Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Aren’t the front pages and headlines glorious!

I know there is a fair amount of bandwagon jumping, but it feels like the newspapers have finally read the room and realised that the SC ruling is welcomed by FAR more people than it disappoints. And so the front pages have smiling faces and headlines that would never have been published before.

Even, for example, the Metro which has had a pretty shocking record before has a pretty clear headline and a picture of smiling women.

Front pages of The Times and the Daily Mail for 17 April

Newspaper headlines: 'Victory for women' and 'equity policies in chaos'

Thursday's front pages lead on the Supreme Court's ruling that a woman is defined by biological sex under equalities law.

Not a squeak, as far as I've seen. He did find time to mention holiday traffic jams though.

JohnTheRevelator · 18/04/2025 16:45

I think this is great news, but I can't let myself get too excited about it, because I just know that the trans community will challenge it to the hilt and it will probably end up being overturned. How utterly depressing.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 18/04/2025 16:58

Overturned by whom? Parliament could do it with new legislation, but I doubt they want the hassle and sunlight.

NotAtMyAge · 18/04/2025 18:01

There is no way of appealing a Supreme Court judgment unless possibly via the European Court of Human Rights.

RayonSunrise · 18/04/2025 19:51

Yes, for anything to go through Parliament there would have to be debates and discussions, and this whole topic now has a big grassroots following and politicians who are aware that votes could be won or lost depending on the positions they take on any proposed legislation. Things are VERY different to how they were 10 years ago. “No debate” is well and truly finished.

Supporterofwomensrights · 18/04/2025 20:13

And eroding women's rights is to be on the side of the 'rapist gender'. Anyone tempted to go down this route could ask Nicola Sturgeon how it worked out for her.

I shouldn't be surprised but the radio silence from our PM and most of his cabinet is quite bizarre. What are they waiting for?

Doesnt the silence tell us what we need to know? Speaking volumes for me

TheOtherRaven · 18/04/2025 20:52

I'd think there's frantic ploughing through the judgement with legal teams trying to work out what they cannot get away from, and how to spin this before they start to respond - and that will include the guidance coming from the EHRC that sets out how this is actually going to look in practice, because this is a disaster for them. Mr 99% of women don't have penises is living in a world where all the receipts are up on social media, and where the entire establishment is operating policies and practice that as it turns out, has been illegal.

I'm not sure where to put this, I don't want to open yet another thread, so I'm putting it here. Janice Turner in the Times:

Wow! I’m really humbled by all these fantastic, knowledgeable women who say it all far better than I can.

Celebrating causing immense psychological trauma to hundreds of thousands of people in this country is sickening. There are many in the transgender community who are currently feeling suicidal as a result of the Supreme Courts ruling. They are feeling like they have just been raped.

The lack of empathy shown towards those negatively affected by this ruling by those who support the ruling and were involved in getting it, is way more frightening then any alleged threat posed by members of the trans community sharing women only spaces.

Please stop the hyperbole. You’re helping no one. Trans people were lied to by Stonewall and the government. Please direct your complaints there.

We all recognise that many will be very upset by the judgement because for years women have lived with similar distress. Please be empathetic and educate yourself

Away with your tone policing and coercive control. Had the powerful trans lobbyists showed some respect for women, stepped away from their mission to transition children below the age of consent and sought democratic consent for their removal of women's rights, they wouldn't be faced with being told that they've ignored the rights of others and must stop.

Long overdue for them to grow up and start behaving like responsible members of society, respecting others and contributing rather than expecting everyone to pander to their evey demand.

Transpeople and their allies, especially the TRAs and MRAs, have been causing psychological trauma to hundreds and thousands of women and girls over the past decade or so, illegally. But you didn't care about us did you? Why do you expect us to suddenly #bekind to those who have harmed us?

They are feeling like they have just been raped.

I am genuinely horrified that you have felt it fitting to correlate this to a judgement which clarifies the existing guidelines in the EQA2010 and which has been ignored to the detriment of women and girls, many of whom have been harmed in prisons, in refuges and other places.

This type of hyperbole, when there has been no empathy or care given to women and girls, is why any sort of misguided sympathy by those who are new to this discussion for entitled men to be allowed to access the spaces to which they are not (and have never been) entitled has imploded and has been entirely predicted by women, aware of all this, who knew that male rage at being denied their demands would come out white hot at women who dared to say 'no more'.

'Raped'! How dare you!?

Tell the transpeople to point their fingers at the organisations that lied to them.

Actually, seriously, how dare you.

Even just in Edinburgh and the Lothians, women have been denied access to the single sex rape crisis services they needed. A 15 year old girl who had been gang raped was denied single sex care. Women who had been been raped were turned away from services and told to 'reframe their trauma' and lied to by a staff who considered their ideology more important than the women they were meant to help. Women who wanted the choice to request (not demand, but simply request) a female medical examiner after their rape were told they were bigots by their own elected representatives.

Seriously, how dare you

The minority is covered in the Equality Act. Time for campaigners to start working on trans sports events and leagues, prison provision for trans offenders, shelters for trans DV victims, etc - you know, just as women had to at the beginning of women’s rights.

I couldn't agree more. Well said👏👏👏

And here we have a fine example of men who have been legally denied access to vulnerable, unconsenting women, losing their shit because they're being thwarted.

Likening it to rape is just more of the same tedious, deliberate fuckery.

I'm tempted to say cope and seethe..
