All we can do now is just keep on doing campaigning. We have seen ministerial appointments change, if AD is either not being effective or is too ideologically driven that is something that Starmer, if he is still Prime Minister will have to deal with. The position becomes meaningless if all it becomes is a pseudo 'equality for all' position and I think that there are more than enough voices in the Labour Party to exert pressure. And I hope, optimistically, that the pressure will build to a point where changes for the worse are not enacted. I do think that Starmer has now shown that he really doesn't support women at all when the hard decisions have to be made.

CaveMum · 08/07/2024 12:13

BBC reporting it as a shared appointment but that they are seeking clarity.

Depressingly it is being reported by their LGBT/Identity reporter which shows (unsurprisingly) what the BBC consider the point of the position to be.

Any word on this from Sex Matters, LGB Alliance yet?

Sex Matters will probably be congratulating her 😒

Oh, for fuck's sake.

duc748 · 08/07/2024 12:17

Well, that's the BBC for you.

LakeTiticaca · 08/07/2024 12:21

Oh well you get what you vote for

fromorbit · 08/07/2024 12:27

Not all bad news we have another gender crit/LWD signer on Front Bench as of today

Dame Diana Johnson, MP Hull North & Cottingham, Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee

Now a Minister of State in Home Office.

Tippexy · 08/07/2024 12:27

Well, I have to say that there are different definitions legally around what a woman actually is. I mean, you look at the definition within the Equality Act, and I think it just says someone who is adult and female, I think, but then doesn’t say how you define either of those things. I mean obviously, that’s when you’ve got the biological definition, legal definition all kinds of things…’

Yup, we’re fucked.

TorroFerney · 08/07/2024 12:30

Now i was just saying to my husband I'd not seen her on the tv for ages, at one point she was the voice of Labour it seemed - well at least on breakfast tv. I shouldn't have mentioned her, I feel I have somehow conjured her up.

BonfireLady · 08/07/2024 12:37

Fingers crossed for an articulate, knowledgeable Opposition leader.

This goes way beyond women's rights and vulnerable children being put at further risk of harm (as if that wasn't enough!). It's an issue of freedom of speech and thought as well.

Kemi, please step forward.

If anyone hasn't read it, I can recommend Blind Faith by Ben Elton. It's a kind of 1984 with direct relevance to today. It was written in 2007 and even has lots of people working from home and only going in to the office for "team days". I feel like we've just entered a new chapter within it 😔

WarriorN · 08/07/2024 12:57

Is phillipson a they them now too?

Dodds- Minister for Women.
duc748 · 08/07/2024 13:01

"They was", shurely? 😛

Madcats · 08/07/2024 13:04

I'd like to think the "they" thing is just drafting: The Secretary of State could be a male or female so they keep the role as "inanimate" or neutral.

The Guardian journo, Pippa Crerar tweeted (my bolding):
"Anneliese Dodds will lead on women & equalities brief w/ joint role between DfE and Cabinet. She will attend cabinet. Phillipson’s role is primarily to fulfil constitutional requirement to have a minister at full cabinet level. Neither post fulfils Dodds’ promise at Labour conference last year: “If Labour wins the next election, I will become the UK’s first ever Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, with a seat at the top table, dedicated to advocating for women in all their diversity in every Cabinet conversation.”

So Dodds turns up to take notes/ hand out the cups of tea at Cabinet?

Is this normal?

fromorbit · 08/07/2024 13:04

TRAs on twitter melting down because Dodds met LGBA a while back. So she is probably getting lots of death threats now sadly.

Meanwhile JKR is not impressed she has linked to a transcript of an interview from 2022 where Dodds got confused what a woman was:

@Madcats, I'd LIKE to think so, but who the fuck knows with this lot?

Phillipson appears to have been appointed today.

https://www.gov.uk/government/people/bridget-phillipson

Well she told us in the interview with Laura Kuenssberg that Labour would not retain
the proposed clause in the education guidelines against teaching the concept of gender identity… because trans people exist, if I have remembered correctly, by which she means, at a guess, that people are born trans. She never mentioned the Cass report.

She told us in another interview that transwomen with GRCs (in practice any men who say they are women) would use women’s lavatories, and by extension no doubt that also means gyms, changing rooms, etc.

Keir Starmer may be keeping his hands clean while passing on the deeds to be done about this.

Imnobody4 · 08/07/2024 13:15

This is appalling. If Dodds is Minister for women and equalities at a junior level it means there is no Minister for Women [Victoria Atkins once had this role and I think Sajid Javid was Minister for Equalitues.]

Redshoeblueshoe · 08/07/2024 13:19

Actually it's quite clever - put all the blame on the women, then say they brought it on themselves.

WickedSerious · 08/07/2024 13:23

A little bit of sick came up when I saw the thread title.

Brill. I KNEW I shouldn't get too happy about the upcoming changes in school guidance.
I am bloody fuming about the lot of them.

Women's rights are well and truly screwed!

I am so glad Starmer ended the culture wars on day 1.

Daily Mail

JK Rowling launches a fresh attack as Keir Starmer appoints TWO women and equalities ministers... one who thinks trans women with penises can use female loos and another who said there are 'different legal definitions' for 'a woman'

Well if they thought it would all go quiet just because of a huge majority ….

Exactly.
He is typically passive aggressive. Have others do the dirty work.
Why were these women promoted to these positions and others from LWD held back?

It's all just smoke and mirrors.

I don't understand this - why is she in Education Dept?
Pretty fed up .

Perhaps this is their way of warning us that they aren’t going to sort out Education either?
