Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

People don't celebrate pride by cutting up pride flags and dropping crumpled up parts of it next to their feet while proudly posing. This could also be seen as inciting hate against LGBT IMO people and like I said, it's no wonder the students walked out on her.

I don't think anyone is shocked that you're not in favour of sex based rights, Chris, don't worry.

😂You'll pull a muscle, reaching like that. Might I suggest a brisk jog around the block or some star jumps instead?

You realise this wasn't a celebrate pride event, right?

Christinapple · 17/02/2025 23:58

Is it worth pointing out the rainbow stripes of the pride flag already represent the LGBT community as a whole including trans people+rights, and in addition to trans people specifically referenced by the chevrons their colours also represent LGBT people of colour and lives lost to HIV/AIDs?

"The woman who chopped the chevrons out is a lesbian."

Is she the spokesperson for the British LGBT community? According to a tweet (correct me if I'm wrong) the photo was taken at a gender critical event in Brighton, if so would she also do this stunt at an LGBT pride event or gay bar? Why not?

Would the gay and lesbian students at the Uni Helen spoke at praise or approve of that photo? Did Helen show them her pic and ask them? Why not?

I know it isn't completely black and white, but it appears to me that defacing any of the flags is a gender critical thing and not a gay or bi thing. I recall JK Rowling (hetero I believe) doing something similar when she either liked or retweeted an image of the pride flag with the words "get this shit off it" or something to that effect?

Yes, exactly.

Hermyknee · 18/02/2025 00:33

When we happened upon a Pride parade, we got squirted with a white sticky gloop that was being pumped out of a 10ft penis effigy. Several men on the float were rotating and aiming it like a canon. They were having a great time. We had to stop shopping, go home and wash our hair and clothes. It was really annoying and disrupted our day.

I was expecting to see much worse when I clicked on the sensitive picture 😅

Hermyknee · 18/02/2025 01:20

Why was that photo marked sensitive content?!?

Datun · 18/02/2025 06:57

I love the thing that Helen was most annoyed about was that she was reported as being speechless 😁

I can't imagine a situation where that would ever happen! It's one of the reasons why she's so good. She's never lost for words, and can think on her feet like a bloody ninja

DeanElderberry · 18/02/2025 15:01

Look at this @Christinapple and work out what it means. As you say, the rainbow already included everyone. Why did some people reject the rainbow and demand the chevron? Who did they want to push out of being included and respected?

LGB ✂T

Greyskybluesky · 19/02/2025 09:20

I'm copying this link over from @LadyBracknellsHandbagg 's thread
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5277415-is-sanity-finally-being-restored-at-uk-universities

It's Helen Joyce's account of what happened. Clear and with a dash of humour, as always

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 19/02/2025 09:25

They wouldn’t know a fascist if they fell over one!

There's a photo of Helen Joyce and a friend defacing a pride flag and stomping on it. No wonder the students walked out.

I’m sure you have a link to this, please do let us have it.

Any chance of a credible source for that claim?

I think we all know the answer to that question.

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 19/02/2025 09:30

Christinapple · 17/02/2025 17:53

Here you go. It's made the rounds on social media I thought you might already have been aware of it.

She’s holding one end of a flag and isn’t stomping on anything, there’s no evidence that she defaced or cut up anything, but then facts are a bit abstract to you aren’t they?

MarieDeGournay · 19/02/2025 09:40

The restored rainbow flag in the photo was LGB ✂T in actionSmile
But it's clear that Helen Joyce didn't do it, and nobody stomped on anything.
As if facts matter🙄

Barbadossunset · 19/02/2025 09:53

Also, in my experience, a lot of female students seem to be looking for a 'cause' and 'trans rights' fits the bill nowadays. Yes, on message and willing to be disrupters.

Yes , I agree with this. I wonder what the next cause will be.

DeanElderberry · 19/02/2025 10:37

Luxury life for them, at that stage I was either in lectures/the library/on field trips OR working to pay my way. No time to be a political activist for good or ill. One 'weekend off' in three. And yet I emerged from it all debt-free. Charging huge student fees was a disastrous course of action for the UK, and now most of the universities are going to cease trading. Shocking stuff.

anyolddinosaur · 19/02/2025 11:19

Orwell feared that totalitarianism could easily take over the U.S. and Britain and wrote 1984 as a cautionary tale. He'd see the trans activists as similar to the fascists. One day Chris you'll realise that you are an oppressor living in the age of doubelthink and seeing 1984 as your manual.

WTAF?!!

That’s the kind of thing that would incite hatred, not cutting out a bit of a flag.

Some men aren’t happy until they’ve made it all about them, and forcibly so. Nasty behaviour.

I debated whether to post my experience but I did so because it was so laughable that @Christinapple thought a picture of a flag with a bit cut out was deemed so bad it had to have ‘sensitive content’ on it. Compared to the photo I took of that float riding through the city in front of thousands of people, including families with children. I was more concerned whatever it was would get in my eyes than thinking about how inappropriate it was at the time to be honest.

TimeForATerf · 19/02/2025 17:29

The TRA just hate Helen don’t they @Christinapple because they cannot, ever, intelligently debate anything with her.

I’m sure I read before the attendance at Oxford that she invited students of all opinions and beliefs to come and debate with her. Looks like the blue haired brigade, despite their privilege and “intelligence” hadn’t got the balls to do it….or know she speaks the truth.

Greyskybluesky · 19/02/2025 17:43

You are absolutely right @TimeForATerf. Here is what John Maier said (he organised the event):

In a spirit more of hope than expectation, Helen and I publicly urged her opponents at the university to turn up on Thursday and, against habit, present their own arguments, as is the disciplinary norm in philosophy and academia more generally.

They have no rational arguments and no stamina for a discussion.

Yep. That was when the rot really started to set in for UKHE. A lot of us said so at the time. That the wheels would come off was inevitable, but I doubt whether anyone could have predicted the speed or spectacular fashion with which this would happen. It's taken less than two decades.

The humanities are dead in the water. No jobs advertised, faculties all over the country haemhorraging staff to VS, and what few PhD graduates there are left are going straight into industry. Very few are getting in at the ECR end but the ones universities are employing on the cheap to replace the professors, readers and senior lecturers who've jumped ship, having long had enough of the whole shebang. Most people who are old enough to retire (and quite a few who are not) have got out while the going's good and they still have a pension left.

As recently as 25 years ago the UK still had a world-class higher education system. Where any economy is heading to without a functioning HE system - quite aside from the shitshow left behind by Brexit and the pandemic - is yet to be seen, but it's a guarantee that it won't be anywhere good.

It's nothing short of tragic.

DeanElderberry · 19/02/2025 20:02

It's heartbreaking, and disastrous for the country long-term. Managerialism let run mad to destroy all it touches.

Barbadossunset · 19/02/2025 20:30

Please, what does VS mean? (I googled it and it came up as an abbreviation for ‘versus’.
