Bumping this. So important given the BMA's outrageous behaviour.

WarriorN · 08/08/2024 21:18

Amazing list that's growing.

This one stood out:

Dr Phil Hammond Retired doctor, medical correspondent Private Eye

Igmum · 08/08/2024 21:29

Yay for Phil Hammond! So proud of all of these medics standing up for actual science

2Rebecca · 08/08/2024 23:03

I've signed it as have several of my partners. It's particularly important that BMA members sign it

Faffertea · 08/08/2024 23:21

I’ve also signed it and I have to say was relieved that my name doesn’t have to be published. My name is very identifiable and I would still fear backlash and vexatious complaints from TRAs.

That in itself infuriates and shames me when so many brilliant women do risk their jobs.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/08/2024 23:56

Signed via a link on a n other site.

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 09/08/2024 00:07

Glad to see this. How many members does the BMA have and what number of signatures would be overwhelming evidence that this letter represents majority view?

Glad to see this. How many members does the BMA have and what number of signatures would be overwhelming evidence that this letter represents majority view?

The BMA Council which voted to "review" the Cass Review in secret without consulting members has 69 members. So having 900+ many of whom have relevant expertise the letter has already beaten that.

The BMA as a whole has 195,000 members. We shall see how many come forward to defend the council.

Basically by forcing public discussion the letter has already done its job. The "review" if it happens has been undermined.

Thanks for sharing! Just signed.
BMA member here, but maybe not for long if we don’t get a better response than that letter!
There are quite a few well known psychiatrists on the list so I may be brave and share with some colleagues!
Will email the BMA individually as well

Excellent. Thank you.

Omlettes · 09/08/2024 02:07

Thank god, I've been wondering when oh when was the medical profession going to speak out.
I really wanted to read the BMA response but it wont expand, and its far too small to make out.

GenderBlender · 09/08/2024 07:12

That is a whole lot of angry drs. Great to see so many paediatricians there. They know children aren't just mini adults.

BMA basically saying they have concerns, due process was totally followed, stuff leaked to press, people horribly abused. Now commissioning an evidence based review to be led by Dr David Strain. What evidence they this they will find that Cass didn't, they don't expand on.

Slothtoes · 09/08/2024 07:59

Just from a quick google of the name, so perhaps it’s the wrong person but, why would the BMA ask an expert in older people’s cardiovascular health to lead an evidence based review of paediatric medical literature? Shouldn’t it have been someone with expertise a bit closer to paediatric clinical medicine? I mean given everyone knows that the evidence will be presented from some quarters in a quite indoctrinated way, so will need a lot of questioning applied to its relevance for children?

anyolddinosaur · 09/08/2024 08:36

Wonder if this Dr David Strain is the Professor from Exeter, probably as he is the chair of the British Medical Association’s Board of Science. He is also a consultant on Exeter's ME service. that's the service responsible for the care of Maeve Boothby-O'Neil who died at home aged 27.

"Four months before she died, aged 27, Boothby O’Neill wrote to her GP: “I know you’re doing your best for me but I really need help with feeding. I don’t understand why the hospital didn’t do anything to help me when I went in.
“I am hungry. I want to eat. I have been unable to sit up or chew since March [three months before]. The only person helping me eat is my mum. I can’t get enough calories from a syringe. Please help me get enough food to live.”"

WorriedMutha · 09/08/2024 14:36

My husband signed the letter this morning. He opted for anonymous and not to have updates on progress. Does anyone know how to link to the current number of signatories? I would like to see it progress but can't figure out how to check.

CocklesandMussels · 09/08/2024 16:28

Signed just now, and thank you to those who have organised this

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/08/2024 18:16

This is great. Well done to all!

2Rebecca · 09/08/2024 18:44

The people in charge of the petition are doctors so are fitting updating the signatures in their spare time so there won't be instant updates of signatures

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/08/2024 18:56

Yes, can imagine there won't be. Also possible to sign anonymously, which some people may need.

DianeBrewster · 09/08/2024 19:26

well done all! What's the collective noun for a whole bunch of professors and / or consultants? An impressive list so far.

AuntyFunGal · 09/08/2024 19:48

I saw David Bell on there - I presume ex Tavi.

drspouse · 09/08/2024 20:03

Not a medical doctor but curious - can anyone see the list of signatories?

MotherOfVizslas · 09/08/2024 20:32

I've signed (anonymously to my shame, but I'm scared of potential backlash😞)
