Vigil for Afghan Women & Girls disrupted by abuse-hurling from a city councillor

So there we were on Saturday, holding a silent vigil in the centre of Norwich in solidarity with Afghan women & girls - a group of us including Jewish & Muslim women and a baby in a pushchair.

And we got a torrent of abuse from… no, not actually the Taliban, but an elected City Councillor, a trans-identified woman, shouting that we were Nazis & “transphobes” (she knows some of us to be Jewish).

Not that the vigil, which lasted all of 30 minutes, was anything about “trans”.

Except in the terms of that meme “It’s transphobic! What was the question?”

This is an absolute disgrace and I'm sorry you had to put up with that when you are out doing a good thing. I assume you are complaining?

AgnesX · 04/02/2025 17:33

That's appalling. I've no idea who you can complain to however - or what the solution to this kind of behaviour.

They should be ashamed of themselves.

Yes. I’ve reported to the city council.

in fact she was (politely) approached by one of us who asked why on earth she’d try & disrupt a peaceful silent vigil for women’s rights, & replied “report me!”.

i hope we all do! (The woman she targeted by name I hope will also report to police, as it’s not the first time).

There doesn’t seem much of a system to complain to the party she represents though, if you’re not a member.

And of course she was from the bloody Green Party. That behaviour was disgraceful.

cariadlet · 04/02/2025 17:38

Glinner tweeted a link to complain to the council.

The councillor is called Charlie Caine.
According to a pro-TRA account on Twitter, in the past, she's also joined counter-protests against anti-DQSH protests.

IwantToRetire · 04/02/2025 17:42

When I first saw the OP I was so taken aback I couldn't think what to say.

But sadly with the info about being a Green councillor and past activities, have to accept there is no level of inappropriate disrespectful behaviour TRAs will hesitate to go to.

I hope those of you who were there are all okay. And brilliant that so many demonstrations took place - well done to WRN.

I hope you feel able to report this person to the council and the green party and make public their responses.

Also hope some or all of you feel able to report to the police.

And if there are any local papers or local radio send them a story even if it only leads to them asking for a comment from the person concerned.

And if all else fails send the story to the Telegraph or (gasp) the DM.

Their sense of immunity should be make public and challenged.

Why cant the Green Party just focus on being Green.

Greyskybluesky · 04/02/2025 17:45

Thank you and the others for holding that vigil @CarobBean72. I hope you're all OK despite this outrageous verbal attack 💐

CarobBean72 · 04/02/2025 17:50

Thank you!

I’m fine but I. was shocked & disgusted - especially the Nazi references, as I have known people who suffered under fascism.

I’m also a bit worried that this steroid-abusing rage hamster was there because she’d seen one of our posters.

The woman who was abused by name has been harassed & threatened by the same person previously so it’s probably worse for her.

What a way to behave!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 04/02/2025 17:51

That's appalling - but sadly not suprising.
Sadly the inbuilt misogyny of people like this means that no matter what women are meeting about, they have to centre themselves and try to silence women.

Even at a vigil for Afghan women.

Greyskybluesky · 04/02/2025 17:51

Steroid abusing rage hamster! 😂😂😂

What is “anti DQSH”?

yes: it’s Charlie!

There were protests against Drag Queen Story Hour.

Charlie Caine attended a counter protest in support of Drag Queen Story Hour.

TRAs don't care about anything or anyone but themselves. It's such a narcissistic movement.

Mittens67 · 04/02/2025 18:03

TRA’s like this councillor deplore any focus on actual oppression of actual women such as the atrocities faced by women in Afghanistan which continue in plain sight whilst the rest of the male dominated world doesn’t give a fuck and happily play cricket.
They think it detracts attention from the clearly much more important and intolerable pain of their hurty feelings caused by not everybody agreeing to make believe they are women.
We should all know that men’s feelings obviously trump women being excluded from education, work, not being allowed to speak outside their own home, not being allowed to look out a window, having to cover themselves from head to toe and punishments including beatings, rape, and murder for any who disobey.
How very dare you have a women led vigil which does not include several men who claim they are women? Clearly you are an enormous bigot!
The Green party is a joke and a disgrace with their recent focus on men in frocks rather than the climate they supposedly exist to protect. I hope they are proud of their councillor.

Yep. Once again demonstrating their compassion for women around the world.

On a positive note, it's great to see women gathering together in support.

It was very interesting that the first thing she shouted was “transphobes” (the second was “Nazis”!

What a shocking and disturbing thing to happen although not all that surprising. What has he achieved? Who has this outburst helped? It just shows people like this up to be the self obsessed, callous and small minded woman haters that they really are.

PerkingFaintly · 04/02/2025 19:29

Echoing what @IwantToRetire , well done to Women's Rights Network. Thank you for being out there today.

ArabellaScott · 04/02/2025 19:38

I'm so sorry, OP.

As an ex GP member I feel embarrassed and ashamed.

There are good people in the party, I promise. Unfortunately currently being held hostage by very loud and very unhinged TRAs.

FlowchartRequired · 04/02/2025 19:42

Can 'jumped the shark' be used for a political party, because it isn't about the environment now?

DuesToTheDirt · 04/02/2025 20:03

Why the hell would any political party (yes, even the Greens) not be ashamed of their councillor behaving like this, and use some kind of discipline on them?

AlisonDonut · 04/02/2025 20:26

Surely to goodness this would be hate speech?

FumingTRex · 04/02/2025 20:31

Make sure you report to the council as its a breach of the code of conduct for the councillor. Not just the green party.
