I would replace 'dangerous' with 'stupid' or 'pointless' but generally agree

I’d probably keep the dangerous in when it is being applied to women. The thuggish men happily use the cover of that smear to attack women.

Just to be clear I have no issue with Starmer meeting Trump.

I just wondered what the rules were on alignment and wanted to point out the hypocrisy in the position of certain posters.

My personal view is that it’s very dangerous to suggest that people with opposing political viewpoints should not be able to engage for fear of being deemed ‘aligned with’ or cancelled.

Well and succinctly put.

Apparently ( I haven't heard it) Justin Webb on R4 this morning asked Emily Thornberry about SKS's meeting with Trump and she spun it very positively. He then played a recording of Thornberry slamming Theresa May for meeting with Trump because he's a racist, white supremacist, rapist etc.

They're repeatedly being outed as complete hypocrites.

Oh that's precious

lifeturnsonadime · 27/09/2024 12:17

I think it can be dangerous because it encourages tribalism.

Discussion and trying to see other perspectives has to be preferable to refusing to engage because a person wears red or blue (or whatever the difference of opinion is over)

I just find the whole idea of shutting down people with the ‘wrong ideas’ without discussion undemocratic ultimately.

Besides the right of women to congregate and talk about things that impact us has nothing to do with party politics. Women with views that I might disagree with face the same issues when it comes down to gender and the harm to women & children. Saying they shouldn’t speak because they have different opinions is about as undemocratic as you can be.

So you can hate Trump (rightly) for his views on women & say you are worried that he might turn US into a dictatorship but I think if you also say other women shouldn’t have a platform because of ‘wrong think’ then I reserve the right to think you’re a hypocrite.

1 hr and 9 minutes 30 secs in roughly. I'm just about to listen to it

'He was a racist, pussy grabbing, child caging arsehole then, when Teresa met him, but we're going to ignore all that now, until he says he is again and forces our hand.'

CassieMaddox · 27/09/2024 12:46

BezMills · 27/09/2024 11:28

I personally don't have a problem with SKS meeting Trump. It's realpolitik that he has to be able to deal with Trump, should he prevail in the US election.

(God I hope he doesn't win, please please please)

Exactly

BezMills · 27/09/2024 12:46

fair points re 'dangerous'

Exactly.
There has been a disappointing trend on here in recent months? weeks? to try to silence women - both posters on here and women "out there". Sometimes by using guilt by association tactics and on other occasions framing perfectly legitimate comments as bullying, rudeness, a derail, trying to drive people off the board etc.

Political debate needs to be robust. We need to be free to challenge, disagree, be sarcastic and to argue. Women should not be held to a different standard to men with robust debate being considered "unseemly".

I haven't seen some of those posters using this tactic recently so they may have been fly by night scolders - but I do hope that use of these tactics stops.

Who has said that other women shouldn't have a platform because of 'wrongthink'?

It seems that Emily Thornberry, like quite a few politicians, was born without the gene that lets normal people feel shame 🤔

“hashtagBrassNeck” 🙄

Men with their own political party are allowed, but women with their own political party aren't.

Somehow, and I can't quite put my finger on it, it's beginning to look rather binary...

It is remarkable, it really really is…

Perhaps if I were to add the words ‘free from consequences’ that might help you.

Yes, the blithe way she just carried on basically justifying what's fine now, but wasn't then, was remarkable to behold

Helleofabore · 27/09/2024 14:39

It is also troubling to see some people in the media laugh and trivialise the outcome that was Moira Deeming being expelled from the Liberal Party party room.

I guess if you are happy with the vilification of women speaking on how women and children are negatively impacted by gender identity being prioritised where the priority should be someone’s sex, that trivialising this is probably easy.

MessinaBloom · 28/09/2024 02:17

Oh, okay. So no one said that, and you're just making things up.

FeralWoman · 30/09/2024 00:02

Pesutto will be back in court in 1hr 15mins. Probably lots more attention on it from the media after he admitted to deliberately revealing details of the case to Jeff Kennett. Kennett is a former Premier of Victoria.

There was a big football grand final in Melbourne on Saturday. Pesutto didn’t attend the pre match lunch despite being invited. That’s a big deal. A different Liberal politician went instead: Goth? Groth? Someone tipped to be the replacement leader once Pesutto resigns/gets pushed out of the leadership,

How much longer is this likely to go on for?

It feels like it's been going on forever!

How much longer is this likely to go on for?

It feels like it's been going on forever!

It was originally scheduled for three weeks. It’s now in the third week. Pesutto’s waffling and non-answers have had him on the stand for at least 2 to 3 days more than planned. I think that they’ll be trying to stick to the schedule because both Collins and Crysanthou have other court cases scheduled. It was brought up a few days ago.

FeralWoman · 30/09/2024 04:06

They’re pushing through today. No morning tea break. Currently on lunch break. Crysanthou really has the shits with Pesutto and his waffling. Even the judge said to him that he hadn’t answered a question and made him answer.

No direct view of the people in the gallery but I do see suffragette colours back there. Possibly a scarf.

So far Crysanthou seems to be painting a picture that Pesutto was determined to expel Deeming regardless of advice and suggestions from other party members, offers from Deeming, indications that he wouldn’t have the votes to win the motion to expel Deeming, and that he’s saying it was about the reputation of the party but it was actually about his leadership and desire to get rid of Deeming regardless. He’s looking like such a POS.
