would you say mumsnet these days is a safe space for a non-transphobic lesbian with children to hang out?

I've lived in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset and never heard "That's the badger".

Lived in yes, but @JanesLittleGirl and I are born and raised. We are locals. You know when you walk into the pub and they stop talking? That’s because they were talking about badgers.

Maybe,

But I moved to Cornwall in 1983 so I should have heard it by now <sulks>

Ah. Perhaps it’s just Dorset.

RumNotRun · 05/02/2025 22:14

@ArabellaScott I'm sure I originally saw this on MN somewhere, but, as you have watched spiders shagging, welcome to the world of slug sex.

Cornwall born and bred, never heard it either

One of my all time favourite videos! 😆

I was chatting to a colleague about slug sex, as you do. We were speculating if they'd make good tree decorations. In the end we decided that a slug is for life, not just for Christmas.

I used to feed the slugs at night with soaked cat kibble and then pour some water on the ground for them. They've all left though since i got rid of the wooden shed they were living under. They are fascinating to watch. If not a little slimy.

Magpiecomplex · 05/02/2025 22:31

Oh, I would have bought the giant slug ring but it's sold out. What a shame! (Seriously though, how much!!!!)

Boiledbeetle · 05/02/2025 22:38

@ArabellaScott I've been here too long when I know you love the slug video!

ArabellaScott · 05/02/2025 22:39

And I've been indiscreet about slug video preferences, it seems. Aston'll have me on a list.

lcakethereforeIam · 05/02/2025 22:40

It's a slippery slope.

Well yes....
The first book my dd chose to bring home when she was in reception (for me to read to her) was 'the life cycle of the snail'..yay, hermaphrodite sex! I should have been grateful it wasn't slugs, though they had leopard slugs performing on SpringWatch at some point after that.

I am'pt saying anything about what other people say. I'm just saying what we say.

MyrtleLion · 05/02/2025 23:02

I never realised how bloody big they are!

The UK's largest land predator. I was staying in a very posh bit of south London a few years ago and one came out of a hedge in a neighbouring garden and ran into a nearby park. Bloody fast bugger it was.

Did it have anything in it about love darts? There's a lot to criticise about furries but slimies would be far, far worse <shudder>

If there's such a thing as a slimey I don't want to hear it.

How to pronounce diplodocus

BBC Blogs

Edited

In theory I favour the NHM one that's closest to the etymology, although I grew up with DiploDOHkus so tend to revert to that if I don't dont think about it.

David Attenborough favours the PLOD version, and it's one of the vanishingly small number of things I disagree with him about. (The other main one is algae.)

lcakethereforeIam · 05/02/2025 23:12

Lichen? Like-en or Litch-en.

We're going to miss him when he's gone.

Do you think he should have the massive procession through the streets of London with all the soldiers and the horses and the gun carriage and the funeral in Westminster Abbey?

ErrolTheDragon · 05/02/2025 23:13

The only live badger I've ever seen was a young one, calmly sunbathing in an enclosure at the Caerlaverock Wetlands and Wildlife Trust reserve.

Like-en.

I will brook no discussion.

Oh, sorry, for a moment, I thought I was in Pedants' Corner.
