Aren’t the front pages and headlines glorious!

I know there is a fair amount of bandwagon jumping, but it feels like the newspapers have finally read the room and realised that the SC ruling is welcomed by FAR more people than it disappoints. And so the front pages have smiling faces and headlines that would never have been published before.

Even, for example, the Metro which has had a pretty shocking record before has a pretty clear headline and a picture of smiling women.

Front pages of The Times and the Daily Mail for 17 April

Newspaper headlines: 'Victory for women' and 'equity policies in chaos'

Thursday's front pages lead on the Supreme Court's ruling that a woman is defined by biological sex under equalities law.

Brilliant but did you notice Metro uses gender assigned at birth when it should say sex!

Viviennemary · 17/04/2025 07:30

Everyone with a grain of sense knows what a woman is. And it's not a man.

Supporterofwomensrights · 17/04/2025 07:37

The paragraph at the end couldn't be more po faced. Headlines say it's going to cause chaos. TW judge says there will be a battle/fight for rights. Such a shame they couldn't find a woman anywhere for a celebratory quote about our rights.

@SameyMcNameChange

this has not solved anything I fear
its created other issues

ps if you read the daily mail I worry for you

TheOtherRaven · 17/04/2025 07:49

Battle and fight for rights.... what rights? The only thing that can be meant by that is the 'right' to invade women's spaces and access them in a state of undress regardless of the women's consent, access, beliefs or anything else. That's not a 'right'. PLEASE take that into a court room and try that one on someone, I'll order all the popcorn.

No man has lost anything by having to respect a woman's right to a space of her own unless what he wanted from her was something entirely inappropriate.

But yes, the pictures are wonderful. At least some papers are celebrating that women now have a definition in law, and the right to not be subordinated and controlled and viewed in a state of undress by men who have no respect for them. And cannot see women as anything except a resource they have a 'right' to.

I'll read whatever newspaper I like. And the Daily Mail was always more accurate than the Guardian on this topic.

TheColourOutOfSpace · 17/04/2025 08:00

I've been feeling so emotional seeing all these pictures. And so proud to see Scottish women take this all the way to the very top and be vindicated. There's so much still to do in Scotland, but fuck me, we did it. 🥂

Grumpsy · 17/04/2025 08:02

They are indeed 🥂🎉

Appalonia · 17/04/2025 08:04

We've gone from #nodebate to the front page of EVERY SINGLE NEWSPAPER IN THE UK! Bloody brilliant😁

FeralWoman · 17/04/2025 08:20

It’s made it to Australia too. It was one of the first stories tonight on Channel 10 5pm news. It was before any mention of any politicians, even though we have a federal election coming up in about a fortnight. The story was very careful to be as neutral as possible.

I was disappointed to hear them say trans exclusionary radical feminists. Not TERFs but the full term.

Still, it’s good that the news has covered it. They mentioned that it remains to be seem what the worldwide impact of the ruling is, or something like that.

NotBadConsidering · 17/04/2025 08:21

I like the “Born Winners” one!

And yes, I love the Daily Mail on this topic. No need for anyone to worry about me, I’ll be quite alright you know.

No, don't worry for me. I'm intelligent enough to make my own mind up about what I read. You not?

One of the best things about having this splashed all over the front pages of the papers, ALL papers, is that it reaches people who are not informed about this issue, who just never knew things had got as bad as they had for women. They're looking at it thinking "of course it's about biological sex. WTF?" Peaked!

Do you only read one newspaper or from one side of a debate? Then i feel sorry for you.

Daily Mail had been excellent on this issue. Guardian didn’t even know the sex of murderers or rapists

potionsmistress · 17/04/2025 09:38

Does the judgement mean IPSO guidelines need to change around using female pronouns when journalists write about trans identifying men?

tallcurvey · 17/04/2025 09:40

@BobnLen

still shows the vial daily mail.

NotBadConsidering · 17/04/2025 09:45

I really want to know who IS top of the TV rich list now. So two reasons to pick up a copy on the way home.

Puttinginthemiles · 17/04/2025 09:54

The Independent headlines today are a disgrace. No mention of the clarity this brings and the potential positive impact on women's safety, dignity and comfort in any of their four headlines.

Have added photo which will be added after review by MN I guess.

Aren’t the front pages and headlines glorious!
Happyinarcon · 17/04/2025 10:04

It’s a hollow victory to be honest, the fact that this nonsense got so far shows that our government doesn’t represent us at all

EasternStandard · 17/04/2025 10:13

Glorious indeed. I love the jubilant women shots.

So good.

That’s incredible. I didn’t realise they were so bad.

Edited

Worth noting that the Daily Mail has a proud history of taking up unpopular but just causes.

It was the only paper to call out the cover up and injustice in the murder of Stephen Lawrence, exposing the real killers. It continued to campaign with Doreen for justice for Stephen, even though its journalists and editor were receiving credible death threats and threats of violence from the killers and their families.

The Mail then spent years campaigning for a full and fearless investigation of institutional racism in the Met Police, which was finally granted and led to root and branch policing reform.

I also admired the way in which the Mail took up the cause of David Kelly, highlighting the bullying and harrassment he received from the Government (Alastair Campbell and the BBC).

The Guardian and the BBC toed the line on both these issues and showed themselves comprehensively on the wrong side of history. As in the trans issue,

GiveMeSpanakopita · 17/04/2025 11:30

Oh and can we also please take a moment to luxuriate in how RARE it is to see middle aged women, with ordinary middle aged woman bodies, celebrating their success on the front page of ANY newspaper?

It's striking because it's RARE!
