Catriona Renton looking a bit choked up on BBC news just now, not sure which way though.

She's sounding quite excited now so I think she's probably GC.

Shout out to Maya Forstater, Helen Joyce and Joanna Cherry.

AndrogynousElf · 16/04/2025 10:17

Wonderful news.

Hints at homophobia inherent in this 👍

As a homo of 50 years’ standing thrilled at the explicit standing up for Lesbians’ right to spaces without men.
I see no homophobic intent but do I hark a dog whistle?

Trans people haven't lost any rights under the judgement, they're still protected under the EA..Ooh, that's a stinger.

I don't think many - if any - people here want trans people not to be protected against genuine discrimination. The crucial thing is that the comparator is the right one - e.g. a transwoman getting discriminated against would be compared to a man, not a woman. That seems to be what we've got here.

It sounds like they have completely drawn the teeth from the GRA. By ensuring that a GRC doesn't actually get you any additional rights (and why should it, especially if no one's allowed to ask if you've got one? 🙄) it makes it just a bit of paper to say you have gender feelings... Is this the closest we're going to get, realistically, to repealing it? Or an I just giddy with shock and delight? 😂

Ramblingnamechanger · 16/04/2025 10:18

Going to be covered on Woman’s Hour today. Apparently.

bignosebignose · 16/04/2025 10:19

Poor old James O'Brien on LBC is straight in there with queries about underpants inspections, etc. Must dig out my Gender Woo bingo card.

wantmorenow · 16/04/2025 10:19

OMG in tears. The BBC is still pandering though to the trans ideology. Hopefully I can be more confident to express GRC in work (education) now.

Catlady63 · 16/04/2025 10:19

It's amazing! Let's be happy today - happy that a court has said that men aren't women! - but it's fantastic.

Huge respect for the women who've tirelessly fought for this.

eurochick · 16/04/2025 10:19

I am surprised and delighted. It’s incredible that FWS had to go all the way to the Supremes to find judges that agree with them over something that seems absolutely obvious to most lay people but they got the result that we needed. Hurrah.

I feel sorry for any transgender person who is saddened by today’s ruling. I think the judge was wise to say that this shouldn’t be celebrated as one group triumphing over another.

But my overall feelings are of relief, that common sense has prevailed, and that women are defined as such to the exclusion of those who simply feel that they are women.

To those people I wish you love and respect, and you have my sympathy for being in a position that I can imagine is very difficult for you. But you are not women.

It is not one group triumphing over another.

It is one ideology triumphing over another.

I am happy to celebrate a setback for the absurd notion that identity trumps biological sex.

BackToLurk · 16/04/2025 10:19

I'm quite emotional. Merry Terfmas one and all.

(And why the fuck wasn't this sorted out sooner)

TheOtherRaven · 16/04/2025 10:19

Oh thank God.

Trans people still protected by the EA - yes of course, in their legal relationship to the state, and no woman here ever wanted otherwise!

But equality cannot mean trampling women who don't share the belief that a man is a woman because he tells her so. This is absolutely not one group triumphing over another, it's women fucking relieved that they're not subordinated and removed in law by men with zero care or respect for anything but their own wishes. It re establishes equality.

But to activists, women having equality of consideration to them, and an equal right to words and spaces of their own is 'hate', so this will go down like a bucket of cold sick.

sweetsardineface · 16/04/2025 10:19

And the Scottish government’s reputation sinks even lower than anyone thought was possible. How much money and time have they wasted on this rubbish over the years?

inigomontoyahwillcox · 16/04/2025 10:19

I am punching the air right now!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 16/04/2025 10:20

Dotjones · 16/04/2025 10:16

Interesting and better than I'd expected. Good that the Scottish government's position has been shown to be thoroughly wrong and that a woman has to be born a woman.

I have concerns as to what this means going forward. The ruling suggested to me that we're still going to be in an impasse. Women's spaces are now protected but trans people can't be discriminated against. What does that mean in prisons for example? It sounds now like transwomen can't be sent to women's prison, but they have protection from going to men's prison because that would lead to discrimination.

It now appears to me that we're still in a dangerous mess. Above all, the whole thing is reliant on points of law. Laws can be changed - the ruling here mainly says that the Scottish government acted wrongly, but Westminister is still controlled by a man who can't say whether a woman has a penis or not.

Yes this ruling is better than most of us hoped for, but while transpeople have loud voices and have their own legal protections there remains a risk that what's good news today might not be tomorrow.

I could be wrong but I think Labour would have to be very, very stupid to pass new legislation overturning the SC judgment right now.

I think the Lib Dems and the Greens are stupid enough to think that was a good idea, but Labour aren't. And Wes Streeting (who clearly peaked some time ago) has his eyes on the leadership.

Fenlandia · 16/04/2025 10:15

How does this work with people like Dr Upton who says that Uptonself is a 'biological woman' because they is a woman and they is biological?

He is incorrect in law, but can maintain his personal delusion if he likes, I suppose

HellonHeels · 16/04/2025 10:20

I've been too anxious to look. Thank you for the updates, I can read without worry now.

Bloody well done everyone who's fought for this.

TheOtherRaven · 16/04/2025 10:20

FWS I am so bloody grateful. This has been years of hell and every woman in this country owes you. Even if they haven't realised it yet.

NessieDoesExistYes · 16/04/2025 10:20

Ok so tell me how this works for simple everyday spaces like women's loos?
Does this mean transwomen are banned?

Does it mean that places that have only 'gender neutral' loos [such as some galleries in London like Somerset House] will have to now create women-only loos?

Justme56 · 16/04/2025 10:20

Fabulous result - well done all the women who made this happen. ❤️

zanahoria · 16/04/2025 10:21

A GRC is nothing but a legal fiction and those have limitations.

Adopted mothers are legally recognized mothers but none of them ever started believing they gave birth to a child.

OvaHere · 16/04/2025 10:21

Fenlandia · 16/04/2025 10:15

How does this work with people like Dr Upton who says that Uptonself is a 'biological woman' because they is a woman and they is biological?

People in positions of authority need to become comfortable with the phrase "Nah, you're chatting shit, mate" or the workplace friendly version of that!

Hopefully judgements like this will empower more people to do this.

Fenlandia · 16/04/2025 10:21

RedToothBrush · 16/04/2025 10:16

It means legally Fife are fucked.

Well I obviously hope so but I want to see if biological woman is properly defined in the judgement. TRAs will pick at anything to justify their crusade.

To those people I wish you love and respect, and you have my sympathy for being in a position that I can imagine is very difficult for you. But you are not women.

The sooner common sense prevails and unreasonable demands/solutions are rejected, the sooner workable solutions can be put in place to address issues people with trans identities face. So long as TRAs hold out for gender identity replacing sex, and until they give up on rejecting any/all solutions that don’t capitulate to this formulation, workable solutions will not be found

Hadn't expected to feel so emotional. Bought down to earth by the fact that the Guardian's first comment on the live feed was from Scottish Trans.
