Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Well, that will spoil all of my evil plans, then!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 09/08/2024 13:12

Yay indeed. Presumably now that Labour are on the receiving end of the unhinged aggression and threats from the trans extremist groups (see their response to Wes Streeting and his determination to safeguard children in the light of Cass) the realisation that this is a dangerous ideology has finally dawned.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/08/2024 13:22

Some clarification that it isn't a hate crime already would be nice as well as many people seem to think it is.

lcakethereforeIam · 09/08/2024 13:23

If I understand correctly, a hate crime is like a garnish on a regular crime. So if a tw had his handbag stolen and the mugger's accomplice shouted 'grab his bag!'. The 'his' could have made it a hate crime because misgendering.

Misgendering by itself wouldn't have been a crime. I think.

I'm glad common sense prevailed. Possibly they looked at the optics and the Scottish Hate Crime fiasco, then looked at the folx likely to be making the complaints.

This is good news for people who are keener on speaking the truth than on tiptoeing around sensitivities about “gender identity”.

I’m guessing that the government now has its hands (and overrun prisons) full dealing with people who have committed real crimes that pose a genuine threat to others’ safety: perhaps this puts “misgendering” in perspective.

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/08/2024 13:30

Great news. I'm so glad to see a return to grown up politics, instead of the divisive, misogynist, lazy governance of the last lot.

I'm going to assume that it won't be a regular old-fashioned cunty type of crime either.

Well done, Baroness Jenkin.
Great news to see Labour back-pedalling. I hope they go all the way back up the rabbit hole and back into the sunlight of supporting sex-based rights and protections for women.

I'm going to assume that it won't be a regular old-fashioned cunty type of crime either.
I think at this stage, that might be a bold assumption. Although I do hope you are right!

I’m interested in what you say because last night the BBC news reported the government’s comments on “racism and Islamophobia”. Isn’t the latter just a more specific form of the former, and if so, why didn’t the BBC just use the word “racism”? Or am I showing my ignorance on something obvious here?

edited to say: or just use the phrase “religious hatred”?

Hmm, "religious hatred". Often it isn't the hatred that is religious; in the case of islamophobia, for example, it's often a hatred of Islam or of Muslims, by people who may or may not themselves be "religious". Language is so ambiguous!

Helleofabore · 09/08/2024 14:06

Yay. Thanks Cake

Snowypeaks · 09/08/2024 14:06

I would say that they are different - racism is a belief in the hierarchy of "races" as defined by skin colour. (Or was until 5 minutes ago.)
Islamophobia is more like antisemitism - different "races" can be Muslim or Jewish. Black people, white people and Middle Eastern people are Muslim/Jewish. And even if only Middle Eastern people were Muslim/Jewish, Islamophobia/antisemitism would not apply to other groups of the same "race" who ere not Muslim/Jewish.

Edited for clarity

FrancescaContini · 09/08/2024 14:21

Thank you - I understand this. I also think that the heat is muddling my attempts at thinking straight!

That's a very good point.

Perhaps actually being in charge of running a country for the first time in 14 years (the first time ever for most of the cabinet personally) has given them a different perspective on where people's gender identities belong on the list of priorities.

HermioneWeasley · 09/08/2024 14:49

@FrancescaContini you are right. There are already protections on the base of race/ethnicity and religion. I can’t see any need for Islam to need its own protection. No ideology should be exempt from criticism, especially one that is consistently used to deny half the human race our human rights and executes people for being gay. While I have no beef with individual Muslims, there’s plenty to criticise in Islam - Iraq has just reduced the age for girls to marry to nine. NINE years old because that’s in line with what the Prophet did. It’s disgusting and we shouldn’t be afraid to say so.

I would be grateful for complete clarity on the matter of non-crime hate incidents.

I'm still rolling my eyes at the recent news that indicates 1 in 10 people in Scotland are on an intelligence database.

A Police Scotland database contains the names of more than 500,000 people despite the fact many have never committed a crime, prompting calls for a review.

"Non hate crime incidents" is a concept that needs to be expunged from our collective vocabulary.

A non hate crime incident is a non crime.

The words "hate" and "incident" are entirely irrelevant if there is no crime.

If it is neither a crime nor an emergency, it is not a police matter, so perhaps they could get back to catching rapists and attending road traffic accidents.

Snowypeaks · 09/08/2024 15:56
