They have a 'women only' group support option for survivors- but don't tell female rape victims it's actually mixed sex, as they pretend TWAW.

This is so underhand and dishonest. If they believe this why dont they just say.

I have seen other groups saying they are trans inclusive.

Also a worry that for instance (and not blaming them) Rape Crisis (E&W) have a directory of support groups, but rely on the groups themselves describing what they offer.

And if, basically they are lying, by the time someone needing support will have had to go through a traumatic event to find this out.

And wonder if the spread of FWR is wide enough that we could compile an HONEST listing of support services.

How can anyone whose actual job is to provide support think they can treat those needing support in this way?

Sausagenbacon · 19/06/2024 18:31

IMO a problem is Bristol Council (Labour controlled until recently).
Their policy is not to deal with groups that do not recognise TWAW (not that Thangham couldn't have spoken up about it, but she was too busy taking the softly-softly approach).
I remember a recent 'consultation' from the Council, costing god knows how much, about access to services by TW. The result was massively pro-GC, but the Council ignored the result.
In Bristol we have the Marvin effect. Marvin Rees was elected as mayor, heavily promoted by the local Labour Party. Of course, it bit them on the bum as
A) once he got into power, he wasn't interested in the local party.
B) he was useless. So useless that Bristol has voted to remove the post of mayor.
So now the Greens are in control, but haven't been in control long enough to f**k it up.
So I sometimes wonder if Thangham is fighting people's general disaffection with Labour at a local level.

And clearly, an issue not just in Bristol, but with many other councils up and down the country. There's surely a parallel here with this Title IX stuff brought in by Biden in the US (mentioned on the General conversations thread in this folder).

IwantToRetire · 19/06/2024 19:04

but the Council ignored the result.

Well that seems to be a pattern of Labour councils.

In may very Labour borough we are always being "consulted" and then they just do what they want anyway.

Although most of the time they seem to work with undemocratically constituted "representative" groups who just rubber stamp what ever the council says it wants to do.

And when Labour gets a huge majority in the HoC they wont need to consult with anyone, they can just vote in what they want.

Firstly, as you may know, before I was an MP I spent decades working in the Violence Against Women and Girls sector. I know personally the importance of single sex spaces and services, and I am a fierce defender of them. I'm proud of Labour’s 2010 Equality Act, which enshrined single-sex spaces along with other rights and exemptions for women. I want to absolutely assure you of my and the Labour Party’s commitment to the 2010 Equality Act and its single-sex exemptions.

^ this was a great start to the letter, sad that she descended into repeating the bafflingly incoherent party line for the rest of it

Indeed, I've already drafted some of my reply and said I was heartened by her stance on single-sex spaces. Currently wondering what level of disappointment to convey in the rest of my e-mail (on a scale of single raised eyebrow to headbutting the wall).

@PainOngoing
Would be great if she would tell you what action she and Labour will take to sort this out. As the answer appears to be zilch- they caused it. The exclusion of female victims of male abuse from support in Bristol if they can't pretend men are women has only been raised in Parliament / the Lords by an independent (Baroness Fox- who I don't know much about?) not by Labour - it's in Hansard https://hansard.parliament.uk/Lords/2024-04-16/debates/5047DA2C-E4B3-422A-B9B9-114A936DF1DA/VictimsAndPrisonersBill#contribution-213A8158-8799-42A4-912F-A042C1076E82

Thanks, I'll take a look!

Is KJK actually planning to do anything in Bristol? She doesn't appear to be canvassing or anything. I am still unsure why she picked that constituency but she's not going get votes if she does nothing there

I (personally) think she picked the constituency as it's the one of the most captured places in the UK outside of Brighton, and because Thangam D is there, who seems to be a closeted "GC feminist". I think she's goading TD to come out as GC.

As for not doing anything, she was banned from the hustings wasn't she?

And I genuinely don't think she'd be safe walking the streets, especially after seeing people lobbing stuff at Farage. I don't support Farage AT ALL, but I do believe in his right to campaign without fear of something being thrown at his head!

Turboislander · 20/06/2024 11:28

The Beacon are doing a hustings and say that they have invited all candidates (sold out though now unfortunately). Bristol Central Hustings with Bristol 24/7 | Bristol Beacon I haven't seen any campaigning from KJK. Seems a bit of a waste standing if she's not going to do anything. I wonder if she knows about Jude English (local Green councillor and lesbian who was kicked out of the Greens for saying biological sex is real).

It sounds like she does according to this article:

https://www.bristol247.com/news-and-features/news/kellie-jay-keen-candidate-bristol-central/

"Speaking in a live video on Friday, Keen mentioned how former Bristol Green councillor Jude English had been suspended and “treated abysmally apparently because she doesn’t think women have penises”."

Kellie-Jay Keen is candidate in Bristol Central

Keen, also known as Posie Parker, founded the Let Women Speak movement and will be standing for the Party of Women

It's terrifying that misogyny is so rife in Bristol Labour MPs are too scared to speak up for vulnerable women and single sex spaces ( in case they get the Rosie Duffield treatment?), and Green MPs are kicked out of their party altogether...
How long can this level of ideological contempt for women and reality go on for? It scares me.
Any woman speaking up is brave, whatever party she belongs to, and I thank the women who do. Wish the men would too.

I don't think that's quite right. She wasn't invited to one cross Bristol hustings, where only the 4 biggest parties got represented.

Hold the press - famous man has spoken. It really annoys me that they think voters are so easily impressed 🙄.

Just saw on her twitter KJK is claiming they tried to keep her out of the hustings when the security guard is very clear it's her camera that's the problem not her 🙄
I'm assuming she found it tedious as that was the only update

Odd that he is getting involved (isn't he normally a Lib Dem supporter?). We already have an MP who is a politician with integrity. Carla D comes across as a camera loving opportunist and the Greens have put out several lies about Labour in their local campaign materials. Integrity my arse.

A man who solicits prostitutes turns out to be a misogynist, colour me surprised.

She's also endorsed by Little OJ on the back of the leaflet...

Hustings can be watched on youtube if anyone is interested. It's long. All six candidates were there.

Thanks for this link. Its been hard to find.

Is there anyone from Bristol who can explain why this hustings attracted all candidates.

Is like a news service for Bristol it seems to be called Britsol 24/7.

Just asking given the info I shared from facebook about how both the Labour party and Green party candidates didn't seem it worthwhile to turn out for community groups.

AlvinStardustsGloves · 02/07/2024 00:31

The host explained at the start.
For a hustings that is open to the public, all candidates must be invited.
