Seems to be a bit of a technicality here if you read closely, but good that World Aquatics were prepared to argue their case about the effects of male puberty on male athletes who wish to compete in the female category.

“However, in a 24-page decision, the court (of arbitration of sport) concluded that Thomas was “simply not entitled to engage with eligibility to compete in WA competitions” as someone who was no longer a member of US swimming.”

As I understand it, Lia is not a member of US Swimming so Lia can’t take place in World Aquatics events, so can’t qualify for the Olympics.

“World Aquatics insists it is doing all it can be inclusive and has introduced an “open” category for transgender swimmers. However, plans to debut it at the Berlin World Cup last October were cancelled after no entries were received for any of the 50m and 100m races across all strokes, which were due to take place alongside male and female races.”

in order to get legal standing, Lia would have had to swim and qualify as a male in the US Olympic trials this weekend, then go on to challenge the World Aquatics ruling that Lia cannot compete in Women categories.

He'd never have qualified in the Men's races!

Thomas isn't going to the Olympics because Thomas isn't an Olympic standard athlete. What Thomas needs is for a village swimming gala to identify as the Olympics then he might make the standard.

Female swimming is for female swimmers and unfortunately Lia is male. He should try out for the male team if he wishes to compete at the Olympics.

Brilliant news. I’m only sad for the young women who lost places in the past due to the decision to let a middling male swimmer cheat. Not to mention the indecent exposure and voyeurism in the locker room. How was that ever allowed??

I've a tendency to develop cramp when swimming but I'm game as long as the lifeguards are in attendance and paying attention.
