I had thought that being quiet rather than providing a robust opposition was a tactic. By saying nothing they allowed the Tories to dig their own hole. It also meant that without a common enemy different wings of the Conservatives fought each other.
I thought it was a pity. The role of a good opposition party is to test Government policies. It allows potential legislation to be tested, and we are all better off for that. Labour would then have come into fully fit and ready to govern.
It now appears that the silence was by default. They had huge divisions within the party and a lack of the sort of talent that is capable of both listening and learning. This is what we are seeing now.
So the Tories are unpopular as are Labour. Who will fill the gap......
