It wasn't a derail. Immediately people wondered what Labour would say. But all we've had when trying to discuss the Tories' policy idea is "what about funding". That's a derail, no?

yep. It is a squirrel.

Datun · 03/06/2024 13:33

What's the point of removing the privacy clause when the birth certificate does the job?

You say let me see your GRC, he says I don't have one, because I'm not trans, I'm a woman, and here's my birth certificate to prove it.

If a man shows you a birth certificate that says he's a woman what actually can one do?

That is not fireplaces point at all. Her point is KB can say what she likes, there isn't enough money to provide single sex spaces ie hospital wards. Talk is cheap.

CassieMaddox · 03/06/2024 13:29

This is a thread about the Conservatives. Nice try to derail to Labour but the fact is the two parties are essentially the same in policy terms.

Didn’t you link to Labour policy in pp

Why do you say pp is ‘derailing’

And I want to read what @ResisterRex has to say thanks

ResisterRex · 03/06/2024 13:35

Essentially I agree with others that this shifts the Overton window. And we do need to shift it to Repeal. Someone said upthread that is probably another electoral term away and I think that seems about right. Tbh if Labour win and they do take us down the Canada route, it could easily end up making the case for Repeal. Probably why they've panicked and said no change is needed.

It is a squirrel! "Oh no, Kemi has done a kamikaze interview! QUICK - what about Labour? See that GP Gender Self ID squirrel? LOOK AT THAT INSTEAD!!!!"

This is to ensure that trans women – those who were born male – can be legally barred from places such as women’s prisons and sessions for domestic abuse victims, even if they have a gender recognition certificate.

This law already exists. They are not promising to bring in anything new.

It needs to be made mandatory, not at the discretion of the service provider.

Absolutely this

EasternStandard · 03/06/2024 13:37

CassieMaddox · 03/06/2024 13:32

Gosh. You seem to know my position better than I do!

I think GRCs to define someone's status are better than self-ID. But I actually would prefer single sex spaces where needed for safety/dignity, protected by the EA. "Gender" as protected characteristic in other settings e.g. social.

However some would prefer a centrally maintained list. And some would prefer no recognition of trans identities at all.

As I'm not in power it's kinda irrelevant.

What?

You got the first line right, that isn’t clear at all

So do you want GRCs or scrap the GRA? You can’t do both

Datun · 03/06/2024 13:37

What about a GRC that doesn't change your birth certificate?

Although, then, what's the bloody point?

Datun · 03/06/2024 13:39

I remember when discussing the GRA was considered extreme among the feminists who were campaigning.

Same. And suggesting repeal was taboo. Even amongst what we know call gender critical women.

That's the power of the trans lobby and their no debate bollocks.

ResisterRex · 03/06/2024 13:39

Funding is another squirrel. The public sector was awash with cash yet we still had Rotherham for example. Fact is if you want something to happen, it'll happen. This isn't HS2, it's clarifying the law and telling some people NO.

You can say NO for free and write a policy for free. Shock news - it doesn't necessitate outsourcing to a captured "charity"!

yep.

The practicalities are simply not robust enough to withstand reality. A GRC was brought in for legal purposes and it has been expanded, even if just informally, from that intention.

"Safe spaces for biological women only" is pretty unequivocal. People who don't want to believe them nit pick the precise words, but this is pretty clear.

You are putting a lot of trust in Starmer to support women’s rights in government when he’s been so determined not to in opposition.
I strongly disagree with this. His is the only party coming up with women-focussed policies like these:

https://www.emilythornberry.com/shadow-attorney-general/2023/10/10/making-the-law-work-for-women-my-labour-conference-speech-2023/

I'm looking forward to seeing their manifesto.

Precision is important when it comes to law. Precison and discrimination. Without them you end up with badly made law which will require further clarification - which is where we're now at.

We need lots more precise detail from Starmer, not wishy washy words about "safe spaces". He's supposed to be a lawyer, you'd think he'd understand this.

True. I missed that bit. That needs to stop first and for as long as we have to have GRCs it needs to be that one certificate or nothing. People struggle to understand this mess precisely because it is a mess re documentation.

No. Actually they are all part of the discussion of the EA.

Can you explain to us how discussing labour's views and their statements on the EA and GRA is not directly appropriate to the Tory manifesto?

Because I think you think you have a great gotcha, when the reality is that you don't.

I do think it will take more time than many women need, but I suspect that it will take that time.

It feels strange though to have posters who don't seem to want politicians to be having this discussion.

Is it?

What is the point in legislating for single sex spaces if there isn't the money to provide them?

NHS breaks mixed-sex wards rules 44,000 times in a year with patients put at risk

Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting said patients were left feeling humiliated and at risk, adding: ‘The use of mixed sex wards has gone through the roof under the Tories’

What do you want from Kemi? Did you watch her GMB interview? Neither clear, nor precise.

I think its the best thing I've watched all year to be honest.

It is another thread that feels disconnected to be honest Rex. So, no worries. It is good though that it is fast moving with plenty of discussion.

bloody hell Cassie. You can't be this blinded, surely.

Even if you hate the Tories, wouldn't you want them to come up with something brilliant, in order to help women?
