Newly renovated, beautifully appointed. Food and Beverages, excellent (if sometimes unexpected service), delightful clientele, special accommodation for invalids, pedants, readers and normal people.

They both seemed to pull a slight face reminiscent of Charles and Di, imo

I’m coming in and shutting the door to the world and not leaving for four years. Thank god TB isn’t a pub with three tvs blaring 247. It’s all too much out there now.

I think there is a tiny room that I came across somewhere in the subterranean tunnnels that does have a TV blaring 24 hour news. Other than that it was completely empty apart from a bare narrow wooden chair.

The gerbils told me they refuse to go in there, even if they are bribed with Tunnocks teacakes.

Apparently someone asked for it on 6 January 2020 so of course it was provided but, as a passing capybara mentioned tersely under her breath, it didn't have to be comfortable.

AI flatly refused to draw it. Said it didn't have an answer for that.

lcakethereforeIam · 21/01/2025 15:30

I wonder if that's what I heard when I was exploring the lower levels yesterday?

You were conned! That isn't actually the TV room. If you'd hung around a while longer you'd have seen the security gerbil switchover and would have caught a glimpse of what is actually in that room behind the false wall.

@MyrtleLion i can accept a tv in a subterranean basement where none of us need to know of its existence (clever gerbils shunning it).

But I was shocked, I tell you shocked, to hear from @Boiledbeetle that there might be one in the main pub, even just one showing a fire!

Please assure me that the gerbils are expert at maintaining sufficient dried wood of the best sort (birch? Beech? Oak?), starting a fire and keeping it lit at just the right level for each day’s conditions?

MarieDeGournay · 21/01/2025 15:47

I didn't watch any of the events yesterday, but I've seen photos of Melania and The Hat. It probably had edges of sharpened steel in case Himself started getting too enthusiastic😂

I did wonder why I couldn't find it again.🤔

PLANETWATCH!!
"The celestial event, also known as a ‘Planet Parade’ or the ‘great planetary alignment’, will see the sky scattered with a number of visible planets – including Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
Uranus and Neptune will also be visible through a telescope."

From late evening, look south.

edited to change STARWATCH to Planetwatch, the first sounds nicer but I know you lot would never let it pass that they are planets not stars.Grin
Twinkle Twinkle little star
I don't wonder what you are
You're the cooling down of gasses
Into great big solid masses

I had BBC1 on yesterday afternoon while I was doing something else. I had the distinct impression that the Donald went in for a lips-to-lips kiss. Melanie turned her head so the kiss would have landed on her cheek, but her hat touched his forehead.

She near got his other ear with her lethal hat-brim😈

AsWithGlad · 21/01/2025 17:20

I enjoyed this BBC article about some of yesterday’s clothing choices.

Here’s part of it.

It also speaks to her love of hats. The brim is wide enough and the contrast between the cream ribbon and navy hat big enough that it draws the eyes upwards – even if it obscures the eyes of the wearer.
There was a loadedness to its incongruity. As celebrity stylist and fashion expert Lauren Rothman points out, "a boater is traditionally a summer hat. It's traditionally worn by, you know, in Venice, right?" Not in a freezing cold DC.
"This was just such a spectacular use of signalling and blending Palm Beach and DC with international global fashion aesthetic, while understanding the traditional and political power that is also necessary for your look to communicate," she said.

Very few hats were worn yesterday. I heard a discussion, probably on BBC R4’s PM programme. The female commentator said the only other person wearing a hat was Ivanka Trump, and her hat was a (very?) small one. The male commentator said “Ah, a fascinator,” showing his familiarity with female headwear. But I see now that it wasn’t.

That's how you know they are stars because they twinkle. Their light is scattered as it hits the Earth's atmosphere.

Planets are lit by reflected light from the Sun and so don't twinkle.

I live in an area that has very little light pollution, despite being in an urban environment, so if there are no clouds I might see it.

Sometimes though, if i look out of one window, there is a street light blocking the view. If I could be arsed to leave the house I would see the clear sky.

THE FIREWOOD POEM
By Lady Celia Congreve
Published in The Times: March 2nd 1930

These hardwoods burn well and slowly,
Ash, beech, hawthorn oak and holly.
Softwoods flare up quick and fine,
Birch, fir, hazel, larch and pine.
Elm and willow you’ll regret,
Chestnut green and sycamore wet.
Beechwood fires are bright and clear,
If the logs are kept a year.
Chestnut’s only good, they say,
If for long ’tis laid away.
But Ash new or Ash old,
Is fit for a queen with crown of gold.

Birch and fir logs bum too fast,
Blaze up bright and do not last.
It is by the Irish said,
Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread.
Elm wood bums like churchyard mould,
E’en the very flames are cold.
But Ash green or Ash brown,
Is fit for a queen with golden crown.

Poplar gives a bitter smoke,
Fills your eyes and makes you choke.
Apple wood will scent your room,
With an incense like perfume.
Oaken logs if dry and old,
Keep away the winter’s cold.
But Ash wet or Ash dry,
A king shall warm his slippers by.

Oak logs will warm you well,
That are old and dry.
Logs of pine will sweetly smell,
But the sparks will fly.
Birch logs will burn too fast,
Chestnut scarce at all sir.
Hawthorn logs are good to last,
That are cut well in the fall sir
Holly logs will burn like wax,
You could burn them green.
Elm logs burn like smouldering flax,
With no flame to be seen.
Beech logs for winter time,
Yew logs as well sir.
Green elder logs it is a crime,
For any man to sell sir.
Pear logs and apple logs,
They will scent your room.
And cherry logs across the dogs,
They smell like flowers of broom.
But Ash logs smooth and grey,
Buy them green or old, sir.
And buy up all that come your way,
They’re worth their weight in gold sir.

Logs to Burn, Logs to burn, Logs to burn,
Logs to save the coal a turn.
Here’s a word to make you wise,
When you hear the woodman’s cries.
Never heed his usual tale,
That he has good logs for sale.
But read these lines and really learn,
The proper kind of logs to burn.

And an extra line from me

Spindle, don't collect and split
It burns and smells just like dog shit

Magpiecomplex · 21/01/2025 19:06

@lcakethereforeIam Just don't ask AI to illustrate that poem, it won't do a good job! I do like the real world wisdom shining through your additional two lines 🤣

DrBlackbird · 21/01/2025 19:44

Love that v educational poem @lcakethereforeIam Clever gerbils. Ash it is. I’ll ask them to throw another log on the fire.

Boiledbeetle · 21/01/2025 19:49

I've just updated my phone plan. Turns out I haven't since 2012!! What the hell am I supposed to do with an extra 49GB of data?

ErrolTheDragon · 21/01/2025 19:51

I could do with a comfy chair by the fire, feeling a little sore (though not too bad) after today's dental work. What I really want, of course, is a nice cup of tea but advice is no hot drinks for 24 hours.

I think a bath and reading in bed might be a good plan.

Magpiecomplex · 21/01/2025 20:12

I'm sure one of the spa gerbils will run you a nice hot bath @ErrolTheDragon. And magic you up some not-hot hot tea.

Thank you so much for that poem, Cake! I saw a version of it - it's traditional, I think - on a wall in a garden centre in Norfolk years and years ago and have been looking for it ever since. I obviously never got the right combination of words to get a hit on Google.
And now, here it is, out of the blue, for my delight and delectation, without any effort on my part. Thank youSmile
