The Blue Stockings Society was founded by women emphasising education and mutual cooperation. Men could attend as invited guests, but in this Women's Pub, they are only welcome to peer enviously through the windows.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Stockings_Society

All women welcome!

All tastes catered for.

All food containing calories will not increase waistlines.

All drink containing alcohol will not intoxicate beyond the mildy merry and slightly inhibited stage. Guaranteed no hangovers.

Don't mind the gerbils, hamster, capybaras, quokkas and other assorted rodents. They're all female, all staff and very accommodating...

I saw that one too Errol - is that a small dog or a rodent??
but I picked a different one to say goodnight, y'all. Loathe to leave the fun and games but it's been a long day.
Sleep well, Stockingers.

I’m not sure what the circles/coins are meant to be, but there aren’t many of those.

I'm not sure if you're commenting on me or DSD.

I have ASD as do my siblings and nephew, probably my DF who died some time ago. I need to try and get another diagnosis as the first one in 2013 said it was borderline but I probably wasn't. This was way before they understood that women show it differently. However it's glaringly obvious to DH.

He has been an absolute blessing and my meltdowns have been much reduced since we got together. But I was forced out of my job in the autumn and it's really set me back because it was so unjust. And it's been difficult finding a new job, hence me freelancing by testing AI models.

DSD was brain damaged at birth because she was a super premie (two brain haemorrhages, one in each hemisphere). She may have ADD or ADHD but isn't autistic. I suspect it's all brain damage.

I had a cousin who had oxygen deprivation at birth - he managed to work and run a small business, but there were big gaps in his ability to know how social interactions worked. I think the 'coins in a jar' thing is a handy way to record mismatches between the ways people function, that they can't help, and that there's no point trying to go into battle over. It works either way - an ASD person I knew started doing for the times the neurotypical world made her feel frustrated or angry - and injustice was a massive trigger - it was for my father too. No-one likes it, but I think some people 'on the spectrum' have an extra strong need for things to be done 'right'.

Anyhow, I started to realise a few years ago that I'm probably ASDH, which explains lots of mismatches between people's expectations and my approach to life. I'm grateful I didn't grow up at a time when they'd have tried to fix me so that they could tick their boxes.

Welcome @fabricstash ! (I have one of those. It's part of my collection of hobby stashes. And nail polish. Lots & lots of nail polish. Must. Not. Buy. More. Nail. Polish. Want. Nail. Polish.)

I am firmly of the opinion that buying craft supplies and actually doing the crafts are two entirely separate hobbies, @ifIwerenotanandroid. I have a yarn stash, a fabric stash (welcome @fabricstash), and the supplies for painting, decoupatch, bookbinding, bag making, and colouring, to name but a few.

MyrtleLion · 07/02/2025 09:32

I have this morning been inspired by the talk of crafts as heralded by @fabricstash. It is so lovely to see you here! And thanks for the inspiration.

So I made a necklace in December that I posted on a previous thread and finally spent 10 minutes this morning finally making the earrings to match and I'll post a pict...

Oh... I've just remembered.

I can't. 😭😭😭😭😭

They are so pretty! And match the necklace!

Oh well, at least you can't see how rubbish my loop making skills are.

Thank you. The injustice has been immense. I've lost a lot of weight through just not eating. It's hard to know what is "normal" frustration that I can't get another job, or what is an autism reaction (often called an overreaction, or cry for attention), so it's difficult to count up.

Oh dear @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius That’s me. I have candle and soap making supplies waiting for that day when I have spare time to do a calming but creative activity. Maybe with some jazz on and the fireplace crackling. You know, once all the actual work is done.

Magpiecomplex · 07/02/2025 09:50

I enjoy soap making but haven't had time to do it in ages. Likewise jewellery and bobbin lace. The only stash I actually manage to use is yarn, because crochet is something I can just pick up and put down easily!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/02/2025 09:53

Is bobbin lace difficult, @Magpiecomplex? Should I buy yet more craft supplies?

I have done candle making in the past - I bought teacups from Ebay, and put candles in them, then sold them at craft fairs. I suspect I made a loss on them, but I enjoyed myself. I've thought about soap making - maybe as presents - yet more craft buying!

Magpiecomplex · 07/02/2025 09:55

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius Bobbin lace isn't very difficult at the level I do it, but I'm not very accomplished! Part of the fun is looking at all the beautiful carved wooden bobbins though, so just buying those is a rewarding hobby!

ErrolTheDragon · 07/02/2025 10:00

I'm not at all crafty... I used to knit when I was a postgrad, 40 years ago. I really should get rid of the half finished brown jumper I started making for my boyfriend...he's been my DH for most of those 40 years now and hasn't worn brown for decades! I did at one point consider trying to turn a sleeve into a dachshund wooly, but probably fortunately I didn't.
Also the scarf I started making when dd was a teen, from spare bits of wool I had...it's far too long. I should get rid and just keep the needles I think.

But with retirement looming maybe I will want to find some creative outlet other than gardening.

CarefulN0w · 07/02/2025 10:09

You are all making me feel slightly guilty about the extensive craft supplies that I have hidden in my home office. If I'm ever knocked down by a bus, I'm not sure what DH will make of my hoard.

The trouble is, my ideas are very different to my abilities and the time I have available.

"Moments when the "Queen of the Night" flower blooms one night a year."

This is amazing, Boily!
I googled it and it's a cactus, called officially called Epiphyllum oxypetalum - but you probably all knew that already😏
I could spend ages trying out lots of music to accompany the blooming of the beautiful blossom.. I wonder would yer actual Queen of the Night aria work?? - but there are things going on elsewhere that I'll be following all day instead..

Thank you, was a botanical treat!.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/02/2025 11:27

You'd have to plan holidays around that plant, it'd be tragic to miss its night of glory! I nearly missed my mini waterlily's one flower this summer (it's in a barrel pond so that's as much as I can expect from it).

I had to correct the "its" four times typing that, bloody 'autocorrect' relentlessly kept shoving in an apostrophe. The other thing it keeps doing recently is completing a sentence with one I've written previously if it happens to start the same way. Please take this as a preemptive apology if I post some random repetition without noticing.

Britinme · 07/02/2025 11:56

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius I hear you on the stash of unused craft supplies. I have a fabric stash, a yarn stash, an embroidery stash and more recently a linocut making stash, all untouched.

MyrtleLion · 07/02/2025 12:01

I have multiple candle making supplies.I went in a course in December. I learned that what I thought was my error in pouring was just how candles are and everyone uses a heat gun to level the tops.

I bought more supplies to make candle melts. I bought more wax. I thought I'd get on with it over Christmas. But no. It's all still packed away 😩

I think dragon fruit have flowers that behave like that and they can be grown from seeds salvaged from the fruit. I think, unlike avocados, they will grow true. I've thought about giving them a go but, they're tender and, unbelievably for a cactus, grow like a vine. I just don't have the room.
