Oh, and the play was written by Jonathan Harvey, who gets to write some of the best Coronation Street episodes, or did when I used to watch it.

(I was an unpaid supernumerary in the play)

I never really knew the words of Lily the Pink - I'm not sure I ever heard it on the radio, just being (mis) sung in primary school. Similarly with Thank U Very Much, which apparently began 'thank you very much for the ancient lion'Grin

For some reason I knew it thought it was the Aintree Iron, which I read it is but that made no sense.

I've got a Corrie one - one of my great aunt's best friends was Thelma Barlow, who she said was nothing like Mavis Riley.
I met her at the GA's funeral, she seemed exactly like Mavis.

I liked Thelma Barlow’s character Dolly in Dinnerladies. Was she like that, too?

Oh, Boiled, I am not worthy even to read your words!

I did once appear in a walk on run-on-and-shout part with the actors who had played Paul Connor and Tom Connor in Coronation Street. I was dressed as a nun: at least one of them was, too. It was a long time ago.

Enters stage right dressed as a nun 😁

Honestly most of the Corrie ones are purely because I, amongst my other jobs there, worked in the cafe in the theatre a lot!

A lot of 'the stories I could tell' date to a time where most of the actors I talked, ate, drank with etc were still at the first proper acting job stage. A lot of them are probably working in corporate training seminars type jobs these days!

Octoberaddsagale · 25/10/2024 02:15

At least those actors haven’t given up presenting altogether, and become whatever is the modern equivalent of double glazing sales people.

AlisonDonut · 25/10/2024 05:44

I once went to a theatre group in the evenings. And I say this with love and tenderness, but every single one of the other people in that group were batshit crazy people. I think I stayed 3 weeks and couldn't take it any more.

This was in the late 80s.

I still have all my old vinyl. Well, most of it. I did thin it down and get rid of a bunch of heavy metal when we moved to France. But I have 2 turntables and one of them is in my pottery shed, alongside all my CDs.

Anyway thanks for the cake Boiled. Just what I needed.

Just a few more hours and I'll go unload the kiln. It's always so exciting but I have to tell myself, it is just mud and if it doesn't work, redo it with more mud.

“You wont get me am part of the union” scaffold wasn’t that Paul Mcartneys brother?

It was definitely The Strawbs, but Paul Mc's bro Mike McGear was indeed part of Scaffold. ( "Lily the Pink").

I've worked with lots of celebs but my proudest moment was making Jo Brand laugh with my razor sharp ( ahem) wit. She was lovely.

Not many from soaps, and none from The Archers ( serious omission)

AlisonDonut · 25/10/2024 07:30

It looks no different from the pre firing but the tumbler is bisque fired and ready for glazing. A few bits need sanding but that's usual.

It looks slightly red as my final sponging down sponge was also being used on my red clay breakfast set and I couldn't be arsed to go get a clean one.

Off to pottery group today and then glazing will commence. This is the bit that I probably think most about than anything...what glazes and combinations to use? Do I wait till my next trip to the pottery supply store and get a fresh glaze for it? Decisions decisions...

Alison.....Terftastic! Love it.

AlisonDonut · 25/10/2024 07:47

I'm going to do CONGER OFF DONGER and WORIADS and PEDANDTRY and FUCK YOUR PRONOUNS on the next batch of clay. And I'm going to stamp the bottoms with Foucault Addled Genderr Gerbils. And number them Grimbut 1-4. And they may have quokka footprints on them. I'll have to make a quokka footprint stamp in the next firing so that it is ready to be used.

Maybe a set of small cereal sized bowls. Maybe a breakfast set. It is all up for suggestions.

Oh wow! It does look different! It looks (to use a term from my younger days) 'well good!'

I can't wait till we see what you do with it in the glaze stage.

I have no idea what is involved in the glaze stage, but I'm sure it's going to be wonderful!

In centuries to come scholars and pottery experts will spend years trying to decipher the meaning of these unique pieces and why exactly gerbils are involved.

Winner winner chicken dinner.
I'd buy the set!

Maybe the glaze should be half blue and half pink with a highly defined border between them?

Edited

I'm hoping in years to come, the AI masters will be sitting in a meeting wondering about why gerbils feature in all their AI programming somewhere and maybe, just maybe, someone will twig.

If I could stomach those colours any more...

I'm thinking Purple Green and White of course...but I do so love my current Red and Yellow. I'll scan back through all the AI since this all started the next night I'm up at 3am and can't sleep and find something I really like. I do love the colours of the Chocolate Cat from a while back. Which I could probably make from what I already have.

This one...switched to phone to post as it is still my wallpaper so that I can look at it several times a day.

I was in contact with one of the fallen off the face of the earth actors from my youth a couple of years ago, he now owns a football club, which doesn't seem like the career trajectory I'd imagined he'd take!

Could the 1-4 gerbil set be the green white and purple, but the team terf be like the cat above? (Mainly as I want to see its finished state ASAP!!)

I will think about it and make some notes and do some test tiles and come back to you.

If I can get the breakfast set glazed, I'll do a few colour mixes and get the test tiles into that firing and see what comes out.

Alison just a post to say what a great mug you have. 😃FWR has such talent.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/10/2024 09:57

I'm in awe of true craft creatives. I don't think AI and bots will replace potters; they may assist in brainstorming ideas and automating dull or dangerous parts of a process but they're not going to make a mug with a thumb grip.

It's always so exciting but I have to tell myself, it is just mud and if it doesn't work, redo it with more mud. sounds like part of a creation myth featuring a pragmatic deity.
