I realise the irony of saying this in the Bluestocking, but I'm fairly sure Errol and I are reasonably sensible scientists, @DeanElderberry! Possibly @DrBlackbird too, I don't know what she's a doctor of...
Mind you, I'm a doctor of plants so I don't discuss cats' colour perception professionally.

Alas I’m one of those social scientists. Thankfully a reasonably sensible one but cannot add to the discussion on animal tetrachromacy. Very happy to sit in a comfy chair with crackling fire in my sight line listening to the scientists.

Guinness is too wholesome a drink to have that effect, surely?

Not according to the (no doubt apocryphal) story about Guinness asking Brendan Behan to write an advertising slogan in return for a nominal fee and some of the company's product. Eventually he came up with "Guinness - it gets you drunk".

ifIwerenotanandroid · 28/12/2024 19:46

Those were the rowdy ones. The older ones were more sedate & had their own bar. Some dressed up on hearing they were going to the Bluestocking.

And don't get me started on the bandicoot bar. I much preferred it when Marie was an historical woman.

I like the straightforward approach. There was a cat food competition once & you had to come up with an advertising slogan. My best one was 'Fills their tum, comes out their bum' which surprisingly didn't win.

And then there's Ade Edmonson's effort for a Cornflakes competition in The Young Ones: "Cornflakes, cornflakes, cornflakes, cornflakes," etc.

As a social scientist you'll probably have a theory about why this happened when I asked the AI for an image of two scientists giving a talk...

Apart from the obvious sexism, wtf is your AI so fond of dark haired, conventionally good looking I suppose, bearded men?

Boiledbeetle · 28/12/2024 20:19

ifIwerenotanandroid · 28/12/2024 19:14

Tell me about it. Boily's lot had one bar, Trixie the toucan's friends flew in & were in another, & there was some sort of moose convention in a third. It was deafening all night long - I could hardly hear myself experiment.

I'll be glad when the holidays are over.

Your photo below was obviously from early on in the evening!

At that point we were still behaving in an orderly fashion!

Hopefully there are no photos from later in the evening when we were behaving in a very disorderly fashion!!

DeanElderberry · 28/12/2024 20:31

Puffers, who are those Stepford creatures gazing raptly at that man thing? And why? And where are the Bluestockings and the gerbils?

I'm pretty sure the capybaras are living it up in the hot spring.

Magpiecomplex · 28/12/2024 20:40

The Guinness toucan is called "Arthur".

Go on Fuzzy, I feel there may be more to this story?

Clearly AI hasn't heard of this:

50 Years of Children Drawing Scientists

When girls don’t see women as scientists, they may not see their future selves as scientists, either—but teachers can make a difference.

DrBlackbird · 28/12/2024 20:46

@ifIwerenotanandroid you probably know that social scientists have theories for everything including the obvious. So we’ll say that Goffman’s theory of dramaturgy can be applied to the gen ai images. Using Gorman, we’ll say that the male scientist is ‘performing’ in order to project a desirable image to his admiring female audience.

Isn’t that so much better than holding our head in despair at how bloody gen ai has been developed largely by sexist white tech bro’s?

Well, I expect it's named after Arthur Guinness, founder. But hey, it's just a factoid!

That's Crash Bandicoot from a video game, isn't it? the bane of a bandicoot's life when googling!
It's like Maltese - I was trying to find out more about the Maltese language [most interesting..] and google kept showing dogs.

Us Maries are very sedate, aren't we? Beetles look like a lot more fun, you wouldn't see a Marie climbing up the shelves to get at the drinks!
It looks like a blue wine is causing some raised eyebrows though...

This is so sad. I'm quite old and I went to an anomaly of a school that concentrated on, and produced scientists. An all girls school.
I feel we might well have drawn women if we'd been asked.

MarieDeGournay · 28/12/2024 21:03

The copy for the toucan ads was written by Dorothy L. Sayers.

I occasionally get asked to draw a scientist at school science fairs when I visit as a governor. The amazement in the eyes of the asker when I say I AM a scientist is sometimes quite depressing.

The blue drink is probably Romulan ale, @MarieDeGournay

Goffman - I remember 'The Moral Career of the Mental Patient', was it? And someone using 'Goffmaniacal' where I would've use Goffmanesque.

Gorman - nope, I got nothing.

But my social science degree was a long time ago & far, far away (nearly in Scotland 😂). I didn't study with anybody famous, but I did meet an ex- & a future Archbishop of Canterbury. Not that that's anything to boast about these days.

The difference between girls and mixed schools in numbers doing physics a level and I'm sure comp sci and various other GCSEs is still marked and shows how much it's nurture not nature.
