The original premises are getting crowded, we need to expand.

Welcome all women, and well behaved animals.

Oh pikelets all.round please. I could just eat one (or two) dripping with runny hot butter...mmmmm.

And coffee please.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/09/2024 07:39

This says pikelet is a West Midlands dialect term

I first met pikelets in the east midlands, specifically Nottingham, where they were like thin crumpets. One of the Henry Trease Black Banner books has a discussion of them where the speaker believes it to be the correct regional name for what is called crumpets elsewhere.

Now that I've found I can make something of the sort myself using spelt flour I can state that in this tiny bridgehead of pikelet cultural colonisation of Ireland they are like small flattish crumpets full of holes that contain butter (and honey) perfectly.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/09/2024 10:32

I agree with @DeanElderberry .
I was born in Nottingham where it's definitely pikelet country, and later lived in the West Midlands where it is absolutely not.

What does Oxford know about any of this?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/09/2024 12:30

I feel like a bad and useless Wolef today. I have had to say to dh that I couldn't cope with him going away from Thursday to Sunday, for a mixture of work, and going to see ds1 to help him because my DIL is having a really rough pregnancy with hyperemesis/nausea. I barely cope with him going away for one day a week (he does a long day, leaving at 3.30am, going to London or Derby, and getting home around 10pm) - so the thought of four days was unbearable.

I know he feels torn, and wants to go and help out in Ipswich, but I really don't think I would cope. I know that makes me sound awful.

EdithStourton · 03/09/2024 12:53

SDTG, you have post-Covid issues, right? If so, it is NOT your fault that you're unwell.

I am sure you know this, but it is crap to feel useless and needy.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/09/2024 12:55

You don't sound in the least bit awful Wolef. You sound like a person who knows her limitations and needs, and I say a big hurrah to that.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/09/2024 12:57

Thank you so much. Sorry to be a wet blanket.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/09/2024 12:59

I have lupus ( rather hoping this may confer honorary Wolef status) and the fatigue is ghastly. I'm fortunate in having good days, and manage with very early nights, afternoon naps and a very supportive DH.

But feeling crap is feeling crap, and your crap is no less worthy of support than your DIL. Who, I assume, also has the support of her partner.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/09/2024 13:07

You can definitely be a Wolef, @FuzzyPuffling - wonderful to have you! Lupus is an horrible thing to have.

Dh is wonderful - he does all the cooking, laundry and ironing, and doesn't bat an eyelid when I sleep like the dead until 11am or later, and then need a nap in the afternoon too. But he says he needs to get out of the house for the day, for his own mental health, which I do understand. I can cope with one long day of him away, even though I don't like it - but the thought of him away for four days was too much. He has accepted it, and does seem to understand.

Ds1 is very supportive of our DIL - he is working from home as much as he can, and when he has to go into the office, her parents come and help out - her mum will be moving in, when she has the twins. We are just hoping that, as she gets past the first trimester, the HG will recede a bit, and life will become more liveable for her.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/09/2024 13:12

Very proud to be a Wolef. Thank you! 🐺

Four days is certainly quite a long time to be on your own when its so difficult. I'm glad your DH is so supportive. Can you support DIL in any other ( long distance way?) Obviously not sending food! I do hope she feels better soon. Is it extra hormones with twins?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/09/2024 13:20

There's some cosy Wolef fleece throws in the snug for you. Colin thinks he's camouflaged among them but tbh that's wishful thinking.

The person I see (online) from the Post-Covid Fatigue service tells me that I need to be more patient with myself. STDG, take heed.

DH has just had 10 days away in Scotland. It was fine for me, I am probably much further along in my recovery than you are. I just stayed at home and didn’t need to do anything for anyone else.

This is what he brought for me, insisting several times that they are not gluten-free. I am, but that’s not the point of them.

I will happily snuggle with Colin in the Wolef fleeces, @ErrolTheDragon. I may have a gravy bone or two hidden about my person, if he would like them.

@JulySheWillFlyAndGiveNoWarningToHerFlight - that is good advice - thank you. And a dh who brings you Tunnocks products is definitely a keeper.

JulySheWillFlyAndGiveNoWarningToHerFlight · 03/09/2024 13:56

I also do my best to avoid morning appointments, even online. My latest waking up record is probably 1pm.

Do not think of yourself as bad or useless, STDG, but poorly.

The long Covid therapist also talks about social and emotional energy, which is what you use up in groups of people. It’s not just physical energy that you can be short of. This has helped me turn down invitations to social events, which I used to enjoy but now can’t be bothered. It’s not depression or being antisocial, it’s fatigue and it will get better.

JulySheWillFlyAndGiveNoWarningToHerFlight · 03/09/2024 14:05

Thank you for the kind words, Banned and STDG.

I returned the Tunnocks to the person who brought them, while admiring his restraint at not eating them earlier, especially the ones which got a bit damaged by Scottish rain. I can pinch the remaining ones back and leave them at the bar.
One per person per day, please. Share.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/09/2024 14:16

So true about the social energy, July
It's probably what I struggle with most, as it just makes me look antisocial.

Re Tunnocks ( possible hereby warning), the Lidl version of the Caramel wafers is very good indeed. Known as a "Notatunnock" in this house.

Bannedontherun · 03/09/2024 14:31

Ooo fuzzy my hubby shops a Lidel. (I don’t do shopping) Will be trying them, thanks
