The quoted comments from the congresswoman are brilliant

A trans war has broken out on Capitol Hill after a Republican lawmaker proposed a measure to block transgender women from using biological women's restrooms in the U.S. Capitol.

If we aren't defined by our bodies, why do people who claim to have a trans identity need drugs and surgery?

Some want that, some don't. Everyone is different.

wincarwoo · 20/11/2024 11:17

Good to have nationality cleared up. What about all the other points.

So some people are defined through their bodies (unconsenting women, for instance, they tend to be actually female) but some people aren’t? Is that right? 🤔

PinkChesnut · 20/11/2024 07:40

You have zero problem with that needing to be stripped out of the bill? That male legislators put it in there in the first place?

Strange.

Loads of first drafts contain stuff that the drafters clearly didn't think through properly. Hence laws being debated and amended.

If law drafters did put genital examination in the first draft, then it was removed before the law was passed and democracy is working properly in Florida. It's normal for legislation to be modified between being drafted and being passed. This is a vital safeguard against badly-drafted legislation becoming law and in Florida the safeguard has worked.

No person is defined by their body.

Their sex however is defined by their body.

I am not defined by the fact I was born in Britain.
But I was born in Britain.

No person is defined by any one fact about themselves.
But there are facts about people.

Our sex is the most fundamental fact about us.

This is the difference between categorising humans by material and objectively defined body categories that are meaningful and categorising humans by philosophical belief.

I, too, look forward to seeing how this poster thinks humans should be meaningfully categorised. It has been an enlightening thread so far.

Given that Russia’s Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, Dimitry Medvedev, said today that it’s WW3 if any foreign power fires missiles into its territory,

And what prompted Dimitry Medvedev to issue that threat?

Sounds an awful lot like supremacism and colonization where some people get to self define and others have things imposed upon them without their consent.

I am not American and am not speaking through an American lens. I live here temporarily. And seeing as I am not a citizen I cannot vote or donate to any candidates or party.

If it's not an American lens it's a tone deaf response.

lifeturnsonadime · 20/11/2024 13:39

Great post @RedToothBrush

I see no reason at all why we should treat the wishes of males who identify as trans women as more important than the needs of women.

The only reason anyone could treat those males as more important is sexism.

Which is exactly why a return to sex based rights should be applauded.

That's excellent and an important signal, but would I be right in thinking it's the battle not the war?

ArabellaScott · 20/11/2024 19:36

It's a pretty clear.line in the sand.

To some, it matters. To others, it doesn't.

I know a trans guy who is not on hormones and has not has surgery. He is comfortable as he is and has been out for over a decade. In his own words, "nobody else decides what I am and nobody can take who I am away from me based on their own perceptions."

Not every trans person needs every single treatment in order to feel good in their skin.

ArabellaScott · 20/11/2024 19:47

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14106583/trans-congress-member-sarah-mcbride-banned-womens-bathroom.html

The Mail has just updated their article this evening.

There's an important quote in it:

Mace had introduced a bill to ban transgender women from using female restrooms on Capitol Hill.

Johnson, the GOP leader, finally weighed in on the controversy in a statement Wednesday saying McBride would have to use the restroom of her biological sex.

'All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings — such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms — are reserved for individuals of that biological sex,' Johnson said in his statement.

'It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol,' he went on. 'Women deserve women’s only spaces.'

So not only do Congress members have their own private facilities, but there is ALSO unisex facilities available.

The update now reads as if the intention of the bill is to seek to uphold single sex provision as single sex rather than be evil witches to transwomen. And the Democrats look even worse with this because they don't want to 'compromise' with the third space option as this isn't regarded as good enough.

If accurate it colours things slightly differently in terms of language being used and the context of the matter.

First trans Congress member is banned from using women's bathrooms

Speaker Mike Johnson issued a statement determining whether the first transgender member of Congress Sarah McBride can use the women's restrooms on Capitol Hill.

Hmm.

So women don't get to define themselves.

Just transwomen.

Ok. Got it.

It's not dripping in sexism and a total disrespect and disregard for women at all.

If you want to be a second class citizen, you do you.

Meanwhile women who don't shouldnt be berated for sticking up for being equal citizen and shamed for saying 'this is bollocks'.

Still applies.

They are female.

They don't get to choose. There are scenarios where this wouldn't be ok with men anymore than women.

men always gonna men tho! I mean who cares what women want

(also do they really not think we can’t see that photo is filtered to fuck)

Just trying to pee in peace.

Ok so what's wrong with just using their own private toilet or the unisex ones?

Or do they have loud music blarring in these?

He's using the women.

What do you call a man who has the choice of men's single sex bathrooms, a personal bathroom just for them alone, and unisex bathrooms and yet still chooses to go into the women's despite knowing that will probably exclude many women and retraumatise rape survivors?

It starts with a p and that man is no friend to women, the idea they claim to be one when actively destroying women's rights, safety, privacy and dignity is ludicrous.

She posted on Bluesky a selfie taken in a women’s bathroom, saying: “We’re all just people trying to pee in peace.”

What part of “peeing in peace” involves taking a selfie FFS?

Just walk into the men’s, pee, and walk out. No one cares.
