Just listened to the latest episode of Rob Brydon’s podcast where he interviews his long-term friend Ruth Jones.

I thought this exchange at the start was interesting - they know.

Ruth: “It's a lovely intro. Very, very nice. It always makes me interested when people describe me as an actor, because I think of myself as an actress.

Rob: I am being very politically correct.

Ruth: You are, but I always correct people's political correctness when it comes to describing me as an actress.

Rob: I'd rather say actress. I would naturally say actress.

Ruth: Thank you. And it's funny because sometimes I've been introduced or I've read an introduction to something I've been doing and they've called me an actor. I said, oh no, I'm an actress.

And they go, well, no, it's our policy to call you an actor. I go, I know, but I identify as an actress.

Rob: Once you decide to identify, won't be tied anybody who gets, I identify as five foot 10.

Why is that funny? That's what I'm identifying as. How tall am I, Ruth?

Ruth: Oh, maybe you are five foot 10. Are you?

Rob: No, I'm five foot seven. Maybe five foot six and a half now. But I'm identifying as five foot 10.

So I'll ask you again, how tall am I?

Ruth: You're five foot 10.

Rob: Thank you. We're too old for all this, aren't we?

Ruth: Oh, I don't understand it. Anyway, you can't even talk about not understanding anything, can you? You just have to go, I'm old.

I can't hear very well now. So just leave me out of the conversation. Thank you.”

Monarch would be the neutral king/queen.

True, but it doesn't have the same satisfying sound as Quing.

If you don't believe that such a word is in common usage, you should have listened to everybody singing the national anthem last September - granted it was often pronounced 'Queee....ing' back then!

It's not just the titles that are separated by sex, though; also the succession and inheritance rights until recently.

Although she's the second eldest, the child of QE2 who would undoubtedly have made the best monarch out of her sibling set is fourth in line. If Prince William had been Princess Wilma, we'd be preparing for very different circumstances in (probably) 5-20 years time.

Does that overlap with wet nurse then, @ErrolTheDragon ? Now there’s a job that could only be advertised for women!

Yes, exactly - the etymology indicates it began from wet-nurse.

Laidbackguy · 22/06/2024 17:59

Feminists have spearheaded this nonsense where we’re not allowed to be honest / straight about a subject for fear of upsetting people. See the US women’s football team for reference.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/06/2024 23:26

You evidently don't know the feminists on this board.😂

They’re absolutely typical thin skinned ideologues in me experience.

Top marks for proving me wrong……

Again, why not try and attack the idea rather than the typo?

There didn't seem to be much of an idea worth attacking, just a silly and wrong generalisation

Has anyone mentioned "murderess" yet? That used to be a common term for a female murderer, at least in the 19th century. Don't know when it stopped being used.

Love it. Aspirational!

KnickerlessParsons · 24/06/2024 13:18

Lucy Worsley has a podcast series about "murderesses", so I don't think th word is totally dead yet.

That's historical cases, isn't it, so it's how they'd have been referred to at the time.

Oh actually, that's a good point - I'd forgotten that. Though as Errol says, it's using the term that was commonplace in the 19th century. It sounds odd to modern ears, it's an interesting example of how the "-ess" ending provides a different connotation. "Female murderer" sounds mundane and unpleasant whereas "murderess" sounds slightly glamorous and thrilling.

When I first read your post, I thought you were posting in order to annoy people and get some arguments going. But I don't actually understand what you mean by this statement.

Could you clarify what you mean by "feminists", what is "this nonsense" they have "spearheaded", who is "we" in we're not allowed etc, and what is it I am supposed to understand about the US women's football team? Are you arguing that feminine titles are essential and immutable and that language should not be permitted to change?

And to whom do you refer when you say (in a subsequent post) "thin-skinned idealogues"?

If I could properly understand your argument, it would be helpful to me when trying to respond.

Rightsraptor · 25/06/2024 06:32

Apologies, I haven't read the entire thread but wanted to share the word 'paintrix' that I saw yesterday at an exhibition about women painters. They were called painteress too.

Edited

Modern feminism created cancel culture, the idea that if you’re not wholly in agreement with their view point you must be silenced immediately. You must be cancelled, your employer contacted, your workplace protested etc etc.

Feminists are the pioneers of the diversity or anything but opinion is vitally important.

it doesn’t matter if a person is clearly wrong if your shout loud enough and scare people enough they will comply.

See the fact women get paid less for being women which is equivalent to women can have penises it terms of rational throught.
