Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Labour haven't shelved plans for self ID, they are going to allow it by re-jigging everything else. That's why we now have MP's openly making statements like this.

Giggorata · 12/02/2025 12:04

New Health secretary can do one.
As can all of the Labour government.
What a disappointment they all are.

duc748 · 12/02/2025 12:08

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 12/02/2025 11:28

Yeah, same.

This time last year when I said I couldn't vote for a party that pretends not to know what a woman is, people were telling me that the most important priority was to sort the country out after 14 years of Tory misrule.

I said I understood that, but I couldn't see any indication that Labour were capable of sorting the country out. I do feel vindicated now.

Same here. Labour, (and my MP in particular 😡) didn't seem to know what a woman is, so I refused them my vote. But I did see that Labour had been dealt a shit hand, and the state of the UK would have been a challenge for any incoming administration. So I kinda wished them well. But, avoidable errors like the WFP, and the recurring feeling that Labour just can't, well, be trusted, mean I'm not sorry not to have voted for them. The country deserves better than this.

Cerah · 12/02/2025 12:10

This is just awful. I know there are people who argue that we can just have separate cubicles but I went to a bar which was like that and it was absolutely horrendous. This was a weekend night so the bar was rammed. When I opened the door to the loos most of the cubicles had men in them, and I know this because they left the bloody doors open while they were using said cubicles. One guy turned round as I was walking in with his dick still out. Piss and sick all over the loos, all toilets completely unusable even if you hovered because the floor and walls were soaked in urine.

I know even the women's loos can be bad when there's alcohol involved but this was another level of disgusting. I haven't even mentioned the safety aspect of being around hammered men with their dicks out. Safe to say we left and I'm never going back there again.

duc748 · 12/02/2025 12:13

Pubs like that should hammered on TripAdvisor and sites like that. Pub-goers don't want these toilets, women most certainly don't.

The sad truth is that if Labour were any good they'd have been elected to power sooner. The only reason they are in power now is because people were completely desperate after 14 years of Tory chaos.

That's disgusting. Did you email and complain afterwards?

No. I think I will do though as this didn't happen very long ago. They probably will try to explain that they do have separate loos as the cubicles were labelled women or men but the blokes were ignoring the signs and using them as a free for all. Makes far more sense to have separate rooms.

Needspaceforlego · 12/02/2025 13:11

That's grim!

Least with pubs you can vote with your feet.
It's schools that's worrying. Kids can't exactly vote with their feet.

I heard someone on the radio this morning going on about a secondary that converted to unisex loos and ended up converting them back - nobody liked them.

I'm praying for Sandie Peggie, her name could easily go down in history.

Keeptoiletssafe · 12/02/2025 13:13

When I have managed to speak to people who had input into document T one of the comments was ‘well if had been up to me there would be attendants on each set of toilets’.
That is how far removed the people, who are making the design decisions, are from real life.

MrsPeregrine · 12/02/2025 13:20

This is absolutely disgusting. I’ve unfortunately had to stay in hospital a couple of times and because of the reasons I was there, I was really vulnerable. I would not have felt safe using anything other than a woman only toilet. This minister is totally out of touch.

They won’t be in power long. If they carry on as they are they will effectively be handing the vote on a silver platter to Reform at the next election. They’ve already been overtaken by reform in the latest opinion polls. They need to start listening to their electorate or they will end up losing votes.

I would definitely email. It sounds like they need this sort of feedback.

Heggettypeg · 12/02/2025 17:45

I'm all confused now. If Ashley Dalton is Health Minister, then who is "Health Minister Karin Smyth" who just agreed with Rosie Duffield in Parliament that the NHS needs single sex changing rooms (see another recent thread) ?

duc748 · 12/02/2025 17:55

There's a few junior Ministers is every department. AD is 'a' Health Minister, not 'the' Health Minister.

The top dog is the Health Secretary, Wes Streeting - he's a Cabinet Minister not just a Minister.

So collectively the Health Department appear to be saying that we do need single sex changing rooms but we don't need single sex toilets. Hmm.

duc748 · 12/02/2025 21:12

Well, I suppose, unless or until she gets slapped down by someone more senior. I'd imagine Streeting would be pressed on this, if he hasn't already been.

I had thought that being quiet rather than providing a robust opposition was a tactic. By saying nothing they allowed the Tories to dig their own hole. It also meant that without a common enemy different wings of the Conservatives fought each other.

I thought it was a pity. The role of a good opposition party is to test Government policies. It allows potential legislation to be tested, and we are all better off for that. Labour would then have come into fully fit and ready to govern.

It now appears that the silence was by default. They had huge divisions within the party and a lack of the sort of talent that is capable of both listening and learning. This is what we are seeing now.

So the Tories are unpopular as are Labour. Who will fill the gap......

She’s not a minister though I thought for a minute Wes Streeting had been replaced.

She sounds like an idiot.

She's not the Secretary of State. She is a minister, God help us.

I bet they'll never be.... A bit of loo based NIMBYism. 🙄

Last time I set foot in the place (Dec 24 reception on AI and the media) they were all male and female (I checked out two sets).

Might have to cross your legs as well. Bet she has not.

That's very kind of you CrystalSingerFan!

I confess I had to google the words - and I was a bit puzzled because the first line was Oh Madonna, not Oh Marie - mistaken identity or wha? - but then the Oh Marie appeared and all was revealed. Nice to know I have my own aria thank youSmile

The Tom Lehrer video wouldn't play but it doesn't matter, I have lots of TL imprinted in my memory.

Total random anecdote. I once heard of a primary school teacher who thought Don Giovanni might be suitable for 8-year-olds. Not staged, it wasn't.
Music is wonderful - I know it's 'Cassonova'.

Might be wishful thinking, but it was one thing saying we don't need single sex toilets in 2016, and another now.

I don't think you will be able to stop businesses installing gender neutral fully enclosed sinks and toilets - the market will decide what they want.

However, they take up a lot more space than cubicles and urinals, and suggesting those should be mixed sex is not a vote winner. Reform and the Conservatives would have a field day.

What happens is the mens stay the mens
And the womens become open.

I think that 1 thing C19 did was teach adults men what it is like to have to plan around toilet access /breaks
