"I want all women who have been raped to say: Madame Pelicot did it, I can too. I don't want them to be ashamed any longer,"

"I've been told I'm brave. This isn't being brave, it's having the will and determination to change society."
"Bravery means jumping into the sea to rescue someone. I just have will and determination," she said.
"This is why I come here every day... Even if I hear unspeakable things, I am holding on because of all the men and women who are right behind me."

She tells a court she wants women who have been raped to know that "it's not for us to have shame - it's for them".

A truly amazing strong woman.

HermioneWeasley · 24/10/2024 18:39

She is the embodiment of courage and dignity, a true inspiration

inigomontoyahwillcox · 24/10/2024 18:44

The legacy she is creating and will leave for both the women of France, and the world for that matter, is massive. She is incredible.

Bravo Gisele, bravo.

That's right; how many was it, 80 men? And how many more did he ask who didn't respond, and how many more heard about it through the grapevine? Must be well over one hundred. And not one of them thought, fuck this, I'm calling the police?

Before Craigslist Personals was closed down, there were men who would offer to send knickers stolen from their step-daughters to other men in return for similar. Openly, on CL, not the dark web. For a while, I made a sock account to pose as a man and tell them that they shouldn't steal teen girls' knickers. The rebuke was never well-received, strangely. It's no wonder that men don't speak up.

chilling19 · 25/10/2024 06:33

'Men....there was a horrific interview with the mayor of her town bemoaning the negative publicity; saying everyone is bored of the trial; that being unconscious made her suffering far less worthy.i

Outerspace - WTF? I have no words.

HerGorgeousMajestyArabellaScott · 25/10/2024 06:48

The mayor has since gone into hiding with police protection.

What a wonderful woman. Give 'em hell, Gisele!

FreshLaundry · 25/10/2024 07:23

It’s absolutely incredible the social change she is making. The energy, determination, courage needed must be immense.

The video of women applauding her is so stirring, pure solidarity, respect and genuine thanks on show.

HerGorgeousMajestyArabellaScott · 25/10/2024 08:26

Yes, I can't recall a rape survivor having this level of public support before. Reading articles, there is graffiti all over France in support of her. In fact, worldwide.

I hope that all the attention doesn't add to the pressure she's under, though, and that she is able to get the space and time she needs to heal.

She is making an incredible stand. I don't know what the French legal system is like but I hope it draws light on the UK victim blaming approach.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/10/2024 10:11

Yes, I can't recall a rape survivor having this level of public support before.
One of the things that's different about this case is that there is one victim with many perpetrators. Other publicised cases are likely to be serial rapists where the focus is on the monster, his victims aren't (and may of course choose anonymity which is their right).

(Of course there are other victims of many of Gisèle's rapists, hopefully there eill be more prosecutions)

Kucinghitam · 25/10/2024 10:24

I've been finding this case so awful, but just wanted to add my admiration for Gisele. What an amazing, brave and dignified heroine.

Gisele Pelicot's final statement in mass rape case
"It's time that the macho, patriarchal society that trivialises rape changes"

Does anyone know if her final statement has been published in full somewhere online?

I cannot praise this lady enough

🎉🙏💐

What a bloody contrast to all those men

I think this is partly what disturbs me - not “just” that these men committed henious acts but the sheer number that must have known about it and said nothing.

Either because they didn’t care or they thought it was acceptable. And we have no idea who they are.

But I bet there are many like them out there. Not willing to be actual rapists but not willing to speak up and stamp it out either.

Echobelly · 20/11/2024 10:04

I really hope her immense courage will change the way things are - her assertion that shame should be on the rapists, not their survivors, is so, so right.

INeedAPensieve · 20/11/2024 10:10

I am in awe of Gisele every day. It's the most horrifying case and my reaction to it has been the straw that broke the camels back for me. This story and the story about ERCC. I use them both in IRL as examples of why I am so angry with men and their ingrained misogyny and all their enablers. I just don't care anymore and have started to speak up at work. To me it's all linked; genderist ideology, abuse, rape, assault of women, our rights and our sex. We are seen as sub human by these men.

themostspecialelfintheworkshop · 20/11/2024 10:11

Gisele Pelicot is simply amazing. I cannot truly comprehend how she has the bravery and resilience to do as she has and use the terrible crimes committed against her by so many men to open up a worldwide debate on women's rights, men's behaviour and the 'justice' system (steeped in misogyny).

She would be a wonderful politician though I can imagine she may very well wish to retire from the public sphere after this. She will leave a positive legacy for women and girls and I will forever associate her name with courage and strength. Not with her rapist ex husband.

I think she has changed the world with what she has done, she's blown the 'only a tiny minority of men' out of the water for a start. Agree it's horrific that no man reported it before the police accidentally found evidence.

MarieDeGournay · 20/11/2024 10:12

On se souviendra de Madame Pelicot, beaucoup moins de Monsieur Pelicot. Je veux que mes petits-enfants n’aient pas honte de porter ce nom. On se souviendra de la mamie, de Gisèle Pelicot

'People will remember Madame Pelicot a lot more than Monsieur Pelicot. I want my grandchildren not to be ashamed to have that name. People will remember their granny, Gisèle Pelicot.'

We certainly will remember, Madame Pelicot, on se souviendra!

themostspecialelfintheworkshop · 20/11/2024 10:14

Presumably any man viewing the site used could have submitted an anonymous complaint to the police. Although then it's a question of whether the police would do anything. You'd hope they would, but in this country the police force often perpetrates harm upon women and has abusers who are enabled in it's midst (e.g. Couzens) no idea if it's the same in France.

duc748 · 20/11/2024 10:39

deeahgwitch · 20/11/2024 12:03

I just hope they catch the men who so far have evaded being charged.
I think there are at least 30 more who committed the rapes or were involved but have not been charged.
Apparently it was difficult to find their identities.
AngryAngryAngryAngry

Perhaps they are purposely not being pursued????

This is another startling, but maybe not surprising, of how sexual harrassment and worse of women, is just brushed aside. From an article discussing how, if at all, this trial will force France to change the law on rape.

Sandrine Josso, an MP from the centrist Democratic Movement, told POLITICO she believes the trial will mark a turning point in how France perceives violence against women.

“There will be a before and after with this trial. Politicians must take up this issue,” Josso said.

The question of date rape drugs, which are central to the Mazan trial, is one Josso has firsthand experience with. Senator Joël Guerriau was detained by police last year on suspicion of drugging Josso in an attempt to assault her. Guerriau’s lawyer told French media that the senator “accidentally” slipped drugs into Josso’s drink and denies any intentional wrongdoing. An investigation is ongoing.

Guerriau, despite the accusations, has yet to formally resign from the French Senate.

Josso has since become a leading advocate on issues related to date rape drugs and is working alongside Caroline Darian, Pelicot’s daughter, to affect change. Josso has proposed an amendment to the French social security budget to reimburse tests for date rape drugs, even when the individual hasn’t pressed charges.

She suggested that adding consent to the legal definition of rape in France could be one step among many in addressing the issue more effectively.

Horrific rape case pushes France to change the crime’s definition

the senator “accidentally” slipped drugs into Josso’s drink and denies any intentional wrongdoing

How on earth the above excuse would be taken seriously in a court of law is beyond my comprehension?!

“Oh your honour, I just happened to be carrying this drug that can be used to incapacitate women but I had no bad intentions in mind. Somehow the drug just got out of my pocket and into this woman’s drink entirely without my knowledge. I would have warned her not to drink it if I had realised what had happened. Honest, scout’s honour.”
