Politicians respond to the SC judgement

ArabellaScott · 17/04/2025 10:59

A thread to gather politicians' responses to yesterday's Supreme Court judgement.

  1. Stella Creasy. She's rather unhelpfully posted a pdf, (and turned off replies), so archive below.

Ruth Crawford (who acted for the SG) is one of the office bearers at the Faculty, all of whom have agreed that letter.

Holy moly.

Boom.

It totally had 'enemy of the people' vibes and I'm very glad people in high places are also seeing this and objecting.

According to the BBC article Personpeeps thinks this is her job

to "stand up and represent trans people".

That's not her job. She should resign or be sacked.

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 22/04/2025 15:36

I think this is a very good example of FAFO!!

I see she’s doubling down on it, I think she sees herself as some sort of martyr, when in actuality she’ll just be remembered as that Scottish politician who was totally divorced from reality.

RedToothBrush · 22/04/2025 15:48

It's noteworthy that the Starmer story is currently the lead story on the BBC website
(In other words, despite the death of the Pope, this issue isn't going away and Starmer has been forced to acknowledge it's not going away).

Guardian doing a live timeline on the "woman" issues:

Keir Starmer no longer believes trans women are women, says No 10 at briefing – UK politics live

No longer believes…”!!!

So he’s changed his mind - WTF? He needs the courts to tell him what to think about the most commonplace, obvious facts of existence? 🙄

I guess even if she did have a private wobble, she has no choice but to double down. The Right Side of History will not brook any deviation from the Bundle of Good.

Oh dear Lord, in less than a minute, he says give real clarity, has real clarity we needed clarity, important we have clarity.

This is what happens when you are completely wrong.

You have absolutely nowhere to go. I and millions of women could write reams. without using the same word twice, because we're right and we've got a million different ways of expressing it.

He has no other words, because he is incapable of articulating the SC concept, as fundamentally he has disagreed with it.

So all he can do is substitute an understanding that women are people too, with the non-partisan acceptance that something has been made clear to him.

That's it. His stance is that something has been made clear to him. The end.

This💯

Preet Kaur Gill MP (Labour)

'Single-sex facilities are mandatory in workplaces and schools. The judgment has put it beyond doubt that the Equality Act, with other legislation, requires these to be provided according to biological sex.'

Well, well, well! Roddy Dunlop was forthright in his analysis, wasn't he? Crisp legalese for, "Sack this loony now."

And Starmer & Co confirming that women have always been from Eastasia...

SameyMcNameChange · 23/04/2025 07:30

Green Party co-leader Adrian Ramsay on Today programme around 7.20am today. Pressed hard by Nick Robinson. Said he thought there was/should be a place for gender critical people in the Greens. ‘Welcomed clarity’ that single sex spaces can be provided. Would not be drawn on whether he thought the law should be changed, said he was waiting for the guidance.

I really want to see which way the Greens go on this. If they stick to their current line, which I think is that it is official policy that TWAW, they will become a political outlier, and will find out pretty quickly that they will be asked about this stance in every political interview they do.

Good to hearm Ramsay has been on the more sensible side so far.

Denyer, however ...

Adrian was a bit of a train crash. Nick bringing up the expulsion of women from the GP, good for him. AR resolutely refusing to say that TWAM. Very complex, he says.

'In nearly 25 years in daily journalism, I have never known another issue quite like it.
The arguments over sex and gender, trans and women's rights have a passion, an anger and often a toxicity on both sides greater in their intensity than those over the Iraq war two decades ago, or Brexit in more recent years.
The abuse and vitriol that fly into my inbox every time I report on it are really quite something.'

Chris Mason, BBC political editor.

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch stands at a microphone in the House of Commons. She wears a white suit jacket and black shirt.

Chris Mason: Gender debate has changed but it's not over yet

The landmark Supreme Court ruling has changed the tone of the conversation, our political editor writes.

I would be interesting if he spelled out which side most of the abuse and vitriol came from.

KnottyAuty · 23/04/2025 08:24

Are we meant to just swallow all this crap now?
This is the equivalent of a wife beater saying sorry I love you really, then the woman is supposed to just move on. Fuck that.

I don’t want this dragged out. I’dike a quick solution. We do a ticket lottery at the Royal Albert Hall for members of the public. Anyone in public office who ever said TWAW has to come out on stage and strip off/change into hospital scrubs/army uniform/prison suit etc in from of the crowd. No cameras or film or anything. But just one big “empathy” session where they might finally “get it”?

And ALL the BBC news team will need to do the strip. Not just the top brass. Guardian too. And I want a refund on 10 years of licence fee where they didn’t cover this issue.

Anyone heard Diana Johnson, Labour MP doing media rounds this morning saying the Met Police have told her the photos of the abusive placards are from historic marches ? An interviewer on Times radio rightly asked her about the photo the union boss shared saying terfs should be hung. We are still being lied to !

borntobequiet · 23/04/2025 08:44

The Met is doing its utmost to deny or minimise the placards. I really wonder why? It’s surely more than their ingrained, bog-standard misogyny.

borntobequiet · 23/04/2025 08:46

This is its management board, according to its website:

The management board, responsible for the strategic direction of the Met, is chaired by the Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley and comprises:

  • Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley
  • Deputy Commissioner Dame Lynne Owens
  • Frontline Policing: Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist
  • Met Operations: Assistant Commissioner Pippa Mills
  • Specialist Operations: Assistant Commissioner Matt Jukes
  • Professionalism: T/Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor
  • Trust and Legitimacy: T/Assistant Commissioner Rachel Williams
  • Chief Digital, Data and Technology Officer Darren Scates
  • Chief Communications and Engagement Officer Sharon Sawers
  • Chief People and Resources Officer Clare Davies
  • Chief Finance Officer Dan Worsley
  • Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer Adrian Scott
