I enjoyed his books on my early 20s. I was a fan, my brother too.
But I never realised about the Tumblr stuff or that he engaged so much with his fan base.
But, did none of his agents / handlers / management etc ever day to him, "look this is really unprofessional". "When signing autographs, please dont single out young women". Or. "it's not a good look to ask for your fans to send you bath pics". Or "if you employ people, best to set up formal contracts rather than make vague promises".
I have been in the workforce for well over 20 years, and at any point in my career, if I had come across someone behaving like NG, I would have identified it as outside the norm and inappropriate.
I have come across highly influential colleagues who act inappropriately (not sexual abuse) but almost groom people into going on with their behavious, whether it be bullying or something else. Maybe that's what happened. But even in those cases, there has been a recognition that it's not right. A level of uncomfortableness.
I wonder if those in his circle just shrugged their shoilders and went, "oh look, it is just Neil being Neil".
They are filming The Sandman at the moment, which is Netflix. I wonder of NG is too much of a cash cow for Netflix and Amazon for them to take notice.
