue that for most of us there is no 'movement' . Just ever deepening scepticism, and sadness for the victims (I suspect many of those on Reddit are gullible young women who've been sold a destructive lie).

TwoLoonsAndASprout · 06/05/2025 13:41

This is spot on. I think I said something in another thread about a girl on Twix talking about how all the women she saw on TV growing up were super strong - Buffy, Xena - and previous to that we had Charlie’s Angels and Wonder Woman. And they could overpower men. So ordinary women should of course be at least equal, physically, to men. And so then we get random girls on the street saying sure, if they trained enough they could totally fight [insert some male MMA champ here].

Somewhere we lost the understanding that what the Suffragettes were fighting for was equal intellectual standing with men. Not trying to say that there are no physical differences between men and women at all.

Edited

The Buffy example given is particularly stupid given that Buffy had slayer strength and agility (i.e essentially superpowers).

The episode 'Helpless' where she is deliberately injected with drugs to diminish her powers as part of a test. She is then vulnerable as she now has normal strength and agility and must use her wit and cunning instead.

Wonder Woman - a super hero with superhuman strength and speed.

Xena - one of the episodes hinted that she's the daughter of Ares, a Greek God. Also, she's fictious.

When I see these examples being used as evidence of the normal woman on the street being able to overcome men, I seriously doubt that person's critical thinking ability.

Brilliant. 😂

It's all over X today, it's completely hilarious. On a different thread someone else started, this exchange made me chuckle:

Jennifer - No wonder the British are doing so much better than we are at this. 50 people to a terf cell! I bet they have cool code names and secret passwords, too. We should follow their lead. From now on, I will be known as Pineapple.

Ian - Mangelwurzel to Pineapple: "The herons are flying early this year..."

Jennifer - Frantically searching my codebook...

Mary - My hovercraft is full of eels

Jennifer - Eels are swimming west by moonlight.

We're currently listening to Guards, Guards! (again) and you've made me think of this exchange -

"Are you sure the ill-built tower doesn't tremble mightily at a butterfly's passage?" "Nope. Bean soup it is. I'm sorry." "What about the caged whale?" "What about it?" "It should know nothing of the mighty deeps, if you must know." "Oh, the caged whale. You want the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night. Three doors down."

MarieDeGournay · 06/05/2025 17:07

Whatever you do, don't mention the secret handshake that only we know about!!
Oh...
Right, I'll get my camouflage jacket and leave.
If I can find it. Where's my camouflage jacket? Has anyone seen my camouflage jacket? I put it down somewhere and now I can't find it - just goes to show how good it is, eh?
😄

Waitwhat23 · 06/05/2025 17:15

Don't worry, the secret handshake is quite a tricky one and takes a while to master. I can't quite remember it (muses - is it wriggle pinkie then hop three times or two?)

I just opened my purse and a few moths and a tumbleweed rolled out ceremoniously.

Clearly I'm doing this terfing thing wrong.

It's really not that hard, here let me show you whilst you read the instructions. There's only 50 steps to it.

I am fairly certain that at least one of the steps involves icing a lemon drizzle cake.
