As we're nearly at the end of the first thread, let's make sure we keep the topic current.

There have been five women now who have spoken to podcasts about the predatory behaviour of Neil Gaiman.

First thread here:

Perhaps I should say that seems potentially dodgy, based on the wiki article on volunteer ministers. I'd hate to lay Mumsnet open to being sued by the Church of Scientology.

An interesting new development on the Reddit thread. Someone there has done some digging and regarding the "therapist" both NG and AP urged a suicidal Scarlett to contact... while it was obvious that it was super dodgy and would be deeply unprofessional anyway, it now appears this person appears to have no qualifications whatsoever and claims to have been a 'minister' of some kind. I wonder what his real connection is.

I saw that. Absolutely abhorrent. Deeply, deeply dodgy. And, as if we needed more evidence, clear illustration of how they manipulate and deceive.

VictorianBigot · 30/08/2024 20:04

All this trauma, damage and hideousness just so some bloke could get his kicks.

I must admit that the connection was my first thought too... although I believe that AP met said person first. Who knows.

I saw that @hihelenhi. It’s so fucked up.

It just gets worse and worse.

Yeah, there was a time when Scientology bigwigs used to wear clerical collars and call themselves Reverend, but that was when they were sending Heber Jentzsch out to do TV interviews and he hasn't been seen in public for many years. It's assumed that if he's still alive, and he would be very old by now, he's imprisoned at Gold Base.

If it's someone who AP knew, it's more likely just some snake oil salesman.

notathenabutcassandra · 30/08/2024 23:04

59 days since allegations of sexual assault were made against Neil Gaiman, who has yet to respond.

DeanElderberry · 31/08/2024 07:44

Yes, AP has denied being a scientologist, so obviously she can't be one. Thinking she might be just because she was the chosen partner of East Grinstead raised Gaiman is very unfair - as unfair as thinking his background might have shaped his views on women.

StainlessSteelMouse · 31/08/2024 12:52

I suppose El-Ron had some wild ideas about women - when he was hyping Dianetics to his friends in the 1950s he claimed the book could help you rape women without them knowing it - but that seems to have been a subset of his fascination with hypnosis, manipulation and mind control. Ultimately Hubbard was interested in power and money much more than sex. And I think he eventually came to believe his own mythology.

It would be very uncharitable to suppose that any of this had influenced NG.

Binglebong · 31/08/2024 13:04

Dear God, I've been reading upon Scientology and amazed anyone didn't get screwed up. Was NG part of Cadet Org does anyone know?

Still novexcuse - he's been out of it long enough to learn about boundaries.

Well, a lot of people did get screwed up, to be fair (see Leah Rimini). To bring it back to the Gaimans, there's an article somewhere about Gaiman senior and the suicide of a German guy who was at East Grinstead, that is the tale told in one of Gaiman's stories, the End of the Lane one. But yeah, I don't think his background IS unrelated at all to his tactics, shall we say, especially given the role his father had.

I'm not convinced that he's ever really been out. I used to think that he kept quiet for family reasons - his sisters are pretty influential members and I know his first wife was a very devoted member.

He's probably not active in the sense of receiving services, but he's certainly been a generous donor. And I've heard from a former staffer that in the library they have in the big LA building, where the staffers' kids hang out, that NG's books are among the very few non-Hubbard books on the shelves. That wouldn't be possible if they didn't still see him as part of the family.

wrongthinker · 31/08/2024 14:46

Yeah I agree he's still in the family. A think probably a bit like some Hollywood actors who don't deny it or admit it but are just part of it. Obviously it brings in wealth and status. And NG can call upon massive resources when needed - as we have seen.

No idea about AP but either way, she's a toxic narcissist and abusive person who seems highly likely to have been sending young women to NG to be abused.

Yeah, it looks that way from both the Claire and Scarlett stories, doesn't it? A little game going on between NG and AP, esp the Claire one.

OP posts:
wrongthinker · 31/08/2024 16:04

Yep. AP has always been a wrong un, as far as I can tell. Maybe she wouldn't have gone this far, if not for NG. It's the kid I feel sorry for. Imagine having those pair for parents.

VictorianBigot · 31/08/2024 17:04

I’ve never warmed to her even though I liked the Dresden Dolls in the early days. Her writing and interviews make me cringe. LookAtMeLookAtMe. And the stuff about rapists just being afraid and lost, BeKind even to rapists. Her response to Scarlett when she confided in her - ‘I bet he did’. Well if you bet he did why the fuck did you introduce this vulnerable young woman to him? Oh.

CorruptedCauldron · 31/08/2024 18:36

I see The Metro have reported on it too.

metro.co.uk/2024/08/31/neil-gaimans-hit-netflix-show-axed-sexual-abuse-allegations-21524790/

CorruptedCauldron · 31/08/2024 18:41

I can’t tell if the cancellation is linked to the allegations or not, but at least it’ll help to raise awareness among those people who are still in the dark. This conspiracy of silence is starting to fall apart.

JeremiahBullfrog · 31/08/2024 21:19

I've only just realised how many Neil Gaiman adaptations are being made at the moment. Three TV series (Sandman, Good Omens, Anansi Boys), plus Dead Boy Detectives only just cancelled and an upcoming Coraline musical. So some very big players have an awful lot of money invested in him not being a moral monster; no wonder the allegations haven't got more airtime. He isn't just "some bloke who was famous 15 years ago" like Russell Brand, whom the powers that be can afford to have nothing more to do with.

notathenabutcassandra · 01/09/2024 00:04

YellowAsteroid · 01/09/2024 03:33

I like the phrase ”Gaiman in the room” - let’s hope the allegations are always in the room when he is discussed.

turbonerd · 01/09/2024 10:17

I am so so so disappointed.
Not surprised, or shocked, but very disappointed.

What an utter arsehole.

I didn’t know he was a scientologist.

Have any of the visual artists he’s worked with said anything?
Charles Vess?
The other guys whose names elude me just now?
edit: Marc Hempel for Sandman apparently

turbonerd · 01/09/2024 10:21

Sam Keith and Dave McKean.
Would be interesting to hear from them too.

I appreciate it would be hard, biting the hand that feeds you.

CorruptedCauldron · 01/09/2024 11:05

The silence from his colleagues is deafening. He’s been accused of sexual assault by multiple women. How can that be hushed up and ignored while female celebrities are hung out to dry for the crime of simply ‘liking’ a tweet?

Look how the three main Harry Potter stars scrambled to distance themselves from JK Rowling for having opinions they disagreed with. She was guilty of wrongthink, that terrible heinous crime. Why aren’t Tennant and Sheen et al rushing to distance themselves from Gaiman, who’s been accused of far, far worse than uttering a few words that people didn’t like?
