This is also excellent as an observation.

“There are things that statistics cannot do. Statistics are not a means of personal self-expression. They can neither validate nor invalidate individual identities, and they cannot see into people’s souls.”

Can’t be stated enough

FinallyASunnyDay · 19/03/2025 19:31

So pleased this has finally been published. Haven't yet read the full review, but very pleased to read:

It is understood that the review has been circulated to all government departments by Peter Kyle, the technology secretary, with an acknowledgment that accurate data collection is essential. (From the Times article.)

Hope it makes a difference. I do have hopes of Wes actually acting to make the change to bio sex recording happen in healthcare at least.

FinallyASunnyDay · 19/03/2025 19:35

Oh oh oh

From the review
For clarity, the term ‘sex’ when used in this report without any qualifier simply means sex, in other words biological sex, which can also be termed natal sex or sex at birth.

Clarity! No 'sex assigned at birth'! This alone makes me happy.

Yes. I'm quietly hoping that Streeting - a gay man who's seen the attempts to obliterate same sex attraction in favour of gender woowoo - will have the confidence and understanding to cut off the funding that's been enabled the toxic luxury belief doing so much harm to society and is frankly breaking the NHS.

FinallyASunnyDay · 19/03/2025 19:47

Oh my word. Worth reading the recommendations in the report. They pull no punches. What an amazing, forthright piece of work that I genuinely think will Change Things.

Huge congratulations to Prof Sullivan.

Alice Sullivan is very much of the sex realist frame of mind.

Now this is aTweet!

Data on sex is vital across a range of domains, including health, criminal justice, education and employment. In recent years, confusion over the concepts of sex, gender and gender identity has led to a loss of robust data on sex

Biological sex erased from official data on health, crime and education
Wonderfulequipment · 19/03/2025 22:38

This is so refreshing. My DH has been very much of the #bekind mindset but has been gradually peaking. He is very keen on stats and I think this may have made the last scales fall from his eyes so 🙏🏼 Dr Sullivan.

The Telegraph article has been updated

https://archive.ph/4TVLZ

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/03/19/police-and-nhs-must-record-biological-sex/

To the surprise of no-one Labour are refusing to commit to implementing the recommendations. Make life harder for people with disabilities? Have at it! Consider making people who claim to be trans possibly a little sad?

the Government would not commit to implementing the recommendations, saying merely that the report would be sent to departments to be considered alongside the views of “other interested parties”.

And this bit's new

It found that guidance notes for officers on the computer system state that it is “quite possible” that an arrested person who has acquired a GRC without informing the police “could be released or otherwise dealt with before any link to their previous offending history is known (through confirmation by fingerprints)”.
“This is also likely to be true of those who self-declare a different sex and name,” the guidance states.

Something that has been talked about previously on these boards.

Igneococcus · 20/03/2025 07:13

The report was just now mentioned in the news bulletin on BBC Radio 3, so the BBC is aware of it.

OP posts:

Alice Sullivan is on R4 Today, starting c. 7.45am.

theDudesmummy · 20/03/2025 07:55

"Sex at birth" has two unneeded words. Just "sex" will do. You are the same sex before birth, at birth and after birth. No need to qualify.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 20/03/2025 07:55

I started a new thread as I hadn’t seen this one.

The item in Radio 4 today was very good. ‘Statistics are not a place for self expression.’

Just posted this on another thread. And now again at 8am.

JustSpeculation · 20/03/2025 08:09

Yes, a very clear reporting on R4 today programme just now. No prevarication or "other views are available" pussyfooting. How nice.

WorriedMutha · 20/03/2025 08:11

I missed the 7.45 interview but heard it covered in the 8am headlines. As this subject seldom hits the mainstream, I'm hoping some R4 listeners are having a wtf moment this morning.
I had a serious wtf moment about the trans baby? Why the fuck didn't that raise a safeguarding red flag. Seriously?

Longlivethebling · 20/03/2025 08:14

Sky news explicitly clear on this, this morning. Not sure I have ever hear such simple and clear language on a news channel before.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 20/03/2025 08:18

It was also discussed on GMB this morning with the even the tedious Ayesha Hazarika forced to agree that this shouldn't be happening.

Presumably the response from our trans captured government is crickets?

Fenlandia · 20/03/2025 08:18

I caught the end of Alice's interview with (I think?) Justin Webb. She is so clear I just have to hope ordinary listeners could find no fault in her work. Of course statistics aren't a vehicle for self-expression, they capture data about categories in order to understand the world!

Yeeesss! I just watched that too and made a reasonably energetic fistpump, given that it was only just after 8 in the morning😄

It was all there, wasn't it? Skewed crime figures as men commit most crime, 'gender pay gap' is really a 'sex pay gap', government response is blah blah blah and will pass on to relevant bodies..

And the reporter was so matter-of-fact and categorical about it, as if she had sprung fully-formed from the mind of FWR and thought it was all so obvious😁

Nice start to the day, along with bright sunshine this morning where I amSmile

Kucinghitam · 20/03/2025 08:20

I'm assuming TRSOH will be in "I see no ships" mode.

Thank for that post @WorriedMutha . I went back and listened to the interview as I had missed it, too, and only caught the news item at 8. Alice Sullivan was very clear, and made strong, supported and explained points. It's so good to hear someone allowed to develop an argument without being subjected to continual aggressive interruptions.

StanfreyPock · 20/03/2025 08:23

Great positive discussion on R4, yessss!

TheOtherRaven · 20/03/2025 08:28

They're leaving the general public with only two places to go really:

  1. This is more of their two tiering where there are special people who matter in society and others (disabled people, the elderly, children with SEND (that bomb is due any minute) don't, and their sadness and feelings and dignity and respect isn't a Thing

  2. There's a whole hearted political and/or misogynistic commitment to these policies as helpful to the govt's agenda, which is being badly disguised under a rug of pomo burble.

Either way, it would appear that equality is one of those destroyed words that Labour is no longer into. Like 'women'.

borntobequiet · 20/03/2025 08:30

We’re so close to someone clarifying what this means for the DBS if people can disavow their previous name and actual sex. But it’s painfully slow.
