This is quite different to the appearance of most other ads. In the OP’s screen grab, the mumsnet logo almost looks like it’s on Starmer’s shirt.

I don’t think it’s like any other paid ad. It’s right at the top with red down the sides. The amount of red makes the ad surround everything.

I don’t think MNHQ is politically neutral. I don’t really care. It’s a free site, unless you are silly enough to pay for premium.

Well spotted - now you've said it I cant unsee it.

Lucky that Starmer doesn't have the usual suspects that we have on FWR, because if he did he would be being accused of supporting the nest of vipers by the mere fact the logo is next door to him!

Maybe somebody on twitter could start spreading the rumour with a carefully clipped version to promote a non fact as fact.

Question I wonder is, how the hell do people browse the Internet with ads? It's annoying.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/06/2024 01:30

I think it's cheaper to endlessly spam all the boards about VAT on private schools meaning we will tax air, echoes and rain soon. That's free if enough idiots are having to do it voluntarily.

I'd rather the banner and I can't stand the whole boiling of them.

It’s a pretty standard display ad.

SheilaFentiman · 11/06/2024 07:08

i am on my phone so hadn’t see the whole thing - but the backdrop is similar to a pampers ad that’s been run before, for example.

If the ad annoys you enough to change your vote, that’s your prerogative. I use money supermarket rather than go compare, based on less annoying ads.

The next 5 years of politics seem a leeetle more important than my car insurance, but it’s a free country.

anyolddinosaur · 11/06/2024 07:33

Funnily enough I didnt see it on this board, only when I looked at another thread.

It is rather off putting as a sea of red - but if you arent put off by Labour's misogynist support for the men's rights movement or the relentless posters trying to dictate who you vote for then an add is not going to change that, is it.

Presumably anyone can book an add as long as they pay for it but whoever booked the ads might want to rethink their strategy.

RedToothBrush · 11/06/2024 07:42

Your click history will also affect what adverts are targeted at you. Other people may not see the same adverts as you. Advertiser's collect data about you from your cookies. Consider your advertising privacy settings.

singingintherainrainrain · 11/06/2024 08:49

It's an ad. Maybe delete your cookie history on your browser?

BezMills · 11/06/2024 08:55

The enormous screen covering top and sides triple banner won't have come cheap!
For sure mn users are a good place to deploy advertising funds.
So, fair enough in my book. I hope to see other parties do the same... indeed I'd expect it

GlomOfNit · 11/06/2024 16:54

Goodness, it's just an advert! They keep MN running. Ads are on ALL our social media. I'd like to think I don't really notice them (ahem just clicked on a FB ad for Joanie dress) so why would MN be any different?

if you feel it invades your safe space on this particular board - that does sound a teeny bit like the toddler TRAs who are constantly wailing about deplatforming various people because they feel unsafe.

BezMills · 11/06/2024 17:32

I think it's fair to have an opinion on this, given labour's poor record on FWR recently.
FWR is not a safe space at all, in terms of being able to avoid counterpoint. Rather the opposite, I'd say.

Unlike the treddits, terfblocked xitter, and various other 'safe spaces' ringfenced by whitelists and instabans, hostile posters are free to come here and repeatedly make the same facile points which have already been handily debunked dozens of times. We have MRA, TRA, Labour Activists, and so many more.

I welcome any indication that labour would not instantly dismiss our concerns about single sex spaces, female sport and dignity in medical settings.

I'll enjoy it, if I ever see an advert for that. I'll donate £50 if I do

First of all I am entitled to explain what I felt.

If you didn't experience that fine.

But because you didn't experience it means that I am a toddler.

What is fascinating is how many want to say I cant really have had the response I did.

And want to come on this thread and telll me this, whereas you would think if to them it was just an ad it wasn't worth the time responding to.

I have been on and for many years before that been a reader of FWR.

I have no memory of any ad that so envoloped the surroundings.

And in terms of quality control, would have thought MNHQ would have guidelines in terms of how an ad makes their page look.

Yes I agree with that - but the envoloping ad gives an impression of who is hosting, not that the usual time wasters come here.

Yes! We could start a gardening project and let Labour know we will pay for their ads on mumsnet if they would committ to support women's sex based rights!

Just being a bit nerdy, but have as suggested by post up thread and so sign of the red swamp, but I may own MNHQ an apology.

Is seems the ads at the top are via google! ie if you click on the x in the top right hand corner the ad disappears as it says adds via google, and options to comment. The ad is also repeated in a small box in the right hand column.

But as the red swamp has not come back not sure if it was via google or different as none of the ones via google are able to take over the background of the whole page.

Sort of pointless info but if anyone is interested

It's the fact of its taking over so much of the screen which I find unpleasant. Usually MN's background is a soft pale grey/blue which is restful & ignorable, & adverts appear in boxes on that background. A bright red background is very 'in your face' & it's not something I'd choose or design: can you think of any websites which use that much solid red as a background? That's my objection. If Labour want to advertise, who cares? Just keep it to the usual advert boxes.

RayonSunrise · 12/06/2024 07:12

If you don't like the "takeover" ad format, you could write to MNHQ and ask them not to sell it. I've been disliking that format for over 10 years, maybe one day organisations will stop making money from it!

borntobequiet · 12/06/2024 07:24

It’s a commercial site so hardly surprising. Labour knows it needs to boost support among women so it’s an astute choice. I imagine the team who made it don’t know much about these boards or the specific issues discussed on here.
Labour’s adverts don’t annoy me half as much as the MaxMara ones with the gormless looking, weirdly distorted models wearing horrible, ill-fitting clothes.

BezMills · 12/06/2024 10:07

As someone who cannot find an NHS dentist for their child, the Labour promise to sort out dentistry is music to my ears. I took a look at their uncosted plan. Make dentists do out of hours emergency care in greater amount. I have no doubt that this is needed, and useful (though good luck finding the dentist hours for that).
What I need for my child, is a 100% commitment that every child will have access to an NHS dentist for routine care.

Labour's Child Health Action Plan will create the healthiest generation of children ever – The Labour Party

"Labour will eliminate dental deserts and improve children’s oral healthy by:

  • Delivering 700,000 extra urgent dental appointments per year, so more children can see a dentist when they really need to.
  • Introducing a targeted national supervised toothbrushing programme for 3-5-year-olds in our fully funded breakfast clubs."

I posted up thread that the ads displayed come via Google and you can click on the X in the top right hand corner of the ad, and send a comment to say your dont like it, but .......

Having now been presented by the red swamp again when logging in today, and in fact it seems this ad is not via google. Or if it does, does not have the option to say you want to dismiss the ad and not see it again.

Stranger and stranger ...

I think I am being trolled for daring to speak out against the Red Swamp.

I seem to get it all the time now, and as said before, no option which other ads provide to dismiss it.

Luckily, although I will miss everyone on FWR, I dont have much time today to be a keyboard participant.

Just hope tomorrow they will have moved on to harrass someone else.

The hilarious thing is, the way the algorithms work, the more you comment on this thread. The more likely you are to be served that ad.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 14/06/2024 16:50

I've just experienced this advert as well - truly awful. I am a classic floating voter, but this ad is intrusive and in no way makes we feel more inclined to vote for them. Its all aspiration and no detail. I was minded to just spoil my vote anyway, for the first time ever, as there is no-one who's plans resonate with what matters to me...this isn't persuading me to reconsider. Not that it would make any difference anyway - I suspect we will end up Lib Dem where I am!!
