Worldwide XX Day proposed, wear red - 10th October

Just seen on X. #TERFDayofVisibility proposed for 10th October because it's X X in Roman numerals. Suggested that women in support all over the world should wear red. Symbolic but also not as political as suffragette colours for those who need to be careful at work. I think I'll give this a go. https://x.com/sappholives83/status/1837232379179544598?t=wUUgCHATTW_qZ2O6c4z8NQ&s=19

Well, that didn’t take long…
@Neinneinnein

What didn't take long? For someone to point out that XX isn't the ideal tagline for biological women to take back the term woman?

With respect, you're nitpicking and derailing.

It's already been said that XX includes all biological women and unless you've got an answer to your conundrum about women with differences of development, then there isn't much point in you repeatedly saying 'It's not fair!'.

Not to be pedantic, but some women aren't XX, as already stated (Turner Syndrome).
There is also a condition called Klinefelter syndrome - the presence of the Y gives male characteristics however they also have XX which results in feminine aspects. These people are often labelled intersex.
I get the idea of standing up for biological females, just not sure XX is the way to go.

You are being pedantic. Does anyone else remember the infamous 'what if you lost your vagina in an accident' tweet from a few years back? This feels like that.
The existence of a tiny minority of intersex women should not be used to invalidate the fact that the rights of all women are under threat from a deeply misogynistic ideology.

I'm not saying anything 'isn't fair' though. I'm saying that the term isn't ideal. It's not nitpicking or derailing, it's show how some males may think it includes them and/or females think it excludes them.
I'm all for biological women taking back the term woman, please don't doubt that!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 22/09/2024 13:37

I'm saying that the term isn't ideal.

So come up with something else, or leave the rest of us to celebrate as we see fit.

I think you midunderstand my motivation - it's to protect this sort of day ONLY being about BIOLOGICAL women which is causing me to be pedantic (i.e. exlude all males, including those with XX alongside Y, and include all females, even with only one X).

I'd love a discussion about other terms because the idea itself is great. Essentially we're celebrating those without a Y chromosome, but obviously we'd rather a positive name though, so no mention of lack of Y in the actual name.

@Neinneinnein crikey can you give it a rest now you, have made your point more than once now.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 22/09/2024 13:45

@Neinneinnein well I sent your comments to my dp and he laughed and said he's all man thank you very much - despite that pesky extra x gene he has.

Bannedontherun · 22/09/2024 13:46

I will be wearing red and will have a big XX on whatever I wear.

I'm glad he's happy, I don't think I made any direct comments about your partner though (being as I've never met him).
The condition can vary though, as you'll both know, and some XXY men struggle in different ways.

MarieDeGournay · 22/09/2024 13:47

Somebody wasn't paying attention during the Olympics womens' boxing competition, when all the permutations and combinations of XX and XY were discussed at length - and I mean at length, I think there were several threads running at once!

'XX' is representative to all intents and purposes, and already accepted as a symbol of support for biological women - a number of women at the Olympics displayed an XX sign by crossing their index fingers over their heads, and its meaning was clearly understood.

The word 'intersex' is so out of date and rejected by people with DSDs that I think it's a kind of shibboleth (in the sense of a distinguishing word or phrase) in discussions about the rights of biological women.

I stopped watching when they let a man beat up several women.

Malvala · 22/09/2024 13:49

Whataboutery aside, count me in! It’s a great idea.

What about women with Turners Syndrome? They have one full X and either a missing or partial second X chromosome? They are definitely considered women.

Define Whatabouttery.

Yes but they are struggles because they are men. I didn't say he doesn't have struggles he does. I only said he's a man his extra x doesn't change that. Do not use people with a dsd in this way.

Lovelysummerdays · 22/09/2024 13:54

I actually really suit red so my red cashmere jumper and a red lip for me! It is a go to look though so not sure if anyone will notice.

I haven't once said Klinefelters patients aren't men or don't present looking male. I said they have XX (alongside the Y) and they sometimes define themselves as 'intersex' - it follows that some of them (especially those chosing to live as women) may think they can include themselves in XX day.
I'm not saying I think they should, I'm saying I'd not be surprised, being as many men are already trying to get themselves into women's spaces!
I'm also not 'using' anyone.

This was a real tweet??? Blimey, I mean "in an accident"? The mind boggles.

TheCultureHusks · 22/09/2024 14:47

I would think that given the general feeling that folk with DSDs are absolutely sick of being force-teamed with T, then overall there would be support for initiatives like this.

And re Turners, the point is that women with Turners Syndrome do not have Y chromosomes. Their XX may be compromised by the condition but they are not XY.

Same here. These people have Y chromosomes. They are not female.

I'm scrabbling around trying to imagine what kind of accident would lead to the loss of a vagina, that tweet can only have been written by someone who hasn't got a fucking clue what a vagina is.

Anyway, back to the topic I will rustle up something red to wear, red is also the Chinese lucky colour, could prove to be a lucky day.

Frankensteinian · 22/09/2024 15:21

Great idea!! I’ll do it

UtterlyOtterly · 22/09/2024 15:28

Off to rummage in my cupboard to find something suitable. I don't have a lot of red but there will be something.
