How many MNers will join me in applying for a GRC??

QueenDoria · 29/12/2024 23:40

having read on another thread that it only costs £5 to apply for a GRC, how many MNers will join me in applying to ‘become’ a man?
one’s legal status as a mother will not change, and I’m sure we’ll all see a 20% uplift in our wages…
We might get turned down if the panel gets an inkling we might be insincere, but, for the sake of a fiver, we could swamp the application process…

I wear jeans and own lots of power tools.
I would also like to walk in the dark without fear. Here's my fiver.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 30/12/2024 10:58

I recently painted my flat on my own, I put all my flat packs together myself and I have my own tools, so that should surely proves I'm a 'man'.

I also have some Christmas money so I'm in for a fiver. 😂

naemates · 30/12/2024 11:06

I've never had a GRC before, does this mean I'm currently genderless? My sex was observed at birth, but no one has assigned me my gender so far 😢

Iheartmysmart · 30/12/2024 11:13

I like drinking pints, love cars, have very short hair and swear on a regular basis. Also like dinosaurs and do all my own decorating and DIY so obviously should be a man. Can I only use my GRC when it suits me though? It won’t be needed when I’m enjoying a ballet or buying a new lipstick.

I love the idea. My cousin is a trans man. It did seem very swift and simple for his previous identity to be erased. It's a bit weird as I'm not allowed to talk about him in memories of childhood because I'd have to refer to him as her and by the 'dead name' (which is actually unisex)

I can't believe it only costs a fiver?
There should be loads of hoops to go through and it should cost loads more. As I'm sure you're going to demonstrate!

Ooooh how will they tell which are fraudulent?

So it will be more difficult for “legitimate” applications to go through as they will have to apply an additional layer of scrutiny in case they are “fraudulent” applications? Sounds like you’ve made it harder for the trans community - how transphobic of you.

And who are you to question the feelings of these people who clearly sound like men to me with their love of power tools and wants to be safe on the street at night. Typical TERF behaviour from Christinapple.

Redshoeblueshoe · 30/12/2024 13:24

I live in trousers
Drink pints of Guinness
Love football
Have short hair
Go to the barbers
Don't wear make-up

Prove I'm not a man Christinapple

This is extremely funny. I can't imagine that many MNers will actually do this as opposed to talk about it, but (if they take the report seriously) the panels will now presumably be applying more than usual scrutiny to applications.

Which is not a bad thing. I wish they took more care in the first place rather than handing out like smarties if the correct boxes are ticked. I mean if we must have the GRA at least have some safeguards.

It's so important to make sure that no-one gets a legal document stating they are something that they are not, because claiming to be something you are not would be fraudulent, wouldn't it?
Thank heavens for Christinapple's Neighbourhood Watch keeping a close eye on That Sort of ThingGrin

Genuine question - I was adopted in the UK so I don’t have a full birth certificate, I have a different doc entitled “ extract from the adopted children’s register “.

This has my name etc and my adoptive parents names, in a similar format to a BC.

I have a short form certificate like everyone else ( just my name, no parents, doesn’t mention adoption ) but it can’t be used for everything .

This means that every time I have to use a “ birth certificate “ to prove my identity ( starting a new job , applying for a passport, DBS, getting married or CP ) I have to disclosed that I’m adopted. Of course, this breaches my confidentiality and sadly we don’t have a special department who deals with our applications unlike other special people who deserve privacy.

Can I apply for a GRC and a get a regular birth certificate ? Or will it disclose that I’m adopted?

How can the fact that I changed gender and name at the age of 40 be worthy of privacy but the fact that I was adopted 39 years ago be something that I have to disclose ?

SirChenjins · 30/12/2024 13:37

Oooh - I’m going to get me one of these! After all, I’ve been a Sir for many years - so you can stick that in your pipe, Chris.

Chris Tin Apple?

PriOn1 · 30/12/2024 13:46

Well, OP, I’ve long maintained that I will get one if self-ID is brought in, but as I would currently have to lie to a doctor, I won’t.

Women campaigning for rights, from the suffragettes onwards have a long history of non-harmful civil disobedience and I feel it would be my duty to demonstrate how open self-ID is to abuse. Indeed, with a Mumsnet campaign, I suspect we could even cause considerable disruption by swamping the process for some time.

And before anyone objects, it should be obvious that good, well thought out laws should not be susceptible to this kind of action. The last such coordinated campaign, I believe, was in response to Margaret Thatcher’s poll tax, which didn’t last very long in the face of widespread refusal to pay.

Chris Tin Apple?

That’s the way I’ve always read it - hollow and rattly, makes a lot of empty noise when a stone gets caught in it. That’s what it reminds me of anyway.

Gosh yes you really should. Can’t have us pesky females getting away with the same thing that many, many unscrupulous men have. How unfair.
