They have started a crowdfundee because corporate partners dont want to be associated with them. Can't picture why.

OH YES I CAN! THAT PICTURE HAS BEEN ETCHED INTO MY MEMORY AND ALL THE BLEACH IN THE WORLD CANT REMOVE IT

Prince Harry has thrown support mermaids way more than once

Part of me has often wondered if Kate was unhappy about this. It did used to be popular rumour she was an MNer. Plus she's no dunce, it's easy enough to imagine she wouldn't have fallen for it. But who knows.

Why aren't all their flying monkeys on TwitterX rallying round to raise funds for them? That guy who did a gaming marathon for them? David Tennant? I'm not surprised corporates are giving them a wider berth these days.

They've been memory holed like other perps and victims of the TRA movement such as Isla Bryson and poor Jazz Jennings

From 'that never happens' to 'that never happened'.

Has anyone from the TRA side accused Mermaids of being transphobic yet?

And their staunch supporter Neil Gaiman.

But of course

Staff wellbeing is suffering? My heart bleeds….

MaybeAlbaThisTime · 12/07/2024 07:45

The other funny thing is how almost all the recent amounts donated are odd amounts ending .10, .40, .70, .90. In other fundraisers I've seen, it's been really unusual for people to give amounts that aren't whole pounds, even if the number of pounds is small. Any theories about why this is? If I were a nasty suspicions person, I'd wonder whether the donations listed were illustrative examples (programmed/made up) rather than each corresponding to a different donor choosing how much to give. Or is there a secret code embedded in the amounts? Better ideas?

Are these amounts originally in another currency perhaps? And given as pounds sterling, once converted?

MaybeAlbaThisTime · 12/07/2024 07:57

I wondered about that but I don't think it's likely. For one thing, in that case why wouldn't the number of pence be truly all over the place? (Ten recent donations are shown and they all have the form I mentioned - there's no .27 or .64, come to that no .00 or .50!) For another, Mermaids is a UK organisation; and I don't think it's a timezone issue either for various reasons, including that the total hasn't been going up (much? At all?)

SummerScarf · 12/07/2024 08:20

Gift Aid being added because Mermaids is, for now, a registered charity?

Untranslatable · 12/07/2024 08:22

It's to cover the transaction fee.

For example, on a donation of £15 it will suggest increasing to £15.90 to cover the transaction fee.

Mermaids are on the grift again.
MaybeAlbaThisTime · 12/07/2024 08:28

Ah, what a boring correct answer - I should have thought of that though. My conspiratorial thoughts were so much more interesting. Thanks @Untranslatable !

highame · 12/07/2024 09:08

I have a very small glimmer of hope that the Charities sector as a whole will come under some scrutiny. I know it's only a small glimmer because the majority of larger charities are on the political left, but there are often bad media stories and the public in general think charities waste money. The brouhaha about Mermaids should have got the government thinking

Runor · 12/07/2024 09:42

Are any corporates still supporting Mermaids? Their website is surprisingly coy about which (if any?) firms are contributing

LizzieSiddal · 12/07/2024 09:51

What a joy to read this abhorrent charity has run out of money.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 12/07/2024 09:52

But they were getting money from lottery, donations, going into schools and scaring the kids… were they just paying £££££££ in salaries?

Donations in $ from the US and this is the conversion to £

HoneyButterPopcorn · 12/07/2024 12:18

That’s Americans for you… meddling in things they don’t understand and don’t care how much damage is done.

WyrdyGrob · 12/07/2024 22:50

And why are the charity commission taking so long?

keep having to pop out to get more brain bleach?

I was under the impression that all three of them had supported Mermaids. Susie Green was invited to a Buckingham Palace event that they hosted.

ResisterOfTwaddleRex · 13/07/2024 17:42

I think the invitation was / had to be joint, Difficult. Pure speculation of course, just seems to be that KM would be the one to suss them out. She genuinely seems to understand and care about childhood.

Omlettes · 13/07/2024 17:56

I love the way commenters are jumping to the most paranoid conclusions about the uneven sums, when Occams Razor suggests its just the extra ammount for the platform.
And then we accuse Tras of fantasy🙄

This is a bit OTT - somebody picked up on the odd donations, and other people with better-honed Occam's Razor immediately explained them, and then the original somebody said Ah yes I see now and made a little joke about their conspiratorial thoughts...
Not exactly ' commenters are jumping to the most paranoid conclusions', now is it?
