Posted. Hopefully helpfully.

That was a good post @CautiousLurker

I have added some thoughts too.
What a horrible situation 💔😥

Lots of lovely supportive comments on that thread. Poor daughter and poor Mum - having to navigate all this on top of her trauma.

Yesterday, by coincidence, I saw a tweet with a clip where Elliot/Ellen Page talked about the repeated sexual assaults she experienced as a child/young person (so much for MeToo empowering women to fight back), and this mother’s post made me think of that. It’s tragic but understandable that vulnerable and traumatised young females feel that escaping their womanhood is the answer, when, in fact, timely appropriate therapy and support by specialist SA/rape counsellors is needed. Ten years ago, a mother would not have thought that supporting/validating a trans identity was the best route to helping her daughter.

What she's says about Mermaids isn't just alarming. It's yet another great big red flag about safeguarding at Mermaids.

Agreed.

There are many red flags. She's is such a vulnerable situation herself as a parent, where her daughter will be getting lots of (often but not always) well-meaning advice that will blend with the TRA tactics seemlessly. The net effect will be to create a very real risk that her daughter will be encouraged to see her own mum as a threat and go "no contact".

Yes. I wish the Charity Commission would get a move on with that investigation - although I fear that a child sex change charity with paedophile and porn adjacent staff may not trigger their safeguarding senses given the usual sacred caste approach 😑

I am lost for words with what I have just read.

Healthcare
Does Mermaids offer healthcare advice?
Mermaids does not encourage, influence or direct young people, their families or professionals involved in their care to pursue any one pathway. When people seek advice on healthcare, we signpost to relevant, trusted organisations such as the NHS.

Mermaids does not give healthcare advice. We may provide general information on NHS clinical pathways, but are not involved in the provision of medical care or in advising around whether a medical pathway is appropriate for an individual.
