If you're going to change your name to a letter of the alphabet, why 'D'? It's too red pen 'see me', or (possibly nominative determanism) 'dunce'. I can understand avoiding 'A', what's your name? A. WHAT'S YOUR NAME? A!. B would have been nice 🐝

Dee could have asked any one of the many thousands of UK women who change their names annually how they handled the terribly traumatic voting process.

But they're scary c-c-c-cis- wimin who will curse me if I approach them with my sPetizL self...

Choochoo21 · 04/07/2024 09:55

I feel so sorry for her.

How difficult it must be that people are talking about voting and not you and your gender/sexuality.
How does one cope without attention for a few minutes.

If there was only a way she could try and make the voting about herself.

LittleGreenDuck · 04/07/2024 10:03

I'm confused as to why, if she doesn't want to be seen as a woman, she changed her name to one which is generally used for women.

I suspect my confusion is less than hers.

Emdubz70 · 04/07/2024 10:17

I can’t get past ‘per say’ and how Dee would probably be pissed off that this is the main thing I remember from her tale of trauma.

mrshoho · 04/07/2024 09:29

Dee should have listened to they's Mother's wise words. "Why don't you just go by the name Dee if that's what you want?" Why go through the bother of changing your name by deed poll but then not changing your other documents? I can feel the Mother's exasperation lol. Dee seems quite needy and helpless. I'm surprised Dee had the skills to sort out that deed poll all on their own.

Yep my take away was Dee didn't want to have Dee's 'dead name' on official documents so Dee changed Dee's name by deed poll, then left Dee's 'dead name' on all Dee'd official documents.
Mmm OK.

What is their/zir etc.highest educational qualification? I CBA to go back and look.

If it's a PhD, that's Level 8. And they/ze etc. can't spell 'per se'.

MrsLeonFarrell · 04/07/2024 10:40

That was a bit of a nothingburger. I have never heard of a male Dee so I'm not sure the name is as non binary as she thinks.

randomusernam · 04/07/2024 10:46

RedHelenB · 02/07/2024 16:16

Well, if they haven't got Voter ID they won't be able to. Have they not heard of a postal vote?

I was going to say why didn't she just get a postal vote! She has changed her name since 2023 so plenty of time to apply for postal vote

CriticalCondition · 04/07/2024 10:51

I think I read Dee has a BA in English Literature from Queen Mary's. I expect the subsequent Masters in Genderwoo from Birkbeck taught zer/zie/thems that spelling is a spectrum and a word can use any combination of letters it likes.

Spelling bigots, the lot of you!

lcakethereforeIam · 04/07/2024 11:01

Cis-grammar 😃

I can think of several countries where she really would be petrified just because she is female.

Absolutely! And really would be in serious danger of physical violence.
First-world problems ….

Nothing says 'smash the patriarchy' like literally upholding a giant golden dick.

Words fail me. She actually is holding a giant gold dick award. Dee, I’m trying to put this gently, what is this telling you?

Catsmere · 04/07/2024 11:36

VelvetBow · 04/07/2024 09:28

Imagine being this self absorbed. I've changed my name by deed poll and all, it's not hard.

This self absorbed when they're boring as fuck, too.

AstonScrapingsNameChange · 04/07/2024 13:12

What on earth qualified this train wreck of a person to advise schools?

Their understanding of personal responsibility, personal effectiveness, initiative, grammar, critical thinking, decision-making ability and ability to follow instructions all seem to be lacking.

Ffs.

TWETMIRF · 04/07/2024 13:19

You know how the candidates and their supporters wear rosettes to show their party? Maybe Dee could get a special one made to let everyone know how special she is and she could hang around the polling station to enjoy getting scared od people seeing her.

Skyisbluetoday · 04/07/2024 13:26

'While I had been out as non-binary, using they/them pronouns, in every area of my life since I discovered the label, it wasn’t until I legally changed my name that I decided to tell my family that I identify as non-binary'.

I struggle to comprehend why someone who is so keen on not being type cast (as if), delights in slapping on another label.

Asking someone's pronouns is as important as finding out their name

Making your pronouns clear is no different than people clarifying that your name is, in fact, just ‘Becca’ and not ‘Rebecca’.

That was a bit of a nothingburger. I have never heard of a male Dee so I'm not sure the name is as non binary as she thinks.

To be fair, I know one chap whose name starts with a D and got the nickname Dee from a young age. My mother in law similarly has a name starting with D and goes by the nickname Dee. They are very very different people - conservative v socialist, vegan v fois gras is yummy, staunch church goer v pagan. You get the drift. But as they are both lovely people I’m sure they’d get on fine if they met.

TWETMIRF · 04/07/2024 13:40

Dudley Dursley had a nickname of Big D. Do you think she's twigged that she's associated herself with JKR?

lcakethereforeIam · 04/07/2024 13:42

The polls been open for a few hours now. I hope D's still safe. Thoughts and prayers.

Faffertea · 04/07/2024 13:46

What a load of navel gazing, luxury belief wankery.

There are hundreds of thousands (millions?) of people in the world where it is actually unsafe for them to vote or where they have no right to vote at all (women) and no identifying as something else changes that. Where there is actually physical violence and people disappear for openly voicing dissent. And this person is worried they won’t be allowed to vote because of lack of ID which is entirely of their own doing?

So sick of this self centred, victim mentality bollocks.

duc748 · 04/07/2024 13:51

That Metro piece:

Platform is the home of Metro.co.uk's first-person and opinion pieces, devoted to giving a platform to underheard and underrepresented voices in the media.

Under-heard? Under-represented? 🙄

MrsWhattery · 04/07/2024 14:00

"I’ve never seen non-binary folks represented in any form of media, or even considered when exploring identities which differ from cisgender unless it’s to use my identity as a political pawn."

Has they been living under a rock? You can't move for non-binary celebs and celebs' kids. There are endless fawning lifestyle articles and puff pieces about NB people's "unmet needs" (like the one who complained that all hairdressers are male/masculine-only or female/feminine-only so NB aren't provided for - ignoring the thousands of unisex hairdressers that have existed for decades...) (and the kid who was offered their own special toilet at school but still somehow had something to moan about) (etc etc)

"Even though there are barriers put in place for trans+ people"

What like expecting you to be arsed to update your records just like the many other people who change their name every year? That's not a barrier for trans people, it's a barrier for disorganised people. Which admittedly may be unfair, but it's not singling out trans.

Lordy be. I actually feel bad for people who make such ridiculous claims to victimhood, in that publications like the Metro make give them a public platform to make no sense and come across as self-absorbed and overprivileged AF.
