Oh, are boundaries allowed? In that case, perhaps TW shouldn’t be using stuff/places that belong to the female community.

Tut tut. Boundaries are only allowed for some people. The special people. Not those with vaginas. We're not really human, remember...

Little anecdote from James Dreyfus

https://x.com/DreyfusJames/status/1860718652242141545
Backstage at the Equality Show back in ‘97 at the Albert Hall.

Young gay man nervously says to JS, “Hi Jimmy. I just wanted to let you know how much your music meant to me growing up gay..”

JS cuts him off with, “Fuck off. Don’t come to me with your baggage. I’m not your fuckin’ therapist!”, in front of everybody. Then he laughed.

That's really horrible. Including all the sycophantic laughers.

Does display all of the empathy I would expect of someone who defends GI though.

Abhannmor · 27/11/2024 09:53

TheKneesOfTheBees · 27/11/2024 08:48

I remember The Bell @Abhannmor - especially the Sunday afternoon / evening tea dances, also used to see JS at the L&G (not even any B in those days) Centre in Farringdon. Despite the greater prejudice from the outside world in many ways it was a great time to be a lesbian!

The Bell had that Time Tunnel thing on Wednesdays iirc? Brilliant music from the 1940s onwards through the evening. Balm to the ears unlike that ghastly Industrial so many clubs played all night.

Are celebs even allowed to keep their views private these days @CautiousLurker1 ? They probably have to fill in the bingo card to get a job. Kenan Malik says culture wars only work for the Right - they are a huge distraction from the issue of Class and inequality. Makes you wonder why the Left keep starting them? Like maybe they no longer give a shit about working class people.

CautiousLurker1 · 27/11/2024 08:14

Bit of a derail, possibly, but I am actually deeply fed up with celebs espousing on stuff rather than just doing their jobs. Several friends are raving about how funny, light-hearted and almost nostalgic The Rivals is, especially if you read it as a teen… but I just cannot bring myself to watch it because DT is in it and he makes my blood boil now. Such a talented actor and I’ve loved some of the recent non Dr Who stuff he’s done. I just enjoy a film/show/music track all the more the less I know about the real lives and opinions of the actors, singers, writers.

Can they all just go back to doing their jobs? Producing art and promoting it without the side helping of polemic?

Edited

Since I was a child, I’ve avoided finding out (as much as possible) what actors and other celebs are like as people because I don’t want to be pulled out of enjoying their work by knowing their personal information.

So I avoided celeb news and reading autobiographies/biographies and, in the old days that was sufficient. Nowadays, It’s admittedly a lot harder to avoid this type of info as a lot of actors, writers and musicians like to broadcast their opinions and behaviour all over the media and social media, and The Message gets rammed into films/telly/music/books to the detriment of the artistic process.

But I keep trying because, to be perfectly honest, it’s the characters they play or the fiction they write or the music they make that interests me most not the political or personal behaviour of the actor/writer/musician.

Emily Atack is also militant TWAW.

I know this is a derail but Emily Atack was related to one of the original Teletubbies (Tinky Winky)

(This is all I know about Emily Atack)

I think DT and other celebs mean well, they just have a bit of a tendency to jump on any “liberal” band wagon going assuming it’s the “right” side, without thinking deeply about the underlying issues. It does have a damaging effect but it’s not done out of malice. That’s my general view anyway.

Tink63 · 27/11/2024 17:37

I knew JS quite well back in the day. I remember him arguing for more animal testing at the beginning of AIDS, because they tested makeup on animals which ‘women smear all over their faces’. Misogynist then and misogynist now.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 27/11/2024 17:44

There are entertainers who are more than just entertainers they're also explicitly political in their music and Bronski Beat are among them. I'm very disappointed that they (or some of them anyway) have decided to go down this route but they're allowed to share their views.

Some entertainers are know-nothings and just parroting what they've heard but that's not Bronski Beat. Same as, I'm sorry Margaret Atwood is TWAW but she is a political and feminist writer and not just someone who writes entertaining novels. (I sometimes try to guess which way Andrea Dworkin would have gone on TWAW and I can't.)

Anyway, LGBA have done nothing illegal. And the music is part of their gay past (they're my generation!) so whatever the members of Brokski Beat may think about it right now it's not appropriation either.

capitanaamerica · 27/11/2024 18:03

Yep, they've always been misogynist, so no surprises. When I was at uni in the late '80s some people might have accepted misogyny as the price to pay for political advocacy, but we are WAY past that now!

Thanks, @christinapple, for the bat signal. Bronski Beat being misogynists is not new, but their being homophobic maybe is. I'd never have known that Bronski Beat stumbled so hard if you hadn't posted this here. I still mourn them, a tiny bit - I once upon a time loved Smalltown Boy.

Hmmm, you'd think he'd find out before he transed his then 9yr old and announced it publicly.
Nah, he's awful.

Perhaps, but he went further than that with his comments wishing Kemi Badenoch would cease to exist/shut up, and he has a trans identifying child too that he seems to support the enthusiastic affirmative approach to. I can almost turn a blind eye to naive and gentle ‘be kind’ness from those who don’t really understand [yet], such as Olivia Coleman, but his very vocal and ideological advocacy has been awful.

ChaChaChooey · 27/11/2024 23:55

Worth remembering that most of Bronski Beat are dead and Jimmy Somerville was only a member for a very small percentage of the time the band existed (Somerville sacked the others off after 1 year and the rest of the band did a further 14 years without him).

Perhaps the others would vehemently disagree with JS but we have no way of knowing either way.

Really? I thought that he was a fairly strict vegan. He bought some lobsters in a Swiss restaurant and put them in a lake, not considering that freshwater would kill them.

Tink63 · 28/11/2024 07:34

@SinnerBoy I was vegetarian then and was quite shocked by the comment which is why I remember it. It was the misogyny of the comment that struck me. This was just before he was famous.

celebs like DT who have trans children who they are supporting have no choice in the matter, or they appear to be monsters to the luvvie-world they inhabit.

CocoapuffPuff · 28/11/2024 11:26

Yeah, I can't really blame Tennant too much for behaving like a knob when his own kid is enmeshed in it all.

However, he'd scream and shout and hate other people if they spoke about his kid the way he speaks about those who disagree with the ideology, and that's totally illogical, but that's the essence of the whole trans thing, isn't it?

Crikeyalmighty · 28/11/2024 12:23

@Runor I work in music- music belongs to the rights holder - which in some case isa major record label, an indie label or the artist themselves in some cases- many artists have a clause stating 3rd party use has to be authorised by band or management. Problem is many artists have sold off their catalogues outright too for oodles of cash in recent years - and then you have no say - which is why you are now seeing Queens music being used in adverts Willy Nilly. Not sure what the case is here.

Jimmy Somerville left Bronski Beat after their first album, and the other two are dead, so there is no possible way Bronski Beat can "call out" or "disapprove" of anything.

Yes!

@Christinapple "Perhaps then they shouldn't be using music that belongs to the LGBT community?"

Looks like you've been community noted

How can DT have a vegan cat???? The cat would be dead! They are obligate carnivores and they need meat! I appreciate you already know this and are just pointing out the silliness of DT's position but I genuinely do not understand how his cat is alive.

Anyway I'm derailing, that was just a bit of a mental fact that threw me. Also, his comments about Kemi were awful. Regardless of people's politics.

maltravers · 29/11/2024 17:32

Unless the cat is imprisoned inside, I imagine it sources its own meat from the local wildlife. The cat will do what it wants!

Livinginaclock · 29/11/2024 19:28

A trans child is like a vegan cat, you know who's making the decisions...
