My husband has brought home a bottle of champagne to celebrate the win ❤️

That's lovely, Clio

Many thanks @NoBinturongsHereMate for the clarification - I think I was getting confused with the internal disciplinary SP is subject to.

Well that makes two doctors doesn't it who are!

To be fair to actual doctors, I believe one of the two (Webberly) was struck off.

Amusing, though, to watch the BBC, who've been gripped with this stupidity for years, tying themselves in knots

Well, given there are over 400 trans identified people working for the BBC, I'm guessing there are some frantic meetings about toilets. 😁

I had no idea it was so many, @Datun, though this being the BBC I really shouldn't be surprised Hmm

From the BBC coverage

"We all need to think about how we take this forward", says Graham Leadbitter, an MP for the SNP.

"It's particularly important to remember that trans people are amongst the most discriminated against in society and they have some of the highest suicide risk", he added.

Is this correct? I seem to remember evidence that the statistics for violent crime skew the other way.

Suicide facts and myths

The threat that children may commit suicide if parents do not support their social and medical transition is not born out by the facts.

It's word soup at best, but underlying might be the idea that you can identify out of disability.
I think disability can be framed differently and more positively, which can be helpful for one's mental state. And it is important to underline that it doesn't make people any lesser.
But the limitations that a disability brings with it are still there which is why it's important to keep campaigning for support to balance an impairment.

They might have thrown the reframing for psychological reasons and the understanding that a disability doesn't make you a lesser person and the magic TRA touch to make you a different being into one concept.
But even with that generous interpretation it's still offensive.

Thanks for trying to make sense of that, you've done better than I could.

Bloody hell they don’t waste any time with misinterpreting the judgment do they? Don’t they have lawyers to help them out?

I noticed the BBC news explainer this evening was from the social affairs unit. She wasn’t great, but it made me think about how far we’ve come since Ben Hunte of the BBC stonewall division.

MrsPeterHarris · 16/04/2025 19:15

Fucking hell though, the Channel 4 interviewer still seems captured or at pains to centre men & men’s feelings.

Maya is on channel 4 news now.

Reporter saying ‘many people would disagree with you’ to Maya saying trans women are vulnerable but they’re a vulnerable group of men, and need to be protected as that - e.g in prisons.

Well reporter lady - many people actually AGREE with Maya. And now so does the Supreme Court. So there.

I was hooting, she had so much trouble with her terminology.

I might look for it on iPlayer to laugh all over again.

As I understand it they either exclude men, all men, or they can't call it single sex or women only. Other legislation, such as H&S, mandates separation sex toilets and changing rooms. So they must be available and tw are excluded from the ones for women. Third spaces can be provided, I suppose.

I remember the RSPB advertising 'women only' night walks last spring about £20 for a place. In the small print these walks were available to tw and nbHmm I don't think they could legally do that now. They could fall foul of trading standards or sex discrimination for excluding men who don't claim to have lady brains. But ianal and I look forward to see how things like this will pan out.

That's my understanding too. This was one of my main gripes with allowing men into women's spaces. The deception. Lulling women into a sense of false security that they were in safe single sex spaces when, in fact, they were no such thing. Now we can ensure that our employers and other organisations either provide those single sex spaces or stop lying and make it clear that those "female toilets" are no such thing, so that women know what we are accessing.

Signalbox · 16/04/2025 19:19

Jolyon Maugham on the SC judgment. Still lying about suicide stats.

The result – as every trans person knows – is an epidemic of suicide. And even that reality is denied to them – government departments are stretching every sinew to prevent publication of suicide statistics which are acutely embarrassing to ministers who like to pretend to care.

The Supreme Court ignored trans voices. I’m ashamed of what our law has become | Good Law Project

The Supreme Court’s decision to exclude trans voices has harmed trans people – and harmed the fairness of their ruling.

I wondered about this too.

Google seems to think that the BBC has around 22,000 employees so 400 is about 1.8%

Now we just need an accurate estimate for the percentage trans identifying in the general population - less than 0.5%?

I wonder where this leaves the Darlington nurses?

I wonder if they will return to the changing room and for Rose to move to the cupboard?!

Don't know if this has been shared yet but the singing on this sky news clip gives goosebumps. First heard it on the radio and had to find it again. Radio presenter suggested she'd make it her ring tone.

Thanks for trying to make sense of that, you've done better than I could.

It's a guess, but they might have used the concept of "social disability", that your environment contributes to disability because most things are set up for healthy / neurotypical people, on the TRA cause and got confused along the way. Which is not surprising as I don't think the concept could be transferred to that cause.

Well reporter lady - many people actually AGREE with Maya. And now so does the Supreme Court. So there.

The 'many people would disagree with you' attack does seem to be appearing more and more often.

Didn't Nuala use it to get-the-last-word-in on Julie Bindel when discussing sex work on WH a couple of days ago?

With nearly 70 million people in the UK, it is not hard to find some pretty crazy points of view that are held by 'many people'.
