Just listened to the latest episode of Rob Brydon’s podcast where he interviews his long-term friend Ruth Jones.

I thought this exchange at the start was interesting - they know.

Ruth: “It's a lovely intro. Very, very nice. It always makes me interested when people describe me as an actor, because I think of myself as an actress.

Rob: I am being very politically correct.

Ruth: You are, but I always correct people's political correctness when it comes to describing me as an actress.

Rob: I'd rather say actress. I would naturally say actress.

Ruth: Thank you. And it's funny because sometimes I've been introduced or I've read an introduction to something I've been doing and they've called me an actor. I said, oh no, I'm an actress.

And they go, well, no, it's our policy to call you an actor. I go, I know, but I identify as an actress.

Rob: Once you decide to identify, won't be tied anybody who gets, I identify as five foot 10.

Why is that funny? That's what I'm identifying as. How tall am I, Ruth?

Ruth: Oh, maybe you are five foot 10. Are you?

Rob: No, I'm five foot seven. Maybe five foot six and a half now. But I'm identifying as five foot 10.

So I'll ask you again, how tall am I?

Ruth: You're five foot 10.

Rob: Thank you. We're too old for all this, aren't we?

Ruth: Oh, I don't understand it. Anyway, you can't even talk about not understanding anything, can you? You just have to go, I'm old.

I can't hear very well now. So just leave me out of the conversation. Thank you.”

That sounds dreadful. I also recall "poetess" and "authoress". Smacked of the gutsy little women trying to do manly things like write books, bless their hearts.
I don't feel sad that we have largely lost some of these terms. I take Ruth's point about "actress" but i think that for some women it had a lesser, slightly pejorative undertone as in "she's a model/actress" which when spoken aloud came over as 'she's a model slash actress.' Not so nice.

Perhaps but I always saw it more as women blaming a system that benefits men. But I'm probably the wrong person to debate feminism or the patriarchy with.

Evidence doesn't really back up your belief that the "system" unfairly benefits men when in fact it benefits a tiny proportion of ultra wealthy / successful men whilst doing the complete opposite to the vast majority.

Like I said, I'm not the person to debate feminism or the patriarchy with. I only joined the thread to dispute your statement about most men being tired of being blamed by women.

I’m just resurrecting this thread I originally started to add more evidence to the “Rob Brydon is GC” pile, and also to gently mock someone who has been holier than thou towards GC women (Dara O’Brien). Listening to a repeat of an interview from earlier this year, they start talking briefly about Eddie Izzard and repeatedly “misgender” him! Rob even drops in a sarcastic (to my ears) “she” and then Dara goes on calling Eddie “him/he” 🤣🤣🤣

Rob: And then you don't tour France at all. Nobody tours France, which is interesting.
I'd probably take great pride in that. There is Eddie.

Dara: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Rob: But he's an anomaly.

Dara: Hilariously, I remember talking to somebody who...

Rob: She's an anomaly.

Dara: Excuse me. Yeah, but I remember talking to somebody who produced Eddie's gig there and said that the crowd were a lot less charmed by Eddie's French than Eddie was. And we're all expats who'd come out to have, oh, great, a night in English.

Rob: This would be so good.

Dara: And he comes out, bonjour! Bonjour, just me and Traversee. And he does the whole thing and they're like, oh, no, Jesus, I can't believe it. So he's made a huge strength of it, but I think these gigs that were run by Gacchall, who brought us over to Carlebyre, who brought us all over to do gigs in Paris, and still does.”

Dara O'Briain has been a massive cowardly disappointment IMO. Up there with Ben Goldacre.

Is this him subtly reverse ferreting, or just blithely showing that whatever he actually says, he knows bloody well what the truth is?
