Wonderfulequipment · 20/03/2025 12:22

I've just complained to the BBC about the lack of coverage on their website - anyone want to join me?

Shelagh Fogarty is covering this from 1pm on LBC.
She's posted on Twitter
Hearing BBC reports on the conflation of sex and gender in NHS healthcare is like an out of body experience. Do they ever read their own website? More

Goldshelfie · 20/03/2025 13:12

It was just on the BBC news channel, about 12.45. I missed the lunchtime news so not sure if it was on there. This is great to see though, mainstreaming the things we’ve all been trying to get someone in power to take seriously!

Wonderfulequipment · 20/03/2025 13:59

Projectme · 20/03/2025 12:31

it is on the bbc news site...just not a headline...what a surprise

Public data should not conflate sex and gender, review says - BBC News

It is in the headline bit now (finally) - says it went up 2 hours ago so around the time I was writing my complaint. What took them so long I wonder Hmm

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/03/2025 14:08

Shelagh Fogarty on LBC talking about this now. Sets out very clearly her view (sex realist). She's talking to Maya Forstater now and wants to hear from us how easy/difficult it is to push back

The end of that BBC article amused me:

Prime Minister Keir Starmer's spokesperson said civil servants were taking action to make sure the right guidance is in place.
"There's obviously circumstances for recognising people's gender, but the importance of biological sex, when it comes to, for example, healthcare, is common sense," he added.

A Reverse Ferret of epic proportions.

theDudesmummy · 20/03/2025 14:46

The Keir Starmer who said that it was "not right" to say that a woman can't have a penis? That one? And his friend Lammy who believes in magical male cervixes? Hmmm.

Trying to decide how to spin it, and seeing if there was there a suitable drag queen available for comment.

Grammarnut · 21/03/2025 23:04

Reading between the lines the government means to do nothing about it.
“We are grateful to Professor Sullivan for her work, which has been shared with relevant government departments and public organisations, including the ONS.”
Government speak for 'we note the research and don't think it matters so we are not going to do anything'.

I knew I recognised her name!

This actually made me laugh

Or think of the census question: if you trusted those results, you’d believe that the most urgent need of trans people in England and Wales was remedial English classes.

fabricstash · 22/03/2025 10:08

I don’t think the government can ignore it completely. The way the nhs operates they would be wide open to future law suits if they ignore it. The same is true for some other areas too. It will enable more people to ask honestly « do you mean sex or gender? »

“a queer data approach to contemporary data practices”

Well that has to be a contender for Wank of the Week. What on earth does that serve beyond self indulgent pleasure to the composer of that appalling sentence?

I appreciate it's rhetorical, but sadly I think you might have answered your own question in the way you described the quote.

As is becoming increasingly obvious to the public (I think), also sadly some people really do get off on getting this type of stuff into public policy.... 🤮 and "coincidentally" seem to find themselves in roles where they can achieve that.

TheOtherRaven · 22/03/2025 11:35

Wholly agree.

'Queered data' is going to be by definition, pointless.

Like 'trans female' meaning literally 'male female', it just enters the realm of failure of any shared meaning or purpose, and a lot of personal indulgence.

theilltemperedqueenofspacetime · 23/03/2025 08:30

From The Observer

The idea that the reality of people’s biological sex is immaterial in society, and that it can be replaced by the concept of gender identity – whether someone feels male or female – is a highly contested belief system that does not reflect British equalities law. Yet in recent years, it has come to dominate sections of the public sphere spanning institutions as diverse as the NHS, the police and universities, as activists have sought to impose this personal belief on everyone.
The extent to which leaders in those institutions have caved in to activist pressures has led to real-world detriment......

Well, praise be!

borntobequiet · 23/03/2025 09:16

Yet it seems to have sunk without trace on the BBC.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/03/2025 09:17

That's refreshing to read - I know it's the Observer not the sad old delusional Guardian but still positive to read accurate informed journalism from them

BonfireLady · 23/03/2025 09:29

Well, well.

Brilliant stuff. The Observer has been great previously but this is the type of clarity that could lead to a tipping point, where people step of the fence of "it's complicated, I just want to support a marginalised minority" and start actually listening to and understanding the harmful impacts of this enforced belief in gender identity.

BonfireLady · 23/03/2025 09:30

Thankfully it's often the same readership.
It'll pique some interest... and possibly some peaking.

borntobequiet · 23/03/2025 09:16

Yet it seems to have sunk without trace on the BBC.

Surprise, surprise.

Perhaps they'll achieve "balance" by finding a drag queen to comment on it all, with a solemn tone and explanation about how the real story here is the persecution of a marginalised minority.
