As a friend puts it "Men. Can't live with them, can't bash them over the head with a shovel and bury them in the garden".

lcakethereforeIam · 02/12/2024 19:30

When does the voucher expire? I think that's a crucial piece of information. If it is not for a week or so the situation may be salvageable. If it's tomorrow or <gasp> yesterday, then start thinking about lining up your ducks.

I want to know this & will have to casually slip it into a conversation.

I know - fucking frustrating to live with them, but would rather not live without them? Because more often than not they pull a blinder that makes up for the fuckwittery the rest of the time. I have one of those too.

That's a great summing up of marriage, really. And I'm sure he thinks the same about me.

CautiousLurker1 · 02/12/2024 20:03

LOL @ifIwerenotanandroid My DH thinks the same about me too! Met at 22, still together 33 years later, so we both seem to have a forgiving and tolerant nature … and a sense of humour. He’d never pass up the chance of grabbling some extra plonk if we had a £10 off voucher, though, and I’d not even have to suggests it, so I think I chose wisely 🤣

FuzzyPuffling · 02/12/2024 20:12

I have very little idea about vouchers- in this house DH does the shopping.

Wow - you landed a good’un there!

FuzzyPuffling · 02/12/2024 20:14

I did, but on the other hand, he refuses to drive.
Swings and roundabouts!

Bannedontherun · 02/12/2024 20:16

@FuzzyPuffling @CautiousLurker1 My DH does all the shopping too.

I flat out refuse to budget shop and not impulse buy, or go anywhere other than M&S or Waitrose, if there were a Harvey nicks near by i would have threatened to go there.

Works well for me……

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/12/2024 11:30

Dh is red hot at using vouchers - we do the weekly shop online, and the night before it comes, he makes sure that we have got every discount available! And then he puts it all away when it arrives, does the cooking, and clears up the kitchen. All I have to do is to write the week's menu, and make sure we have everything in the order, to make it.

That is my job for this morning, so I am hanging around in the Bluestocking instead, because I have got less than zero inspiration about what to put on next week's menu. It has to be reasonably diabetic-friendly, easy to cook, and something we all like. Argh.

lcakethereforeIam · 03/12/2024 12:05

Daal? I've recently started making this and still getting caught out by the quantities. I think I've made enough for one meal and usually wind up filling the freezer with the leftovers. It's very easy, quick and tasty though.

MarieDeGournay · 03/12/2024 12:09

Good luck with the menu planning, Woley!

There are diabetics in my family, and apart from dessert/puddings, most of what they eat is just plain ordinary good food that everybody else would eat anyway, nothing special. In fact, the rest of the family benefited from the slight adjustments to meals, especially portion size - they noticed the difference between what was a recommended portion, and the heap on their platesSmile

One of the changes I've noticed is the different attitude to carbohydrates, which used to be a bit of a no-no, but the advice these days seems to be they are good for you, in moderation. The diet is a lot less draconian that it used to be - but still a big adjustmentSad

Magpie, I have to ask - did your friend mean you cannot bash your husband over the head with a shovel and bury them in the garden, or you may not bash your husband over the head with a shovel and bury them in the garden?

A bit of weightlifting and some protein shakes would sort out the former, a firm sense of morality the latterGrin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/12/2024 12:16

@MarieDeGournay - you're right about the diet - to be honest, we haven't had to change things a whole lot - though we have switched to brown rice and wholewheat pasta - and dh is learning to give me small portions of the carbs, though he does struggle with this - a portion of potatoes must contain at least three potatoes, in his world! But in fairness, if I eat just one small potato, he will then finish up the rest for me - dustbin guts! The worst thing is he can eat all his dinner, then my leftovers, and a couple of little pots of pudding, and still doesn't put on weight. He does it deliberately, the bastard! 😂

MarieDeGournay · 03/12/2024 12:19

Step away from that garden shovel, Woley!Grin

Magpiecomplex · 03/12/2024 12:23

@MarieDeGournay Definitely the latter. Or possibly even should not. She and I both married men who aren't that much taller than us, so it's physically possible but morally and legally a bad idea. Unless no one ever finds out...

MarieDeGournay · 03/12/2024 13:22

I'd like to say a word about diversity at the Bluestocking, and that word is..
CHINCHILLA!

I think we should invite some to join our extended rodent family.
I googled their behaviour and temperament and found -

  • High IQ
  • Reserved and skittish until comfortable
  • Friendly and outgoing once comfortable
  • Heavy jumpers and climbers
  • Extremely social

..but enough about me!😄

..they are very furry and very tactile and cuddly and when they are happy they jump up and down in a behaviour called 'popcorning' 😊

I think they would make ideal support animals, and the gerbils can focus more on their hospitality duties.

In other words, 'Pleeeese can I have a chincilla pleeeeese pleeeeeese I promise I'll look after it...'😂

Bluestocking: the one where Boiled gets to the bar first!
ErrolTheDragon · 03/12/2024 14:32

They really are lovely looking fluffballs. I'm not sure I've ever handled one but they look like they'd be gorgeous to hold especially if you've got cold hands.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/12/2024 14:35

Is anyone else of an age such that the only socially acceptable colour for school tights (black or navy opaques weirdly not having been invented) was called 'chinchilla'? It was a sort of greyish brown. Definitely not the 'American tan' given by aunties at Xmas.

Bannedontherun · 03/12/2024 14:38

Am i correct that one has to hold a chinchilla a certain way or one can accidentally kill them? I also believe one needs a particular type of rock dust so we will have to decide where to put a pile of this.

I vote for Chinchillas

I've heard that's also true of husbands - for those who don't have access to garden shovels😈

lcakethereforeIam · 03/12/2024 14:42

I introduced pygmy pigs, so who am I to deny a call for chinchilla? They could used the run off areas around the scalectrix track for their dust baths. It'll do double duty.

We have a scalextrik track?! Do we have a Lego room too?
