There are loads of ai-generated pics on this thread. It is anti-feminist environmentally destructive tech and we should use it sparingly and mindfully if at all.

GreenFriedTomato · 07/05/2025 12:48

@ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously how is it anti-feminist (and environmentally destructive) ? Genuine question. It's not something i've heard before

Edited for sp.

EweSurname · 07/05/2025 12:49

I get the environmentally destructive but stuck on the anti-feminist. Would you mind elaborating?

It's a manifestation of the Omnicause.

EweSurname · 07/05/2025 12:50

It takes a lot of electricity and also water to cool down the servers.

PlanetVulcan · 07/05/2025 12:52

The data use of AI is incredibly carbon-heavy (see above post regarding electricity and water-cooling).

As for anti-feminist I think it's in reference to the fact many images are fashioned in the "male gaze", or more accurately from a patriarchal gaze e.g. women with big boobs and tiny waists etc. Due to I guess algorithms being developed by men, lots of images to go on from a very patriarchal internet.

PlanetVulcan · 07/05/2025 12:53

I do like a good AI picture though 😢

GreenFriedTomato · 07/05/2025 12:59

All I'm seeing here is gerbils and charts

Boiledbeetle · 07/05/2025 13:00

I think my carbon footprint is offset by the fact I chose not to procreate.

Swings and roundabouts.

I think it's more like

TRA: Cleans the kitchen? Huh. Never really thought about it. Not a big thing for me.

Or
No one ever mentioned that was a problem

Has it occurred to you that feminists using AI are feeding the model and redressing the balance with female input?

Boiledbeetle · 07/05/2025 13:21

If anyone would like to repent on my behalf (because I'm sure as hell not about to) I can sell you some sackcloth and ashes

Gender bias in the data and global warming disproportionately impacts women.

So we should just leave it all to the boys?

I'm training AI models as part of my work.

I also generate images for fun. Every time I tell AI to remove men from a whimsical image, I'm training it further. Every time I tell it that lionesses don't have manes, I'm training it.

Shall I just stop?

Nooooo! It's finally getting the hang of a lioness doesn't have a mane, don't stop now!!

How does that song go from Made in Dagenham, that's all about sexism?

If you want something done ask a busy woman
'cos you're wasting your time asking a man....
she can do in one hour what he can't do in ten
it's the basic effing difference between us and effing them
if you want it done then ask a busy woman

If you want something done ask a busy woman
she's got more energy than the sun
she's always there no matter what
if you lose your key or lose the plot
the strength of a rhino, the patience of a nun,
it ain't no sprint its a marathon
if you want it done then ask a busy woman.

Mummy issues everywhere in the GI movement. Absolutely everywhere.

I know we're not supposed to quote qiant posts, and NAWALT, obvs, starting with my mother, but that's fantastic! 😋

AI is indeed swings and roundabouts. This article says AI uses less carbon than the human artist and writer counterparts it is increasingly displacing:

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-024-54271-x

The article doesn't say that AI use less carbon than a human writer or illustrator full stop, it claims that AI uses less carbon than a writer/illustrator using other forms of computer-based technologies, not sitting down with a pen and paper.

we also calculate the carbon footprint of the devices that human illustrators may use while working, using similar calculations as in the writing comparison above. The carbon footprint for a laptop operating for the duration of a human illustrator creating an image (3.2 h) is 100 g CO2e. The footprint of that duration for a desktop computer is 280 g CO2e.

No carbon footprint has been calculated for a human using paper [from responsibly managed sources, of course] and pen [made from recycled and recyclable material😇] and endless cups of tea [organic, fair tradeHalo]

Crikey, get a grip

some people will take literally any opportunity to pick away at others innit?

One wonders if a Reddit poster has wandered in at times.

That delicious-sounding rhubarb-cake-meringue combo upthread - does 'best eaten fresh' actually mean 'best eaten almost at once, when barely cooled, but if you eat it all at once the results will far surpass dragon fruit, so it needs to be shared, ideally with your terf cell'?

I want to make it, so I need to know.

One of the ultimate cakes is Nigella's boiled orange chocolate cake. No gluten and no dairy, so great for some of the allergic (contains nuts and eggs), keeps well and is delicious. Can be served on elegant china with marscapone at a dinner party, or just shovelled down in the kitchen, as you stand by the worktop having just washed up and wiped down, and are contemplating what next on your 649-item Director of Home Affairs to-do list you ought to face up to next.

Edited-posted too soon.

Best eaten on the day it's made, the meringue goes a bit soggy when you keep it too long although that depends on the moisture in the air. It's currently so dry here at the West coast it would be fine a day or two later still.

AI is going to have a huge impact - it's a fair point to consider how it affects us. Might make an interesting thread, actually. AI and feminism.
