They have started a crowdfundee because corporate partners dont want to be associated with them. Can't picture why.

OH YES I CAN! THAT PICTURE HAS BEEN ETCHED INTO MY MEMORY AND ALL THE BLEACH IN THE WORLD CANT REMOVE IT

Where is the Charity Commission investigation into Mermaids? You would have thought that as children are involved it would have been considered urgently?

ResisterOfTwaddleRex · 11/07/2024 11:04

I think we thought that about the NSPCC one. Maybe they've had to buy a new carpet and broom?

doggolove · 11/07/2024 11:09

published in Diva magazine, that wonderful publication? 😏

WickedSerious · 11/07/2024 11:11

Time for them to fold and fuck off, bunch of crooks.

I was coming here to post precisely that. I'm surprised they are still afloat, albeit only just if the crowd funder is anything by which to judge. There can have been no outcome as yet, as surely this would have been publicised. But every time this supposed 'charity' comes to public notice - always for entirely the wrong reasons - there's a huge public outcry followed by radio silence.

Why are they teflon-coated? And where do they get their power, support and protection from? In the wake of the Cass report these questions are all the more urgent, and in the light of her conclusions I'll content myself simply by saying that these people should be nowhere near children.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 11/07/2024 12:38

Obviously it's irritating to see them still grifting but I'm gonna take a moment to appreciate how far they have fallen since sunlight was shined on their nefarious activities.

A few years ago:

  • A list celeb endorsements
  • Bug corporate sponsors
  • Susie Green swanning around boasting about getting surgery for her son when he was underage

Now....

Help us we're poooorrrr! Givvus money pleassseeee!!!

Okayornot · 11/07/2024 12:39

Probably shouldn't have spent money breaching their objects and challenging the status of another charity.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 11/07/2024 12:42

Probably crossing their fingers for Kinnock (with his trans kid) now he has a job in government. Kinnock junior that is.

knittin · 11/07/2024 12:47

“With trans youth facing urgent problems such as an emergency ban on puberty blockers”
What they mean is Mermaids are facing urgent problems

MaybeAlbaThisTime · 11/07/2024 12:48

It's interesting that the article was published 3 days ago and they haven't hit 20k yet, isn't it?

ThreeWordHarpy · 11/07/2024 12:54

I presume that the Cass Report has fundamentally changed the landscape. Especially with respect to people providing funds and sponsorship to an organisation opposed to Cass.

Never Mind Reaction GIF by MOODMAN

"The charity is reaching out due to the ongoing Charity Commission inquiry, which is significantly weakening their services, staff wellbeing and finances. They have also cited other issues in securing funding such as hesitations from corporate partners due to worries that their support for the charity will receive backlash."

Well that's a change in fortunes from a few years ago isn't it!

It's breaking my black and shrivelled heart.

MarieDeGournay · 11/07/2024 13:57

I'm surprised they can fundraise while being investigated by the Charity Commission.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 11/07/2024 14:20

It's good to see that the nature of the CC investigations - paedophile / porn related issues in a children's charity - are being taken seriously by potential corporate donors. And now Cass has exposed the terrible impact of puberty blockers on physically healthy children, any organisation still pushing this exposes their lack of care and due diligence.

It's almost like their decision to try and weaponise The Charity Commission has spectacularly backfired and is hurting them far more than their unsuccessful attack on the LGBA.
Fucked around they did, found out they did. Oh well, never mind.

flyingbuttress43 · 11/07/2024 14:47

Well, if Mermaids hadn't so successfully spent the last decade or so persuading vulnerable children and young people that their problems meant they were clearly born in the wrong body, there wouldn't be such a demand for their phone lines would there?

doggolove · 11/07/2024 14:48

will be extremely shocked and surprised if Mermaids can continue in light of the Cass review and our own government, in the words of Wes Streeting, saying he's going to uphold the findings of the Cass review. How can Mermaids carry on in a post Cass world? They simply can't.

Fenlandia · 11/07/2024 14:52

Why aren't all their flying monkeys on TwitterX rallying round to raise funds for them? That guy who did a gaming marathon for them? David Tennant? I'm not surprised corporates are giving them a wider berth these days.

Chersfrozenface · 11/07/2024 14:53

It will be interesting to see what Wes Streeting says and does about the temporary ban on private clinics prescribing puberty blockers running out on 3rd September.

lonelywater · 11/07/2024 15:00

What do you mean "again"? Their entire gig has been grade A snake oil since they went bonkers on the gender Kool aid.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 11/07/2024 15:25

Mermaids became like something out of a horror movie. Parents encouraging other parents to enable the medical profession to perform experiments on their children to make what they’d done to their own kids seem ok. <shudder >

SidewaysOtter · 11/07/2024 15:50

Oh how far they have fallen. A few years back they must have been tripping over eager allies waving chequebooks. Now they’ve got their begging bowl out.

<looks for tiny violin>

And their staunch supporter Neil Gaiman.

PronounssheRa · 11/07/2024 16:21

Prince Harry has thrown support mermaids way more than once, maybe he could give them a few quid.

It's astonishing how many celebs mindlessly supported mermaids. The sooner it folds the better.

And why are the charity commission taking so long?
