Terf signals/colours

Do you wear anything like a badge, scarf etc or carry anything (such as a key ring or visible sticker on something) that signals your terfiness?

I was thinking of making something in suffragette colours to wear or use but just looking for ideas.

I doubt many people here consider themselves terfs, especially as it's a slur.

Edited

Women have reclaimed it, just as some gay men have reclaimed the word queer.

TERF - Tired of Explaining Reality to Fools 😉

Grammarnut · 24/03/2025 14:00

I think we are on the same side, but I am not sure I get you here.

The very word feminist by definition excludes transwoman.

The acronym "TERF" isn't accurate at describing anything, and is unnecessary as I personally include transmen in feminism because they are women. The only people excluded are males.

The slur doesn't describe being Gender critical.

I'm also not "big" on taking sides, but I do think we broadly agree here.

MarieDeGournay · 24/03/2025 15:31

I'm nailing my colours* to the fence on this one:
I accept that TERF is a slur, and that women have fought to get it recognised as such.
But I also recognise that it is benign when used between women in fora like this.
So it is, and it isn't, depending - Schrödinger's slur??

frenchnoodle · 24/03/2025 08:15

I would say most are gender critical, but not terfs.

As most people are not trans exclusionary are we. We just want sex exemptions upheld.

It depends what you mean by ‘trans exclusionary’ because I do want to exclude TIM’s from women’s single sex spaces, because they’re men.

The word Feminist covers that.

I have some antique suffrage jewellery. I’ve been asked by some younger friends not to wear it.

I hope you told them to shove off?!How can they object to that?

TwoLoonsAndASprout · 24/03/2025 10:17

Also! Do you think we could persuade The Famous Artist Birdy Rose to make some of her designs as enamel badges? Because i’m not quite ready for T-shirt level attention, but her artwork would look fab as a pin on a lapel or a bag…

thefamousartistbirdyrose.com/collections/gargoyles-of-beelzebub

I have several of her t-shirts, my favourite being the female weight lifter saying ‘no thank you’, and I have noticed people looking at them but no one has ever said anything. I would happily tell anyone their origin if asked.

Looking forward to spotting you in the crowd in Oxford, HappySheldon😄

I'm going too, can't wait.

No, it really doesn’t, there are plenty of women who call themselves feminists whilst spouting the TWAW nonsense, and even some who think TIM’s can, and should be included as feminists.

So what you are doing by using TERF is mangling language and giving in to those who don't believe in biology.

I don't use cis for the same reason.

I have this scarf. I wear it most days throughout the winter.
It was bought for me by my lovely MiL & I adore it!

I have that one too, it’s lovely. I don’t think many people realise what it stands for though.

Bumpitybumpbumplook · 24/03/2025 16:07

thank you for bringing this purple, white & green now being too political!!

https://www.holyrood.com/editors-column/view,how-skewed-is-the-debate-on-sex-and-gender-that-wearing-suffragette-colours-is-seen-as-provocative

I think I’m going to start to wear these colors quite innocently …. And I do love the colored stones of purple and green together in jewelry. Funny they will be “dog whistles” that I will happily wear.

How skewed is the debate on sex and gender that wearing suffragette colours is seen as provocative?

The removal of a woman wearing suffragette colours was a shameful day for the Scottish Parliament

How about you do you, and let me do me. I’m really too old to be lectured like a small child. You’ll be telling me next I’m not doing my womaning properly, and there are TRA’s for that.

I haven’t actually said I use the word to describe myself either.

🤷 I haven't told you to do anything.

Clearly there is a mismatch somewhere.

I'm trying to work out where feminism has lost its meaning to the point where really intellegent women are having to use a slur to describe how they feel?

That may not be you, it may be.

But I find it interesting that something which a few years ago was a big turning point is now used self descriptive usage.

It doesn't even accurately describe being Gender critical.
Have we regressed to a point where feminism is assumed to include men, so need TRA created descriptiors tacked on?

It's bizarre.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 24/03/2025 16:20

On Saturday at ParkRun I did admire a woman’s necklace in suffragette colours and ask about it.
I like to think I did so with a knowing glint in my eye!

You told me I’m ‘mangling language’ and ‘giving in to people who don’t believe in biology’.

I couldn’t be clearer in the language I use on this subject, I have never subscribed to the ‘be kind’ mantra, but I do believe that there is sometimes a powerful point to be made by taking a word previously used as a slur and a weapon, and turning the meaning on its head, and therefore reducing its power and capacity to hurt and intimidate. @MarieDeGournay has already posted on this point far more eloquently than I could.

I don’t know if you mean to come across as bullish but you do.

I don't mean to, it can be difficult from time to time as English isn't a first language, this isn't the first time this has happened, So I apologise for that, I think the emotive subject comes across as even more direct that I generally intend to be. Over description on parts and too direct on others.

I'm fluent in English but there is clearly something in how I'm wording things that causes short responses.

BritBratGrot · 24/03/2025 16:28

I've got a rather wonderful scarf knitted by my 10 year old daughter, her own design using white, purple and green wool. I've posted a picture previously under an old username.
It's both beautiful and beyond reproach as my daughter learnt about the suffragettes at school and the story goes she chose to make me the scarf spontaneously.
In actual fact once I knew she'd learnt about the suffragettes i pestered her to knit me a scarf for GI display purposes.

Isn't it something that I feel safer in public hiding behind the kind actions of a child than owning my own feminist credentials?

HappySheldon · 24/03/2025 16:41

It really does say something @BritBratGrot

I said before under another user name- my older DS (aged 14) spied Dino jewellery being worn by a teacher of his. He asked 'Oh! Are you a Terfosauraus too, Miss? My mum is!'. Apparently the teacher just laughed and gave him a wink.

I've not yet met her other than the usual parent-teacher e-mail comms you sometimes have to have. But I rather like the sound of her. (Miss H if you are on here- hello!)

I am SO looking forward to HJ's Oxford talk. I believe it sold out within mere days which also says something!

JulesJules · 24/03/2025 16:42

I have that Ministry of Tartan scarf in suffragette tartan, a present from my sister. A little purple badge on my bag commemorating 100 years since women got the vote (ironically it's a Fawcett society one) and a badge of a dinosaur in a cup of tea in green, white and violet.

Peregrina · 24/03/2025 16:43

I am SO looking forward to HJ's Oxford talk.

Bother. I am near Oxford and was going to ask where I could get a ticket.

But I like the idea of the suffragette scarf. Just pondering whether to splash out and order a suffragette kilt - but I don't usually wear green.

HappySheldon · 24/03/2025 16:44

It's at the Oxford Literary festival @Peregrina . Always worth enquiring in case some have become available for whatever reason!

Thank you for being refreshingly honest and I completely understand that sometimes things get lost in translation!

I think broadly we are in the same ballpark so we should probably celebrate our solidarity rather than nit pick the finer points.

Please don’t take this as condescending in any way but your English is excellent 😊

A bloody good reason to wear it all the time, I'd have said.

I do wear it a lot. But it makes life very difficult for my adult dd so I don’t wear it around her.
