Keeping an eye on this. Newson makes an awful lot of money out of HRT.

Dr Louise Newson looking at the camera - she has a jaw-length bob with a long fringe, which is a red/gold colour. She is wearing a patterned silk blouse and is wearing pink lipstick. She is wearing earphones as the shot was taken from a Zoom call. Behi...

Yes I know this already but most women don’t look at that. So many women ( and men) are overweight now that it’s become the norm.

Blanketyre · 30/09/2024 21:53

I am amazed that there is a really good medicine out there that makes life so much more enjoyable for many, many women, and yet other women are bickering over whether they should take it or not.

If you don't want to take it, don't. It's not mandatory.

This is just not true. I have exercised all my adult life, slim, healthy diet. I had no problems with periods during my life and healthy pregnancies. But when meno hit my joints ached terribly, my sleep was appalling and the brain fog, anger and low mood left me feeling like a totally different person. Within 24 hours if HRT the joint pains stopped, low mood and fog lifted within a week.
Please don’t make such sweeping generalisations. HRT also has many protective factors which I value as much as the ability to loose the meno symptoms.

Same here. I gave up with the GP. I had to go private. That’s what is so shocking that we have to pay.

Why isn’t is made much clearer that obesity increases breast cancer risk? I don’t think most women know this .

I hear so many women declare they wouldn’t touch HRT because BC while being very overweight and drinking a few glasses of wine several times a week-the irony.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 30/09/2024 21:56

Drinking is a risk factor but being overweight is a much bigger risk factor. I was shocked when I recently found out and being overweight myself has made me really look at how I can lose the weight. It's now my priority.

greengreyblue · 30/09/2024 22:00

Yes , quite. Also so many women wanting hrt because of tiredness and achey joints whilst being several stones overweight. Yes I know slim women suffer with meno symptoms too but seems to be an awful lot that could try to address the obvious first

Edited

If slim women suffer with the same symptoms then why is being overweight a factor?

We're discussing evidence, risks, and benefits. It's really inaccurate, rude, and unnecessary to call it 'bickering'.

So in the wrong for not touching it and also in the wrong for wanting it. How predictable

I'm sorry, but some of these posts are judgemental and petty. Bickering is a perfectly good description.

Ahhhh well done for bringing your fat shaming into it. What a charmer you are! JFC

KnottedTwine · 30/09/2024 22:29

It’s always the same on these discussions. Sneering undertones about weight, or lifestyle, or how all you need is a bit of positive thinking and fewer carbohydrates. Some people really do think that not slapping an estrogen patch on their bum makes them better than those of us who do.

GoldLameDarling · 30/09/2024 22:32

BeforetheFlood · 30/09/2024 21:17

And so what are those other tools? That's not being talked about enough.

This 100%. There is no one size fits all, as this proves - Newson wanted to have us believe there was and her voice has dominated the space too much. I have found Mindy Pelz and Tania Elfersy more helpful for me personally, but I don't think for a moment that their advice would suit everyone.

I can't listen to Mindy speak shout about fasting anymore. She grates so badly.

This seems a simple message:

And a BMS statement

Sorry to be pedantic, but thats not the BMS. That statement is from the menopause society. Good post by Dr Ellie though!

WarriorN · 30/09/2024 22:37

Sorry not BMS (I think? Unsure. Annice Mukherjee shared it

Thanks for your message upthread @ArabellaScott 😘

Yes corrected @LivelyGoldOrca

If slim women suffer with the same symptoms then why is being overweight a factor?

Because some of those symptoms may not be meno related for all wonen. Surely better to improve lifestyle first before medicating .

Blanketyre · 30/09/2024 22:44

Hrt can give women the energy they need to make those lifestyle changes though.

BeforetheFlood · 30/09/2024 22:49

Ha - I totally get you GoldLameDarling. I downloaded her book when it was 99p on kindle so I don't have to listen! I don't follow her advice to the letter (or even close) but I'm interested in her approach and that of other scientists and nutritionists working in this field.

Mindy Peltz fasting advice makes me laugh. The list starts with the totally doable 16.8 then is just...eat less...eat even less...eat barely anything...eat fuck all.

Blanketyre · 30/09/2024 22:54

But I do try to be crystal-clear that many women do not benefit

Why on earth would you do that? It's not true for a start.

I don't believe you are a GP.

Blanketyre · 30/09/2024 22:56

Surely the vast majority of women who go to the GP with menopausal hot flushes, brain fog etc are helped by hrt? Why on earth would you tell them that it doesn't help? That doesn't mean they have to take it, but it will help if they are willing.

KnottedTwine · 30/09/2024 22:57

I completely believe she’s a GP. with that attitude of “well if you really want it I’ll reluctantly prescribe but here’s a long list of all the reasons you shouldn’t” she couldn’t be anything else.
