I can't remember the last time I actually saw Thangnam in person though - think it was just before the last election, she's not particularly visible

I saw her last week canvassing on Cotham Hill when I came out of work, she was with what looked like a bunch of students

JazbayGrapes · 12/06/2024 16:06

Too bad we live in Bristol South.

PainOngoing · 12/06/2024 17:39

I've used KJK standing in Bristol Central as leverage to send (another!) e-mail to try and coax Thangam out of the GC closet. I hope she comes out as I would be delighted to vote for her, but so far I've found her silence immensely disappointing.

No reply from Thangam on my e-mails thus far.

I was going to spoil my vote, but I'm planning on voting KJK now (unless Thangam comes out of the closet!).

Sausagenbacon · 12/06/2024 18:16

Thangham has resolutely avoided talking about this issue - pretty difficult when you're Shadow Minister for Sport. She's not going to start now.
And, if she did, we might not like what she says. For all we know she's a full-on TWAW.

OP posts:
NonCrimeHakeIncident · 12/06/2024 18:22

LOJ ambushed her while she was out canvassing and she absolutely refused to let him steamroll her into an interview when she was busy. So points to her for that. Other than that I don’t know her position.

AdultHumanFemale · 18/06/2024 18:49

A swift Google brings me no closer to finding her campaign or much information about her standing in Bristol, mainly old news items. I'm not sure how I'm missing it.
Any ideas how I can connect with the campaign locally, if there is one?

IwantToRetire · 18/06/2024 18:54

Most of the info is on the other thread about all candidates https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5092728-party-of-women-has-16-candidates-standing-for-election-on-4-july-2024?page=4

But if you look at the PoW web site it tells you how to contact candidates and offer to volunteer https://www.partyofwomen.org/can-you-help

For all we know she's a full-on TWAW.

Thangam is definitely not TWAW. I've spoken to her about this issue and she is very careful about what she says but I get the impression she is quietly GC. I completely understand why she wouldn't be more vocal about this given the make up of Bristol Central. We desperately need more women like her to push the sensible rational line at senior levels of government.

If KJK takes votes from Labour and she loses her seat to the Greens then it's a total own goal.

This!

Sausagenbacon · 18/06/2024 19:18

FWIW, I think voters for POW will just be grateful to have someone to vote for. That's my position, anyway.
And I'm afraid 'quietly GC' just doesn't do it for me. What exactly has that achieved? Nothing. It really hasn't.
What would make me think that it would be of any use when they are in with a stonking majority?

OP posts:
Sausagenbacon · 18/06/2024 19:20

Actually, it's achieved one thing - she's still holding her seat. But that's all. And it's not enough.

OP posts:
Sausagenbacon · 18/06/2024 19:23

But, if it sets your mind at rest, my DH has been doing a lot of canvassing for Thangham and the subject has never come up (Gaza is a big issue). So too niche to worry about.
He's much more concerned about the popularity of Carla Denyer.

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 18/06/2024 19:26

Surely the point is to raise concerns about the Greens who are said to have a chance of winning.

And it is their party leader.

KJK it might help the Labour candidate be a a bit more bold!

Turboislander · 18/06/2024 21:15

This is my constituency and there are a fair few Vote Green signs popping up near me (have seen a few Labour ones but not as many). Really not a fan of Carla. Hope KJK doesn't take votes from Thangham (agree with others that she is probably quietly GC). Some polls have suggested we will go Green but the latest one by Survation suggests a Labour win so fingers crossed. Boundary changes since the last GE will lose us some Labour votes, I think.

Turboislander · 18/06/2024 21:16

Been waiting a long time to see the Tories kicked out and loosing Thangham would really take the shine off it!

AdultHumanFemale · 18/06/2024 23:23

Gorgeous username, Turbo.

Thank you, IWantToRetire.

CharlotteLightandDark · 19/06/2024 09:32

Yeah most people i know seem to be voting green for their stance on Palestine/Israel conflict.
I think I’ll be voting for Thangham again.

Never been sure about KJK, also I agree with a lot of what she says about women’s rights she seems like a bit of a Katie Hopkins type.

Sloejelly · 19/06/2024 09:37

KJK is an outspoken woman who does not let niceties soften her message. People are always uncomfortable around such women as they are truely gender-nonconforming.

Or maybe she's just more like a northern woman even though she's a southerner.

In some northern working-class contexts femininity is associated with strength and aggression.

