The phrase "Protect the Dolls" is associated with supporting transgender women. According to People, the shirt was part of a campaign by by American designer Conner Ives. The term "dolls" refers to an affectionate term within the LGBTQ+ community to refer to transgender women.

He’s just called JKR a 'heinous loser' and also called for a Harry Potter boycott. Good luck with that!

Really? Oh, that's probably a mistake. It could end up a bit of a David Tennant movement. Pedro Pascal is a popular actor, but he's just been killed off on his latest project, which is now being helmed solo by the unlikeable enby Bella Ramsay. The popularity of The Last Of Us is about to go through the floor, and now people have nothing to tune into every week to feel attached to him.

I suspect the fan hero worship of Pedro is about to fall off, for the first time in a decade. He's been beloved since he played Oberyn on Game of Thrones, but if the example of David Tennant is anything to go by, that only gets you so far when you start spouting off against women like this. I was amazed how fast David Tennant lost popularity. I suspect Pedro's downfall will be just as rapid. Oh well.

It's actually quite apt for a group of men who see women as a fetishised, hyperfeminised state of objecthood.

Gives me 'expectant arsehole and blank, blank eyes' vibes.

Was just thinking this, as you do when stuck in traffic. If TWs are being categorised as ‘dolls’ it reduces them to something artificial, infantile and objectifies them as powerless. If I were a TW, I’d find that deeply insulting.

In fact, as a woman with S. African family where referencing women as ‘doll’s was commonplace a few decades ago (as was the expectation that women should be married at 17, pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen with only their black maid as back up), I find it offensive to associate any woman or trans woman with ‘dolls’. 🤮

Urgh, what an arse. Shame, I quite like the Last of Us. Although it is a poundshop Walking Dead.

Harsh. I thought the episode with the relationship between the two gay men was beautiful, both writing and acting. I think one of the actors won an award.

Some of the best TV I’ve seen in years.

If it makes you feel better he isn't in S2 for long (spoiler)

Good News, thanks. I will continue watching it in that case.

UrsulasHerbBag · 24/04/2025 12:25

Not all in for the TiFs then? Just the TiMs. More misogyny and dismissal of women. He only gives a shit because his brother is now his sister called “Lux”.

He's about several years too late to the 'boycott JKRs stuff' party isn't he?

Spoiler alert - it didn't work! Just look at those Hogwarts Legacy sales, and that's for starters! 😂

In South London Cockney slang an attractive woman is a "sausage". Sausage= sausage roll = doll.

Mildly sexist but there you go.

That doesn’t rhyme at all in my Scottish accent.

elgreco · 24/04/2025 13:00

It doesn't rhyme in any accent.

I read recently on X that it means an attractive transwoman who 'passes'
Why they need protecting I've no idea 🙄
I'm sure they'd still have that 'uncanny valley' vibe.

lol, they all think they pass! They are literally delusional. Even most feminine gay men who try to present as female don't actually pass. Its just more misogyny from these men and their chasers. These men hate women.

Ah yes, poor David didn’t realise how many fans he upset with his comments. Mr Tennant, a vocal supporter of trans rights, said: "I don’t wish ill of her; I just wish her to shut up." Is that all women David?

The thing is all these media/journo lovies are out of touch with the bulk of the population.

TBF ‘sausage’ would be appropriate for transwomen

Anyway Desigual have not had the dolls memo

Certainly does and like most dolls they are creepy AF.

"protect the dolls" - what is this?
MassiveWordSalad · 24/04/2025 13:24

My random thoughts around the word “doll”.

It makes me think of childhood and how girls are mocked by boys for playing with dolls (when it’s action man and wrestling figures it’s different, apparently).

Creepy homunculus-type things out of a horror movie.

A fake, plastic representation of a woman or girl.

Sex dolls 🤢

Rolls and Dolls rhyme in my London accent

Can you explain how? What else do they both rhyme with?

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 24/04/2025 13:31

@MassiveWordSalad oddly enough I usually think the opposite way on the childhood issue, how girls are told to play with dolls because Action Man was a boy's toy and "not for you". I did have some sort of army Barbie once but even she had bloody high hells on.

The word doll also makes me now either think of the horrors that are Bratz Dolls or the terrifying ones on the most recent series of Traitors!

Beamur · 24/04/2025 13:33

Roll and doll rhyme with each other if you have a London/Essex accent.

Yes they may ‘pass’ in a still headshot Insta photo with heavy make up straight after shaving, but they don’t pass IRL ever. Huge shoulders and hands a lot of the time, Adam’s apple, feet, shape of hips and legs. Voice, hairline, ears.

Finally, I have something to contribute to FWR!

Cockney rhyming slang is usually a two word sentence that rhymes with the one word meaning but then only the first word of the slang is used. For instance:

apples and pears - stairs - “I’m going up the apples”
Rosie Lee - tea - “anyone want a cup of Rosie?”
Ruby Murray - curry - “I really fancy a ruby”
sausage roll - doll - “taking my sausage to the pictures tonight”
