Matt Smith and Sue Perkins

Has this been done yet?

Matt Smith has gone right down in my estimation. Sanctimonious twat.

Poor Sue Perkins being forced to apologise for not "theying" someone in order to avoid the wrath of the baying mob.

Do you have a link to what you're referring to please?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/06/2024 13:51

https://metro.co.uk/2024/06/13/sue-perkins-misgendered-emma-darcy-still-a-good-ally-21028608/

It seems Sue Perkins saw an actor who is perfectly obviously female and as is normal for us English speakers referred to this female actor as 'her' or 'she'. Matt Smith responded using 'they' pronouns because it turns out the female actor identifies as non-binary. A non-story blown up into something by the press desperate for anything they can talk about other than the election. The story I link to is by a writer who identifies as either female or non-binary, I forget which, and whose partner is the other way round. Well known transactivists both. Incredibly patronising response here:

She modelled how to be a good ally, and I think everyone should take note. If more people reacted this way instead of getting defensive, instances of misgendering would be far less upsetting for those it involves and their community.

It's about the dragon programme ErrolTheDragon

The main thing is that Sue Perkins has been made to grovel:

Look at the replies to Perkins' tweet!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/06/2024 13:53

Yes, she's been forgiven - this time. Woe betide her if she slips up again.

I can't see the replies because I'm not on X.

What's the general gist?

Sue to the thousands of young girls being sterilised and mutilated by the movement she is in thrall to : “Meh”.

Sue to a woman who she refers to as “she” : “please, please, please forgive me. I know not what I do”

"get some backbone and stop grovelling to religious fundamentalists" about sums it up.

Having read the article, tbh I think that's a bit unfair - I've no patience with 'nonbinaries' and people insisting on wrong or no sex pronouns, but it doesn't sound like he was 'sanctimonious' or actually ticked Sue off in any way.

(OT... id never heard of Emma Darcy, amusingly the top hit and wiki page really is a 'they' Grin en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emma_Darcy )

Saucery · 14/06/2024 14:05

That would be the Emma Darcy playing a character in House Of The Dragon whose whole destiny, story arc and wardrobe are inextricably linked to the fact she (the character) is female?
I mean, I can see why Sue Perkins would “say what you see” tbh.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/06/2024 14:11

Having googled...

'Emma D’Arcy: ‘I really like playing women and I’m really good at it’’

www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/features/emma-darcy-house-of-the-dragon-interview-b2173714.html

No shit. I mean the final paragraph... this is evidently someone who understands sex and sexism , pronouns and 'identity' don't opt anyone out of that.

NoMemories · 14/06/2024 14:50

Matt Smith is perfectly entitled to use the pronouns he feels comfortable with. Sue Perkins is entitled to use the pronouns she feels comfortable with. He may or may not have been over performative with his use of ‘they’. Sue could just have said sorry to those who were offended by my using ‘she’ when referring to the marvellous actress Emma but that’s how I perceive her so fuck the lot of ya! Or not.

NoMemories · 14/06/2024 14:55

‘Emma D’arcy saying ‘I really like playing women and I’m really good at it’ reminds me of a young Instagram influencer who is a transman (formerly had an account as a young girl battling an eating disorder…) who had a recent post saying ‘I’m bisexual but I’ve never had a relationship with a girl’ - when she’s clearly in a relationship with another transman.

There is no suitable emoji for the expression on my face.

CameosCodpiece · 14/06/2024 14:56

Oh God. ‘Owl’ at it again.

Saschka · 14/06/2024 15:01

This is a storm in a teacup. Matt Smith didn’t tell Sue Perkins off. Sue Perkins didn’t “grovel” - she inadvertently used pronouns Emma doesn’t want used, and because it was accidental rather than deliberate misgendering, she apologised and corrected herself when she was told. As is polite, when you are referring to somebody you know or have mutual friends with. It would be lovely if the drama could end there.

CorruptedCauldron · 14/06/2024 15:04

The clip of Matt Smith correcting Sue… he manages to throw in three very emphatic THEYs to hammer the point home. Disappointing from him but we live in such strange times. A gender non-conforming woman (aren’t we all, unless we’re Barbie dolls?) in a straight relationship with a male actor is now to be seen as an oppressed minority, and a lesbian must apologise for using correct-sex pronouns. In my younger days, if you didn’t feel like part of the so-called trendy, normal crowd you declared yourself to be ‘alternative’ (or goth, punk, emo etc). At least you had interesting music to listen to and you didn’t police anyone’s speech or cancel them from public life if they accidentally mistook you for a ‘trendy’. World’s gone mad. Emma is female.

He made a big song and dance of emphasising "THEY" right after Sue had said "she".

It's the gender ideologues who have made a big deal about this, not the other way around. If they hadn't made a big deal about it, it wouldn't even have been reported in the media and there would have been no need for a public apology.

This performative allyship is so tedious.

Another one of those relationships where you have to draw a diagram and at the end you go ‘oh, so she’s a lesbian’

Sue Perkins has gone down in my estimation.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 14/06/2024 15:10

ah the super friendly glitter LGBTQ+ community scolding a lesbian

plus ca change

emma d’arcy is another over privileged straight woman larping as a member of the most oppressed ever for bonus points in the acting community

im sure they and Emma corrin have lots to talk about

determinedtomakethiswork · 14/06/2024 15:19

My eyes are rolling out of my head. Why say you used to be a woman and some people still think you're a woman but you're not a woman really but you're still called Emma?

Mischance · 14/06/2024 15:20

Head-in-hands icon required.

We live in a world where people are blasting each other off the face of the planet, people are living on the streets, drug barons rule the streets of many towns and it is seriously imagined that this nonsense matters.

If someone knows that an individual likes to be referred to as they (in spite of the fact that they are singular) then it is only good manners to do so, but if you are not aware of that and they are visibly female no-one should have to apologise. My DGD sees herself as non-binary and I try to remember the "they", but when I forget we both have a laugh over it.

I am all for respect and consideration, but this is like the bloody mafia. There is something sickeningly self-indulgent about it.

CameosCodpiece · 14/06/2024 15:22

Tiresome self-importance.

Mischance · 14/06/2024 15:23

I am just reading a book that was lent to me by a friend as she knows about my DGD - it is written by a US transgender woman. The thing in it that has astounded me is that she gets offended when people mistake her for a woman rather then transgender - what the hell is that about?!

Abhannmor · 14/06/2024 16:20

Bit of Mattsplaining then?

Though he has gone down in my estimation, such a shame (personally) as he was my favourite of the new Dr Whos. Hey ho.