Why too bad? This is what the Bristol South MP/ labour candidate had to say on Twitter about the CASSreport.

As an NHS manager, Board Member and MP I’ve written, consulted on, been briefed about and read numerous NHS reports. This a such a thorough and well written piece of work and taken me all day to read. Telling us so much and telling us how much we didn’t and don’t know.

Sounds like someone who supports a calm evidence based approach to the issue, which is what is needed. People like kjk stirring up hate are likely to do more harm than good I think.

here we go again. Yes, because telling the truth, something that most Labour MPs are signally unable to do, is a Bad Thing.

I got a reply from Thangam Debbonaire to my e-mail:

"Thanks for your email.

I really appreciate you contacting me about this issue, and I'm sorry that you feel I haven't been vocal enough on it. Particularly because the rights and safety of women and girls is so important to me. I hope I'm able to reassure you now.

You mention single-sex spaces, the participation of transwomen in women's sport, and gender self-identification, so I will lay out my position on those issues now, and if there is anything else then please don't hesitate to follow up.

Firstly, as you may know, before I was an MP I spent decades working in the Violence Against Women and Girls sector. I know personally the importance of single sex spaces and services, and I am a fierce defender of them. I'm proud of Labour’s 2010 Equality Act, which enshrined single-sex spaces along with other rights and exemptions for women. I want to absolutely assure you of my and the Labour Party’s commitment to the 2010 Equality Act and its single-sex exemptions.

Secondly, as well as having been your MP I am also the Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and in this capacity I have taken a particular interest in women’s sport. I want every girl to have the opportunities that I wasn’t fortunate enough to have as a child – access to brilliant, competitive and exciting sport. We have to ensure that sport is inclusive, and we have to balance this with considerations around safety and competitiveness. As Keir Starmer said in April, it is up to sporting bodies to take a decision whether to permit transgender athletes to participate. Some have already decided not to allow transwomen to compete in women’s sport, and we support their right to do so and the decisions they have made.

Thirdly, regarding gender recognition, Labour will modernise, simplify, and reform the current gender recognition process. This new process will retain the need for a diagnosis of gender dysphoria from a specialist doctor and is not gender self-identification. We are making this change because the current process is intrusive and outdated and does not give trans people the recognition and acceptance that they deserve. I hope you will agree that this approach strikes the appropriate balance.

I really hope that has helped clarify my views.

And these are not just my views, they are also the official policies of the Labour Party. Labour has always been the party of equality and the party responsible for advancing equality for women, whether that is the 2010 Equality Act, the 1970 Equal Pay Act or the 1975 Sex Discrimination Act, to name just a few. In our manifesto, published yesterday and which you can read here, we pledged to halve violence against women and girls within a decade, and we were explicit that women's equality sits at the heart of our missions for the UK.

I hope this reassures you that a vote for me, as your Labour candidate, is a vote for someone who will stand up for women's rights and women's equality, and it is a vote for a party that will put women's equality at the heart of everything it does.

As I said before, I really appreciate you contacting me about this issue and giving me a chance to set out my views directly to you. Representing the people of Bristol is my first priority, and no matter what I will always listen and be a voice for Bristol Central in Parliament and, if Labour win the election, at the heart of government.

Please don't hesitate to get back in touch if you have anything else you'd like to ask me."

I'm still thinking of what to say in my reply!

What a load of tripe.

How exactly is the current process for obtaining a GRC intrusive and outdated? Answer, it's not, it's just something politicians say to excuse throwing women's rights and child safeguarding under the bus.

Is it more intrusive than a 12 year old girl seeing a ladydick in her leisure centre 'women's' changing rooms because no-one dare ensure they're really single sex. Or the child victim of Dolatowski being attacked in the women's toilets?

Fucks sake.

I'd push back on the Equality Act and what 'sex' means. It is clear it includes men with a GRC. If it didn't, the further exception to exclude them wouldn't be necessary. I'd say a simple fix would be to amend the Act to be clear sex is biological sex, and ask her if she supported that, and if not why not. If the Labour Party is going to keep banging on about the Equality Act, then let's see them justify why sex shouldn't mean biological sex

NoWordForFluffy · 19/06/2024 11:39

My wannabe Labour MP stuck to the 'legally illiterate' (TM Sonia Sodha) party line that the EA didn't need amendment when I sent the Sex Matters questions.

I referred him to the Michael Foran explanation on TwiX in my response but got no further reply.
