Labour Banner surrounding the whole of MN

Just really uncomfortable with this. Feel like MN should be politically neutral - and the placement of the ad - all the way around the MN interfact - makes it look like Labour is practically sponsoring MN. It's been like this for a couple of days now.

I can't imagine you'd do this for any other political party?

And for the record - I'm a Labour voter.

I use the app so not seen this, but I think this is appalling.

BlueGrackle · 12/06/2024 17:19

I’ve not see this ad ?

loudbatperson · 12/06/2024 17:19

To be fair its the same placement as many other ads that have run. It's a space that can rented, it doesn't mean it's any sort of endorsement from Mumsnet, just like the recent pampers advertising, that was in the same wraparound style, doesn't mean the site supports pampers.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 12/06/2024 17:22

TBH - its MN's site, their choice.
MNHQ may favor Labour but they do allow postings from all political persuasions and that in my books is a massive credit to MN

I say the banner yesterday and thought, WTH - but on refresh it had disappeared, just Starmer will after the GE

ItsFuckingBoringFeedingEveryoneUntilYouDie · 12/06/2024 17:25

Surely if the Tories, or any other party, wanted to pay for this, they could do so too? If they weren't smart enough to do that, well done to Labour for getting there first.

FattypuffToThinnifer · 12/06/2024 17:26

I would love this 🥰 (but am not seeing it)

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 12/06/2024 17:27

It's paid for advertising.

Any political party can do the same if they pay up.

Papyrophile · 12/06/2024 17:34

My ad blocker works!

IwantToRetire · 12/06/2024 17:54

I was going to start a thread on this because it is really strange and out of keeping with other ad placements.

Most of these are at the head of the web page, and sometimes repeated in a box on the right panel.

And as they come via google there is the option by using the X in the top right hand corner of the ad to dismiss it or tell google you dont want to see it again.

However, it seems there is no option on the Labour ad ie implying it has not come via some rotating number of ads via google.

And as OP has pointed out, this ad isn't just at the top (where most ads are discreet and within the widths of the column) but surrounds the mumsnet content in a very intrusive way. Now known as the Red Swamp.

Is this in fact not an ad for Labour, but a statement by MNHQ as it is not presented, nor has the options to interact with as other ads have?

Could MNHQ clarify?

(A thread about this was started on FWR a couple of days ago https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5093904-why-does-mumsnet-have-a-huge-ad-for-the-labour-party?reply=135921009 )

Nothing to stop the Tories paying for an ad if they want one.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 12/06/2024 17:56

I’m just getting loreal ads etc.

RoseUnder · 12/06/2024 17:58

It's fine with me! It was a useful summary of their policies. Good for Labour HQ for booking the ad space before the Tories did - UNLESS the Tories don't see Mumsnet as a key market/outlet for them to run ads on.

I'm sure they've all done their homework on this, and both parties have sophisticated ad-buying machinery so not short of opportunities.

HousedInMySoul · 12/06/2024 17:59

I thought Justine was mates with David Cameron? Had always assumed, perhaps wrongly, that the owner of mumsnet was a tory because of that.

RoseUnder · 12/06/2024 18:02

I wonder what data Mumsnet HQ shares about website users with political advertisers to help them decide on buying ads (and how much they're prepared to pay for them). How much does a political party get to know about the audience they're reaching by advertising here, before coughing up the £££££ for the ads.

Curious as detailed data about Mumsnet users would be super interesting. Eg age, location, family details (easy to scrape from profiles) and political leanings (easy for a gen-AI tool to scrape). I don't know what's allowed under the new regulation, but would be interested in how it all works.

SlightlyJaded · 12/06/2024 18:26

I obviously meant 'interface' in my OP

I get that anyone can pay for space.
I will be voting Labour
I still think MN should be politically neutral.

The minute it feels in any way affiliated or endorsed by (or for) a party, any poster of ANY other political leaning, is at risk of feeling like an outsider. I think it's wrong.

CelesteCunningham · 12/06/2024 18:47

I haven't seen that ad, but I've seen other (very annoying) ads taking up that much space. Tbh, I refresh until they're gone.

Just use an ad blocker? Confused

I have pointed out it isn't on the page in the same way as a google ad.

And anyway totally misses the point of why some are questioning it.

hattie43 · 12/06/2024 22:04

MN is a left wing echo chamber

Reugny · 12/06/2024 22:06

I don't get a Labour banner.

And I use MN in more than one political constituency.

If they didn’t allow postings from all political persuasions that would mean we were in China.
I guess all forums accept ads from what they see as a credible source.

AquaFurball · 12/06/2024 22:09

It's just an ad. Most of the ads I see completely irrelevant to me, would be more offended seeing Tory ads but they'd have just as much right to advertise here as anyone else. Nothing is politically neutral anymore, and a free platform has no obligation to be 🤷

Maybe the Tories will book it next week 😁

IwantToRetire · 12/06/2024 22:12

Just to repeat the point that no one is registering.

Not just the size makes it different to other ads but also, unlike the ads rotated by google, you cannot dismiss this ad, which you can do with google tell them why you dont want to see it.

It would be the same point if it were from any of the other party (even the Party of Women!).

Because the format is not that of google ads you cant give feed back, and you cant close it.
