A survey of 2,146 voters by PeoplePolling found 48 per cent of those who backed Labour in 2019 supported the Tory manifesto pledge to amend the Equality Act to protect single-sex spaces such as lavatories and changing rooms. Just 20 per cent opposed it.

Meanwhile, more Labour voters rejected than supported the party’s manifesto proposal to amend the law to make it easier for people to change sex on birth certificates, with 40 per cent opposing it and 35 per cent in support.

I really keep wondering, what does the LP think it is doing with these policies?

I'm largely convinced now that KS is a true believer, and any sense that he was on the fence was actually him trying not to be too partisan about it.

IwantToRetire · 01/07/2024 18:16

I really keep wondering, what does the LP think it is doing with these policies?

And even though this survey has been publicised in a number of papers Labour will not think it important enough to respond to.

That more than anything is an indication of their true direction.

And why Angela Raynor doesn't think she needs to talk about gender critical groups being "hate" groups.

Ooooh, so GC wims are not just the radical fringe on these issues. Quelle surprise 😬

Thanks for posting the link OP 👍

But I thought there were only 6 of us?

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 01/07/2024 19:46

What I don't understand is that I thought Keir Starmer supported the government's intention to reform the Equality act back in early 2023. What changed? And who has advised Labour candidates to use the word 'biological woman' at every opportunity?

UtopiaPlanitia · 01/07/2024 20:09

I'm starting to regret the phrase 'biological woman' because the way Labour and other politicians are using it makes me feel that we've lost the word 'woman' to describe just us, the female of the species.

Why can't politicians and journalists just be honest and use 'men who claim they're women' to distinguish between women in general and the men who want access to women's services and spaces etc? 🤷‍♀️

But many socks... 🤣

Shame Labour doesn't give a fuck what people think. Once they have people's votes they have a mandate, don't they?

Our Tory MP emailed me on this point today, and he said that I might find it of some comfort to know I'm not the only person who's contacted him about this issue.

I'm sure I remember the Labour leadership saying that too.
It does make me wonder what could possibly have happened.

It was bloody hard to find an article. Swamped in GE stuff!

I found a report in the Telegraph but most of it was behind a paywall.

The Labour Party aren't going to be paying any attention to these straight outta Tufton St Matthew Goodwin polls.

Maya needs to find a new polling company come Friday if she hopes to have any degree of influence with the government.

Here’s the data. The column headers say “Gender” rather than “Sex” to separate male and female participants. For a poll commissioned by Sex Matters.

Thanks, very interesting.

I think I heard a senior Labour MP (not Starmer) saying they would welcome it, possibly on a radio interview. Does that ring any bells with anyone?

@Sweetpeasaremadeforbees the Telegraph article might be accessible on an archive site?

It does look as if someone might have Had A Word with them doesn't it? Now who might that possibly be?

Ooooh Tufton St. They are sooo scary.

The Labour Party will attribute some, none or less weight to this poll. And they will react accordingly.

Brielv · 01/07/2024 22:25

I'm looking at this election from the sidelines, as I can't vote. I rally hope that, even among Labour politicians, the wind is changing, and after the vote they'll kick the simplification of GRC and the ban of conversion therapy into the long grass. Do they really intend to follow the fate of the SNP? I hope it's not wishful thinking.

The irony being they're not based on Tufton St!

The aversion of some people to Tufton St makes me laugh, tbh.

We need Mark Gattis on the case to write an Inside No 9 or Dr Who episode about all the strange coincidences and horrible goings on at Tufton Street.

It'd be terrifying.

Matthew Goodwin is the sole director of PeoplePolling, he is also a director of The Legatum Institute which is affiliated with Taxpayer's Alliance (55 Tufton St) & the Institute of Economic Affairs (right wing think tank). However you paint it Labour won't be paying attention to any of his polls.

Here he is speaking at the much derided National Conservatism conference last year.
